He and his group of mostly male disciples, prompted by the horrors of World War I, searched for fresh formulas for depicting the bizarre and inhumane events of the era and for reviving the arts in Europe, notably by experimenting with innovative practices which included probing the unconscious mind. Women, if they had a role, were viewed as muses or performed only ancillary responsibilities in the movement. Their participation was usually in the graphic arts rather than in literature. However, in later generations, francophone women writers such as Joyce Mansour and Suzanne Césaire began to develop Surrealist strategies for enacting their own subjectivity and promoting their political agendas. Aside from casual mention, no critic has formally investigated the surreal practices of this sizeable company of francophone women authors. I examine the literary production of seven women from three geographic regions in order to document the enduring capacity of surrealist practice to express human experience in the postcolonial and postmodern era. From the Maghreb I analyze La Grotte éclatée by Yamina Mechakra and L'amour, la fantasia by Assia Djebar, and from Lebanon, L'Excisée by Evelyne Accad.

												  Conscience and Consciousness in French and Francophone Literature (20Th-21St Century)Conscience and Consciousness in French and Francophone Literature (20th-21st Century) M.St. Special Subject Hilary Term 2021 This special subject examines the manifestations and literary figuration of human interiority in French and Francophone literature, from the early twentieth century until today. Without aiming for exhaustiveness, we will focus on the ways in which the conscience and consciousness of writers and/or their characters have engaged with 20th- and 21st-century realities and experiences at critical socio-historical junctures. The representation of the rational, moral, emotional, partisan, or metaphysical responses of contemporary subjects to events big and small, personal or/or political, will be our object of study, spanning perception, sensation, introspection, resistance, engagement, trauma, and critical judgment, among other modes of awareness. We will consider a wide array of genres and forms that shed light on this active inner life and its relation to an outside world shaped by major upheavals (such as the world wars, colonization and decolonization) but also by norms, customs, ideologies, and fields such as science, religion, and philosophy: the novel, automatic writing, epistolary fiction, poetry, testimonies, essays, the polyphonic novel, the nouveau roman and/or autobiography. Students will meet for four sessions of two hours each. The reading list indicates a small number of ‘set’ texts to read for each of sessions, as well as recommended secondary sources. Students are advised to have made a good start on the primary reading before term begins. Each student will give a short presentation on one of the set texts (10 to 15 minutes per student, in one session each, to be agreed by email ahead of Week 1).

Abstract My research bridges the gap between Anglophone postcolonial studies and Francophone literary studies by looking at Francophone literature from West and Equatorial Africa, which remains under-studied in France. This work answers key questions: how can this literature be interpreted beyond its current confines? How does it rethink local and global identities? What theoretical configurations can be applied to these writers to bring them into greater academic and public prominence? I propose a comprehensive analysis of this literature’s significance in the world through a comparative reading of five contemporary regional novels in their political, social and historical context. This multidirectional reading allows me to evoke what Dominic Thomas calls an ‘intercultural dynamics’ in which colonialism ‘finds itself relocated as a mechanism that proceeds from globalization’, and integrates various spatial zones in which thinking is produced.

Problematic Returns: On the Romanesque in Contemporary French Literature Abstract This dissertation examines the discourse that emerged in the late 1980s positing a “retour du romanesque” in French literature. Through a survey of the scholarly work on the subject of contemporary literature and the romanesque, as well as a close analysis of three major authors associated with the “retour du romanesque”--Jean Echenoz, Jean Rouaud, and Antoine Volodine--this dissertation aims to provide a fuller account of the modalities, stakes and goals of the contemporary novel. In particular, it seeks to address the question of how the contemporary return to the romanesque contributes to defining the aesthetic postulates that underpin the last thirty years of French literary production. The broader aim of this study is to interrogate the theoretical positions that might justify alternative readings of a development that could otherwise be considered purely in terms of regression to conservative standards of literary quality. The three authors considered in this study are exemplary of the diverse understandings of the developments of 20th-century literature, and the ways in which these understandings influence decisions pertaining to literary kinship and filiation.
