A los 17 años, escribió un ensayo titulado “Día de orientación” en respuesta a una experiencia común: presentarse ante un grupo de desconocidos. Wang escribe: ¿Algo acerca de mí? ¿Cómo resumo, en treinta segundos, todo lo que soy, todo eso que se va sumando y equivale a ese pequeño y ordenado conjunto de cosas que llamo “Yo”? ¿Cómo me presento de una manera “comprensible”, necesitarán un manual de instrucciones? ¿Quién soy? y ¿qué significo para cualquiera de ustedes? En primer lugar, soy una chica que recorrió los pasillos de Toys “R” Us durante dos horas, buscando, en vano, una muñeca con un tono de piel amarillo. Soy una chica que se sentó en el piso frío del baño a las siete de la mañana a recortar los ojos de modelos caucásicas en las revistas e intentó adaptarlos a su rostro. Y, ¿quién o qué determina cuándo una persona empieza a sentirse estadounidense y deja de sentirse china?… Aún no soy ciudadana de los Estados Unidos de América, esta gran nación, aclamada como destino de generaciones y la tierra prometida de millones de personas. Huyo ante la sola mención de música para adolescentes. No entiendo nada cuando mis amigos hablan de la década de los ochenta o cuentan historias de sus padres cuando eran hippies. Y no me gusta el béisbol. La pregunta persiste: ¿Soy china? ¿Soy estadounidense? ¿O soy una mezcla infame de ambas, condenada a estar dividida entre las dos? No sé siquiera si en algún momento encuentre las respuestas. Mientras tanto, es hora de presentarme… Me pongo de pie y digo: “Mi nombre es Jennifer Wang”, y me siento enseguida. No hay otras palabras que me definan tan bien como esas.     PLESSY v. FERGUSON (1896) ORIGINS OF THE CASE In 1892, Homer Plessy took a seat in the “Whites Only” car of a train and refused to move. He was arrested, tried, and convicted in the District Court of New Orleans for breaking Louisiana’s segregation law. Plessy appealed, claiming that he had been denied equal protection under the law. The Supreme Court handed down its decision on May 18, 1896. THE RULING The Court ruled that separate-but-equal facilities for blacks and whites did not violate the Constitution. LEGAL REASONING CALIFORNIA STANDARDS Plessy claimed that segregation violated his right to 11.10.2 Examine and analyze the key events, policies, and court cases in the evolution of civil rights, including Dred Scott v. equal protection under the law. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson' has long stood as an ignominious marker in U.S. law, symbolizing the nation's highest legal sanction for the physical separation by race of persons in the United States. In ruling against thirty-four-year-old New Orleans shoemaker Homer Adolph Plessy's challenge to Louisiana's Separate Railway Act of 1890,2 the Court majority declared that we think the enforced separation of the races, as applied to the internal commerce of the state, neither abridges the privileges or immunities of the colored man, deprives him of his property without due process of law, nor denies him the equal protection of the laws, within the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.3 One commentator on the Court's treatment of African-American civil rights cast the Plessy decision as "the climactic Supreme Court pronouncement on segregated institutions."4 Historian C.

Esta manera de escribir en mi diario me agrada mucho más y ahora me cuesta esperar cada vez a que llegue el momento para sentarme a escribir en ti. ¡Estoy tan contenta de haberte traído conmigo! Domingo, 14 de junio de 1942 Lo mejor será que empiece desde el momento en que te recibí, o sea, cuando te vi en la mesa de los regalos de cumpleaños (porque también presencié el momento de la compra, pero eso no cuenta). El viernes 12 de junio, a las seis de la mañana ya me había despertado, lo que se entiende, ya que era mi cumpleaños. Pero a las seis todavía no me dejan levantarme, de modo que tuve que contener mi curiosidad hasta las siete menos cuarto. Entonces ya no pude más: me levanté y me fui al comedor, donde Moortje1, el gato, me recibió haciéndome carantoñas. Poco después de las siete fui a saludar a papá y mamá y luego al salón, a desenvolver los regalos, lo primero que vi fuiste tú, y quizá hayas sido uno de mis regalos más bonitos. Luego un ramo de rosas y dos ramas de peonías. Papá y mamá me regalaron una blusa azul, un juego de mesa, una botella de zumo de uva que a mi entender sabe un poco a vino (¿acaso el vino no se hace con uvas?), un rompecabezas, un tarro de crema, un billete de 2,50 florines y un vale para comprarme dos libros.

PUBLIC RIGHTS, SOCIAL EQUALITY, AND THE CONCEPTUAL ROOTS OF THE PLESSY CHALLENGE Rebecca J. Scott* This Article argues that the test case that gave rise to the 1896 deci- sion in Plessy v. Ferguson is best understood as part of a well- established, cosmopolitan traditionof anticaste activism in Louisiana rather than as a quixotic effort that contradicted nineteenth-century ideas of the boundaries of citizens' rights. By drawing a dividing line between civil and political rights, on the one hand, and social rights, on the other, the Supreme Court construed challenges to seg- regation as claims to a "social equality" that was beyond the scope of judicially cognizable rights.
