    Does race matter in international beauty pageants? A quantitative analysis of Miss World B S Z R W, PD U B C Abstract: Most research on race and beauty pageants uses qualitative research methods and focuses on national beauty pageants. For this reason it is unclear whether there are broad patterns of racial inequalities in international beauty pageants. My study addresses this issue by using a quantitative approach to examine whether race affects success rates in international beauty pageants. This study examines countries that have competed in the Miss World pageant from 1951 to 2011 and examine each country’s probability of winning and being in the semi- fi nals. The analysis shows that race matters. White countries have a much higher chance of winning and being in the semi-fi nals than non-white nations. Furthermore, white nations have been over-represented as winners and semi-fi nalists while non-white nations have been under-represented in both those categories. The patterns of success for white nations and lack of success for non-white nations demonstrates that beauty is not neutral and that global beauty pageants can be seen as a refl ection of racial hierarchies and a reaffi rmation of the ideology of white beauty. The exhibition also spotlights the global issue of desertification, the process by which fertile land is transformed into desert as a result of human-induced causes such as deforestation and poor agricultural practices, as well as drought conditions exacerbated by inadequate conservation of water resources and climate change. To complement the exhibition, the Museum is presenting a lecture on the subject of Expanding Deserts: A Global Concern, which features a subject-matter expert who will be discussing the rapid growth of deserts due to human activity and the initiatives underway to mitigate the global impacts of this trend. “Against the backdrop of Living Desert Dry, our goal is to delve more deeply into the issues and opportunities related to deserts,” says Dr. Gina Gould, Curator of Science at the Museum. “Around the world, deserts are home to culturally diverse societies; the native flora and fauna have evolved adaptations to not only survive but thrive under the hyper-arid conditions. Domingo, 14 de junio de 1942 Lo mejor será que empiece desde el momento en que te recibí, o sea, cuando te vi en la mesa de los regalos de cumpleaños (porque también presencié el momento de la compra, pero eso no cuenta). El viernes 12 de junio, a las seis de la mañana ya me había despertado, lo que se entiende, ya que era mi cumpleaños. Pero a las seis todavía no me dejan levantarme, de modo que tuve que contener mi curiosidad hasta las siete menos cuarto. Entonces ya no pude más: me levanté y me fui al comedor, donde Moortje1, el gato, me recibió haciéndome carantoñas. Poco después de las siete fui a saludar a papá y mamá y luego al salón, a desenvolver los regalos, lo primero que vi fuiste tú, y quizá hayas sido uno de mis regalos más bonitos. Luego un ramo de rosas y dos ramas de peonías. Papá y mamá me regalaron una blusa azul, un juego de mesa, una botella de zumo de uva que a mi entender sabe un poco a vino (¿acaso el vino no se hace con uvas?), un rompecabezas, un tarro de crema, un billete de 2,50 florines y un vale para comprarme dos libros.
