Graduates, families and friends are cordially invited to attend a reception for graduate

students immediately following the Academic Hooding Ceremony in the Elaine C. Levitt Auditorium, Gershman Hall prior to the Commencement Ceremony at the Academy of Music. Academic Traditions

Led by the Grand Marshal carrying the University mace, the academic procession begins with the graduating seniors and graduate students, followed by the faculty from the three colleges and the division of Liberal Arts, who in turn are followed by the directors, deans, provost, distinguished guests, members of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Board and the president of the University.

The tradition of academic regalia dates from the twelfth century and is heavily influenced by clerical attire. The gowns for holders of a doctorate degree have bell-shaped sleeves, and are often trimmed in velvet. Master's degree hoods are usually shorter than those for Doctoral degrees. The color of the hood lining usually denotes the school's official color, and the velvet trim, the earned degree. For example, brown is the color reserved for fine arts degrees, pink for music, blue for philosophy, yellow/gold for science, purple for law, and white for literature. The color and shape of the hats and tassels is a matter of national, institutional or personal preference.

Students who are graduating with academic honors are wearing red sashes to denote their accomplishment.

The three students with the highest university grade point average receive the Emmons silver medallions. These symbols are shared from year to year.

Alumni and alumnae are distinguished by a rosette in the school colors of cardinal red and white.

Members of the Board of Trustees are designated by a rosette with gold ribbon, connoting their dedicated service and generosity to the University.

The University Mace and Presidential Medallion are the design of former dean of the Philadelphia College of Art, Richard H. Reinhardt.

The Presidential Medallion's grosgrain ribbon neckpiece was designed by former Philadelphia College of Art Fiber's Professor Warren Seelig

The Silver Star is the design of former professor and chair of the Crafts Department, Olaf Skoogfors.

The Silver Medallions are a gift from Wesley ('54, who designed them) and Ellen Emmons. Commencement

Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching Sherry Lefevre, Writing for Film and Television, College of Media and Comrnunication

Since 1991, when she joined the Liberal Arts faculty at The University of the Arts, Sherry Lefevre has been a bridge-maker between arts and departments at the University. When she began teaching freshman writing, Susan Viguers was the writing director and Professor Lefevre became increasingly involved in helping Professor Viguers manage the Freshman Project, working with faculty from departments throughout the University. When Professor Viguers obtained University funding for a program that would support her "Writing across the University" initiative. Professor Lefevre became a "Writing Specialist."

She collaborated with faculty in studio courses and helped them build writing into their studio work, which is how she became an "itinerant" faculty member within the University, moving from one department to another, from Graphic Design to Industrial Design to Animation to Photography, Theatre, Dance, Printmaking, Illustration and Sculpture.

Six years ago. Professor Lefevre moved to the College of Media and Communication, where she teaches in the Writing for Film and Television and Communication programs. To give students a taste of the real purpose of writing - to make ideas public - she initiated a UArts student newspaper Broadst. Presently, Professor Lefevre is working on developing a minor in professional writing.

President's Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Junior Faculty Member Brian Biggs, Illustration, College ofArt and Design

Brian Biggs was born in Little Rock, Ark., in 1968 and began drawing almost immediately. Pres- ently, he illustrates and animates for many clients, several with well known names such as The New York Times, The Museum of Modern Art, National Public Radio, Bell Sports, Knopf Books for Young Readers and Nickelodeon.

He earned a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York in 1990 and lived and worked in Paris and San Francisco before moving to Philadelphia in 1999. A nationally published artist. Biggs has illustrated numerous children's books, including the Shredderman series by Wendelin Van Draanen. He also designed "Modern Kids," a hip line of children's school supplies commis- sioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Just completing his fourth year as a full-time faculty member in the Illustration Department at The University of the Arts, Biggs says he has received mentoring, support and friendship at UArts and is thankful to the administration for taking the chance.

Mary Louise Beitzel Award for Distinguished Teaching Wayne St. David, School of Dance, College of Performing Arts

"Mr. Wayne," as he is known by so many, has been an ambassador for arts and culture for over 30 years. The coordinator of the jazz/theater dance department at The University of the Arts, Mr. Wayne has interjected his vigorous and dynamic jazz technique into musical theater and concert dance productions throughout the region.

As the artistic/academy/company director of South Philadelphia's Point Breeze Performing Arts Center (PBPAC), Mr. Wayne has designed socially aware theater productions dealing with random violence, drugs, homelessness and AIDS. Aside from initiating collaboration between the PBPAC and UArts, Mr. Wayne has made a significant impact on all of his students, many of whom have overcome insurmountable odds to become successful people in all walks of life.

He has mounted numerous dance productions involving large groups of performers at all levels of ability. His commercial activities include choreographic advertising specials for Dr. Pepper, Nike and other industrial productions. A choreographer for the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, Mr. Wayne has received numerous honors for his efforts, including the Cultures Build Communities Award (1999); Independence Foundation Cross-cultural Movements and Common Ground Arts Fellowship Award (2000); the Pew Charitable Trusts Dance Advance Program Fellowship Award (2001); and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council Fellowship Award (2001). Don Moyer, CAD

Don Moyer received a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design from the Philadelphia College of Art (now The University of the Arts) in 1970 and later a master of fine arts degree in graphic design from Yale University.

Moyer is enthusiastic about the power of visual storytelling and enjoys the chal- lenge of making complex topics clear and engaging. He writes and designs visual explanations he calls Foglifters(^'^) on diverse topics from global trade to manag- ing a restaurant and writes a monthly column for Harvard Business Review, called "Panel Discussion." Each one-page article teaches a simple business lesson visu- ally. He speaks at conferences about the power of making messages visible and how visual storytelling helps businesses. Also, he teaches a Writing Backwards Workshop to help writers and editors discover ways to better integrate visual storytelling into their projects.

After working for the Westinghouse Corporate Design Center for four years, Moyer co-founded in 1980 a communication planning and design firm now known as ThoughtForm. The firm works on a wide range of communication design projects, including publications, Web sites and exhibits. Clients include Steelcase, McDonald's, Caterpillar, Otis, UnitedHealth Group and others.

An advocate of automated publishing, Moyer frequently uses databases to collect, organize and manipulate content and streamline the production of publications, Web sites, maps and diagrams using software that he and his team develop. One

example is the award-winning Wine Watch Guide, an annual publication that summarizes prize-winning wines from major competitions.

Don's wife Karen, who teaches graphic design at Carnegie Mellon University, is also a graduate of The University of the Arts. Past Honorary Degree Recipients

William M. Hurt

With an Obie, a Tony nomination, three Oscar nominations and an Academy

Award, WiUiam Hurt is one of the most respected actors working today. An Acad- emy Award winner for his role as Luis MoUna, a flamboyantly gay window dresser incarcerated in Latin America in 1986's Kiss of the Spider Woman, William Hurt was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award this year for his criti- cally acclaimed role in David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, about an average family thrust into the spotlight after the father commits a seemingly self-defense murder at his diner. Hurt earned Best Actor nods for his roles in Broadcast News (1987) and Children of a Lesser God (1986).

After extensive stage work with regional theater in Oregon, where he now lives, and the Circle Repertory Company and the New York Shakespeare Festival in New York, William Hurt made his screen debut in Altered States (1980) as a scientist who performs experiments on himself. He burst into the public consciousness in the steamy thriller Body Heat (1981) with Kathleen Turner and followed that with the ensemble drama The Big Chill (1983). Hurt worked with director Lawrence Kasdan in both Body Heat and The Big Chill, a trend that continued with 1988's The Accidental Tourist (also with Turner) and 1990's I Love You to Death.

Mr. Hurt trained at Tufts University and New York's Juilliard School of Music and Drama. He spent the early years of his career on the stage between drama school, summer stock, regional repertory and Off Broadway, appearing in more than 50 productions, including Henry V, 5th of July, Hamlet, Richard H, Hurlyburly (earn- ing him a Tony nomination), My Life (winning an Obie Award for Best Actor), A Midsummer's Night's Dream and Good.

For radio, William Hurt has read Paul Theroux's The Great Railway Bazaar for the BBC Radio Four and Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx. He has recorded The Polar Express, The Boy Who Drew Cats and narrated the documentaries, Searching for

The University of the Arts is devoted exckisively to educa- tion and training in the arts. Within this community of art- ists the process of learning engages, refines, and articulates all of our creative capabilities. Our institution was among the first to contribute to the formation of an American tra- dition in arts education. We continue to develop interpret- ers and innovators who influence our dynamic culture.

Mission

• To educate and professionally train artists in the visual and performing arts, in design, in media, and in writing;

• To grant graduate and undergraduate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in the arts;

• To provide educational programs centered in the arts to multiple populations;

• To encourage relationships among the arts;

• To promote high standards in creativity and scholarship;

• To prepare artists who will contribute responsibly to our culture;

• To challenge students to think critically, joining knowl edge and skill to their individual creative vision;

• To anticipate and to cultivate new art forms as they emerge.

The University of the Arts offers instruction across a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines. We serve the community in which we reside, professions for which we prepare new members, and ultimately the society whose culture we both sustain and advance.

The University's goal is to direct each student's quest for creative self-expression towards a productive role in soci- ety. Our programs develop the student's talent, aesthetic sensibility, conceptual and perceptual acumen, cultural awareness, and professional expertise. The curricula integrate specific knowledge and skills needed for techni- cal mastery of the various arts disciplines with a significant examination of conceptual and humanistic studies.

To this end, the University must gather and retain a distin- guished teaching faculty offering a breadth of professional expertise. Their scholarly work and artistic exploration have national and international consequences for the in- stitution. Our educational programs seek to stimulate and influence not only our students but the very disciplines that we teach.
