So now you know there are worse places, and for me it is anywhere you are not. v PROLOGUE The room was emptying at an international academic conference in Lisbon. I had just delivered a paper on the memories of Cuban veterans about their time in Angola. One of my fellow panel members who had also stayed behind turned to me and said: “Oh I understand, you don’t really care about Angola; you are studying Cuba.” With these words he knocked the wind out of me. I told him that that was not true, and rambled on about how I do care about Angola, wished I had been able to do field research there, that for a variety of reasons was not able to, but that I hoped to in the future. He was correct, however, my project is essentially about Cuba and not Angola. This study is an attempt to better understand Cuban society by looking at one particular event in their history, the Cuban intervention in Angola. Like the Vietnam War for the United States or the Afghanistan War for the former Soviet Union, this event defined a generation, and has had long and lasting, deeply felt consequences in Cuban society. There are conflicting stories regarding almost every aspect of the nearly sixteen- year Cuban presence in Angola, underscoring the complexities and controversies of any war, but especially one during the Cold War in which the governments from around the world were involved. Although it is easy to get caught up in the political situation of the Cuban Revolution and the reasons why Cuba became involved in Angola, documenting the military history of the endeavor is not the primary objective of this work. Rather, I am vi interested in the stories of everyday Cuban soldiers and how their experience in Angola affected and shaped their lives, and how they made sense of the exchange between the two countries. At times in the process of researching and writing the dissertation, I myself lost sight of the objective, but I was fortunate that my Angolan and Cuban friends reminded me of the importance of telling their story; the importance of not having their voices erased, nor having them simply reduced to a history of battle tactics and Cold War propaganda. They pushed me forward. It challenges the notion of a “great divide” between Republic and Revolution by tracing contentious interactions between technocrats, politicians, and financial elites on one hand, and mobilized, mostly-Afro-descended tenants and shantytown residents on the other hand. The dynamics of housing inequality in Havana not only reflected existing socio- racial hierarchies but also produced and reconfigured them in ways that have not been systematically researched.

The following day, partisans of Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement triumphantly entered the capital city of Havana. For the rebels and many others, this event symbolized the end to social injustice, political corruption, and U.S. economic domination. As one of the “great” modern social upheavals, the Cuban Revolution impacted not just the history of Cuba, but the world as well. But evaluating this history has been the subject of rancorous debate for more than half a century. As one of the few socialist states left in the world, Cuba remains an enigma for many. This course will uncover the historic development and legacy of the Revolution while serving as an entry point to understanding Cuba both of the past and present. Themes will include the issues of economic dependency, revolutionary theory, social justice, race, gender, culture, and the always-volatile relations between Cuba and the United States.     Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread.

Introduction Since the 1960s, Cuban Americans have made social, economic, and political progress far beyond that of most immigrant groups that have come to the United States in the past fifty years. I will argue that the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) was very influential in helping the Cuban Americans achieve much of this progress. It is, however, important to note that Cubans had some distinct advantages from the beginning, in terms of wealth and education. These advantages helped this ethnic interest group to grow quickly and become powerful. Since its inception in the early 1980s, the CANF has continually been able to shape government policy on almost all issues related to Cuba. Until at least the end of the Cold War, the CANF and the Cuban American population presented a united front in that their main goal was to present a hard line towards Castro and defeat him; they sought any government assistance they could get to achieve this goal, from policy changes to funding for different dissident activities. In more recent years, Cubans have begun to differ in their opinions of the best policy towards Cuba. I will argue that this change along with other changes will decrease the effectiveness of the CANF.

The transitions in Central and Eastern Europe, Nicaragua, and Spain are being analyzed and lessons drawn for the future of Cuba. The project began in January 2002 and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development. Programs and Activities • The CTP is publishing original research, with practical alternative recommendations on various specific aspects of the transition process, commissioned and written for the CTP by ICCAS Staff and U.S. and foreign scholars with expertise on Cuba. • The CTP is developing four key databases: 1.
