Press Release Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact Troy Ellen Dixon Director, Marketing & Communications 203 413-6735 | [email protected] Expanding Deserts: A Global Concern A Lecture Presented Free to the Public by the Bruce Museum on Tuesday, October 23 Featuring Miss Universe Leila Lopes Greenwich CT, October 12, 2012 – In Extreme Habitats: Living Desert Dry (now through March 3, 2013), the Bruce Museum is presenting a timely exhibition that explores the complex ecosystems of deserts by looking at how and where they form, examining plant and animal survival strategies and explaining the significance of these regions in our everyday lives. The exhibition also spotlights the global issue of desertification, the process by which fertile land is transformed into desert as a result of human-induced causes such as deforestation and poor agricultural practices, as well as drought conditions exacerbated by inadequate conservation of water resources and climate change. To complement the exhibition, the Museum is presenting a lecture on the subject of Expanding Deserts: A Global Concern, which features a subject-matter expert who will be discussing the rapid growth of deserts due to human activity and the initiatives underway to mitigate the global impacts of this trend. “Against the backdrop of Living Desert Dry, our goal is to delve more deeply into the issues and opportunities related to deserts,” says Dr. Gina Gould, Curator of Science at the Museum. “Around the world, deserts are home to culturally diverse societies; the native flora and fauna have evolved adaptations to not only survive but thrive under the hyper-arid conditions. But there is also concern about dryland deterioration and degradation and the effect it is having, and will have, on human populations; indeed, all species.” To that last point, on Tuesday, October 23 at 6:30 pm the Bruce Museum is pleased to host Ms. Leila Lopes. A native of Angola and Miss Universe 2011, Ms. Lopes is a Drylands Ambassador to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Appointed in November 2011 as a Drylands Ambassador by the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, Luc Gnacadja, Ms. Lopes comes from an African region where degradation of the land in the dryland areas is the foremost environmental challenge. In a statement released by Mr. Gnacadja at the time, he noted that “Drylands Ambassadors are appointed to take the lead in raising international Leila Lopes awareness of land degradation, its causes and possible solutions. The Drylands Ambassador To the UNCCD influence and aura that the Drylands Ambassadors possess can help us to achieve this essential endeavor for our common future, and we are delighted that Ms. Lopes has agreed to be a part of this cause.” Page 1 of 2 Press Release In her presentation – Desertification: A Perspective from the UNCCD Drylands Ambassador – Ms. Lopes will discuss the importance and impacts of desertification, land degradation and drought, and sustainable land management. Though part of her native country of Angola is threatened by desertification, Ms. Lopes understands that drylands are not a liability and that they hold great potential to solve some of the most pressing problems in advancing sustainable development. Upon accepting the appointment, Ms. Lopes said that she was humbled and honored to be called upon to serve as a Drylands Ambassador for the [UNCCD]. “This is an opportunity for me to be another voice for attending to land degradation and desertification throughout the world in order to create awareness on this important policy issue. By sharing knowledge and working together, we can help secure the health and productivity of all the drylands.” According to Gould, this presentation will be informative and engaging. “In addition to her advocacy on behalf of the UNCCD mission, Ms. Lopes has real-world experience with this issue. And when people are speaking about what they know – about what they have lived – they connect with people on an intellectual and emotional level.” The lecture is free but space is limited, so you are encouraged to register now. Send an email to [email protected] with the lecture date and number of attendees; or call 203 869-0376. As Miss Universe, Lopes has traveled the world as an advocate for HIV/Aids awareness as well as featured in numerous publications such as “New African Woman”, “Selecta” Magazine, and “L’Uomo Vogue.” Prior to being crowned, Ms. Lopes held the title of Miss Angola Universe and was active with various social causes in her country. She has worked with poor children and the elderly and has helped educate the Angolan community about HIV/AIDS. These are all concerns that resonate with a majority of the 1.5 billion poor people around the world who live off degrading land. About the UNCCD Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity, were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, UNCCD is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment, development and the promotion of healthy soils. The Convention's 195 signatory Parties work to alleviate poverty in the drylands, maintain and restore the land's productivity, and mitigate the effects of drought. • Does Race Matter in International Beauty Pageants? a Quantitative Analysis of Miss World B S Z R W , PD U B C
Does race matter in international beauty pageants? A quantitative analysis of Miss World B S Z R W, PD U B C Abstract: Most research on race and beauty pageants uses qualitative research methods and focuses on national beauty pageants. For this reason it is unclear whether there are broad patterns of racial inequalities in international beauty pageants. My study addresses this issue by using a quantitative approach to examine whether race affects success rates in international beauty pageants. This study examines countries that have competed in the Miss World pageant from 1951 to 2011 and examine each country’s probability of winning and being in the semi- fi nals. The analysis shows that race matters. White countries have a much higher chance of winning and being in the semi-fi nals than non-white nations. Furthermore, white nations have been over-represented as winners and semi-fi nalists while non-white nations have been under-represented in both those categories. The patterns of success for white nations and lack of success for non-white nations demonstrates that beauty is not neutral and that global beauty pageants can be seen as a refl ection of racial hierarchies and a reaffi rmation of the ideology of white beauty. Introduction Studying Race in Beauty Pageants than simple phenotypes, in beauty pageants Browsing through the headshots of the Although race is a socially constructed where the body is visually displayed, physical 2011 contestants on the websites of the Miss concept, the concept of race and racism appearance is a noticeable way of signifying World and the Miss Universe pageants, the persists3, and in order to study racial race.5 Moreover, the general public that view women’s beauty was indisputable.

Drylands Ambassadors are appointed to take a lead in raising international awareness of land degradation, its causes and possible solutions. The other recent appointees are Dr Dennis Garrity, outgoing Director General of the World Agroforestry Centre, South African gospel singer Deborah Fraser, and Spanish football star Carlos Marchena. “Miss Lopes comes from the African region where desertification, meaning the degradation of the land in the dryland areas, is the foremost environmental challenge. Part of her home country of Angola is threatened by desertification,” said Mr Gnacadja during the announcement. Recent studies show that up to 2 billion hectares of degraded land and forest globally have the potential for restoration. “Land degradation entrenches affected populations into poverty, food insecurity and hunger and corrodes the three pillars of sustainable development. Achieving the change needed will take strong advocacy and outreach, but for long-term sustainability to be achieved three things are essential,” Mr Gnacadja said. “We must commit to making the world land degradation neutral through preventive actions and by restoring an equivalent amount of the land we degrade every year. We must cultivate a culture of innovation and knowledge sharing required for an effective land stewardship, and we must contribute to the mainstreaming of sustainable land management techniques.
