Republican state enterprise "Altai Botanical Garden" of the Committee of Science, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan 071300, Republic of Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan Region, Ridder, Ermakova str., 1 ABSTRACT The current paper represents ecological, biological, and resource studies of Hedysarum theinum Krasnob. at the Ivanovsky Mountain Range of the Kazakh Altai Mountains. We have provided a phytocoenotic description of the species’ habitat, and determined the ontogenesis, age composition of the coenopopulations, numbers, presence of pests and pathogenic organisms, as well as the seasonal rhythm of development of sweetvetch. We have found that Hedysarum theinum inhabits large territories of the Ivanovsky Mountain Range and undergoes excessive anthropogenic impact. The species does not form industrial reserves and may serve as a source of raw materials for the local pharmacy chain. Within the coenopopulations, the species acts as dominant or subdominant. The sweetvetch coenopopulations from different sites of the Ivanovsky Mountain Range have similar age composition with uniform age spectra: in all cases the absolute maxima account for mature reproductive individuals. The populations of this species have normal age distributions lacking certain stages, they are dominated by mature generative plants, the numbers of juvenile and premature individuals are low, whereas senile plants are completely absent. Seed productivity undergoes substantial fluctuations over the years, also depending on the altitude of the species’ habitat and climatic conditions during the vegetative period, while almost all altitudinal belts are marked by relatively high seed productivity. -

Movements of individuals within and among populations help to maintain genetic variability and population viability. erefore, understanding landscape connectivity is vital for effective species conservation. e snow leopard is endemic to mountainous areas of central Asia and occurs within 12 countries. We assess potential connectivity across the species’ range to highlight corridors for dispersal and genetic flow between populations, prioritizing research and conservation action for this wide-ranging, endangered top-predator. We used resistant kernel modeling to assess snow leopard population connectivity across its global range. We developed an expert-based resistance surface that predicted cost of movement as functions of topographical complexity and land cover. e distribution of individuals was simulated as a uniform density of points throughout the currently accepted global range. -

Major mountains include Saur, Tarbagatai, Dzungarian Alatau, Tien Shan, Pamir-Alai and Kopet Dag. Because a range of altitudinal belts exists, the region is characterized by high biological diversity at ecosystem, species and population levels. In addition, the contact between Asian and Mediterranean flora in Central Asia has created unique plant communities. More than 8100 plant species have been recorded for the territory of Central Asia; about 5000–6000 of them grow in the mountains. The aim of this review is to summarize all the available data from 1930 to date on alkaloid-containing plants of the Central Asian mountains. In Saur 301 of a total of 661 species, in Tarbagatai 487 out of 1195, in Dzungarian Alatau 699 out of 1080, in Tien Shan 1177 out of 3251, in Pamir-Alai 1165 out of 3422 and in Kopet Dag 438 out of 1942 species produce alkaloids. The review also tabulates the individual alkaloids which were detected in the plants from the Central Asian mountains. -

Growing Up Soviet in the Periphery: Imagining, Experiencing and Remembering Childhood in Kazakhstan, 1928-1953 by Mehmet Volkan Kaşıkçı A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved October 2020 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Laurie Manchester, Chair Agnes Kefeli Adrienne Edgar Anna Holian ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation discusses children and childhood in Soviet Kazakhstan from 1928 to 1953. By exploring images of, and for, children, and by focusing on children’s fates during and after the famine of 1930-33, I argue that the regime’s success in making children socialist subjects and creating the new Soviet person was questionable throughout the 1930s. The reach of Soviet ideological and cultural policies was limited in a decade defined by all kinds of shortcomings in the periphery which was accompanied by massive violence and destruction. World War 2 mobilized Central Asians and integrated the masses into the Soviet social and political body. The war transformed state- society relations and the meaning of being Soviet fundamentally changed. In this way, larger segments of society embraced the framework for Soviet citizenship and Soviet patriotism largely thanks to the war experience. This approach invites us to reconsider the nature of Sovietization in Central Asia by questioning the central role of ideology and cultural revolution in the formation of Soviet identities. My dissertation brings together images of childhood, everyday experiences of children and memory of childhood. On the one hand, the focus on children provides me an opportunity to discuss Sovietization in Central Asia. -
Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska and the Gobi Palaeontological Expeditions
ZOFIA KIELAN-JAWOROWSKA AND THE GOBI PALAEONTOLOGICAL EXPEDITIONS JOHN R. LAVAS During an illustrious scientific career that lasted more than 60 years, the late Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska greatly advanced the direction of research in several branches of invertebrate and vertebrate palaeontology. The general public largely knew Zofia as the leader of the famous joint Polish-Mongolian Gobi Expeditions of the 1960s–1970s and the spectacular (mainly dinosaurian) fossils that resulted from those ventures. Indeed, an enduring image that I associate with her name shows Zofia standing beneath one of her discov- eries, the enigmatic theropod Deinocheirus. Momentous as such finds were, Zofia’s principal research area was the phylogenetic relationships of the Mesozoic mammals retrieved during those expeditions, specifi- cally evidence from their brain structure and musculature. It is within this realm that she left her greatest scientific legacy in what had previously been a relatively poorly-developed branch of palaeontology due to the paucity and fragility of fossil material. As well as attaining the forefront of her chosen field, Zofia was a humanist with a unique ability to forge successful collaborations between researchers from the former Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON) countries and their Western counterparts at a time in history when it was difficult to do so. The inclination to rank Zofia alongside her compatriot Marie Curie (1867–1934) is not only appropriate in terms of the impact each made to science, but the fact that Zofia’s late husband was a radiobiologist and that they had spent two years working in Paris is surely more than coinci- dental. -
