David Haye Beats More Than 9000 Poker DAVID HAYE BEATS MORE THAN 9,000 POKER PLAYERS AT WORLD RECORD- BREAKING TOURNAMENT Former world boxing champion goes from poker novice to finishing 40th out of more than 9,000 players at Grosvenor Casinos’ Goliath Poker Tournament in Coventry Goliath is expected to break records to become the biggest annual live poker tournament in the world Monday 5th August: David Haye has defied the odds after beating more than 9,000 poker players at what is expected to be a record-breaking year for the Goliath Poker Tournament in Coventry. Having confessed to not knowing the difference between clubs and spades a year ago, the former Unified World Cruiserweight and WBA Heavyweight Boxing Champion placed 40th out of 9,300 players at the Grosvenor Casinos’ event and was just four hands away from making the final day. The Hayemaker went from poker novice to battling through the levels and at one stage was sitting in the Top 5 players of the tournament with a chip count of 5.2million. But with just 12 minutes to go, The Hayemaker’s hand was forced to go all in – losing to a superior flush hand. Receiving a standing ovation from amateur and professional players for his incredible efforts against Goliath, Haye in his latest Instagram post, said: “One year ago, I travelled to Coventry to announce I’d be taking on the biggest live poker tournament outside of Vegas Grosvenor Casinos’ Goliath. “It’s been ten years since I toppled the real life ‘Goliath’ Nikolai Valuev to win the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship. A decade later, I again found myself in the same position in David vs Goliath. “I’d never played a hand of poker in my life! I’ll be the first to admit, I completely underestimated the sheer complexity. The months that followed were filled with highs and lows, uncovering a world I never knew existed. That simply motivated me to immerse myself in the art, travel the planet to play with and learn from the world’s best - so come 40th out of 9,300 players is bittersweet. “The kind tutelage and stellar advice I’ve been given by so many pros has been invaluable. Special thanks to Audley Harrison who travelled to three continents coaching and mentoring me. May my poker journey long continue.” With 9,300 entrants in this year’s field, Grosvenor Casinos’ expects this year’s Goliath Poker Tournament to officially become the biggest annual live poker tournament in the world. The winner of this year’s tournament was Lee Reynolds from Walsall who won the £64,601 first prize on Sunday 4th August at the Ricoh Arena. Russell Tamplin, Head of Poker for Grosvenor Casinos, said: “Goliath continues to break records on the live annual poker circuit. The talent in the field has been incredibly high and with the added edge of David vs Goliath the drama and atmosphere has created a memorable event. “When Grosvenor Casinos set off on its journey with The Hayemaker, we believed as a world champion and elite sportsman he had the natural ability to take on the physical and mental challenge of learning poker. David has surpassed all expectations placing 40 in this field and should be very proud of what he has achieved proving the doubters wrong.” Grosvenor Casinos’ Goliath Poker Tournament 2019 took place between 27 July to 4 August 2019 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. • Gloria Allred Statement
Contact: Gloria Allred (323) 653-6530 E-mail: [email protected] Today, we are on the agenda of the California State Athletic Commission to appeal a decision by fight officials to stop Christy Martin’s last fight against Dakota Stone at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 4, 2011. We will argue that a discriminatory double standard, based on gender and sexual stereotyping, played a major role in the decision to terminate the bout, resulting in depriving Christy Martin of her 50th victory in a professional boxing match. Christy Martin is the Women’s Super Welterweight Boxing Champion of the world. She was the first woman athlete in any sport to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Last November, her then husband is alleged to have attempted to murder her by stabbing her, shooting her and pistol whipping her. He 1 has been arrested and is in custody, awaiting trial in October on a charge of attempted murder. Despite this horrific experience, Christy was determined to continue to fight and win her 50th victory. After being released from the hospital, she began intensive training and the fight that she had hoped to win finally took place on June 4, 2011 against Dakota Stone. This was not the first bout between Ms. Martin and Ms. Stone. In fact, Ms. Martin had soundly beaten Ms. Stone on September 9, 2009 and Ms. Martin actually did so with a broken hand. In the June 4, 2011 fight, in the fourth round and with Christy ahead, Ms. Martin suffered an apparent hand injury to her right hand; however, she continued to fight hard for the rest of the round and used her right hand a number of times.

It aims to provide an explanation of the relationship between boxing, its embodied practices and local routine performance and the economic culture which makes it possible and drives the sport along particular trajectories. This chapter starts with the dialogue between the economic demands of globalized sport and the links between the economic context and local practices and investments in the sport. The media are a focus in this chapter because of their powerful involvement in the making of the cultural economy of boxing. The chapter uses examples of the representation of boxing and the making of its celebrities and heroes in shaping its cultural economy as well as the particularities of boxing and its capacities for change, for example through its localized practices and the continuance of amateur boxing. The chapter offers a discussion of some of the capacities boxing has for attracting illegitimate as well as legitimate finance and the complicated intersection of personal and local commitments and the forces of global capital.

Povetkin, Chagaev clash for vacant WBA Heavyweight Title on August 27 / Helenius to face Liakhovich Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KOs) and Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs) will clash for the vacant WBA Heavyweight Title in Erfurt on August 27. In the co-featured main event, WBA & WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Robert Helenius will collide with Siarhei Liakhovich. “It is going to be a fantastic night of heavyweight boxing,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “This will be a great treat for boxing fans all around the world.” After Wladimir Klitschko added the WBA belt to his IBF & WBO titles, the WBA made him super champion and the title became vacant. Top- ranked Chagaev and Povetkin, the number two, now fight for the title. “I am really looking forward to the fight,” Povetkin stated. The 31- year-old, unbeaten in 21 fights, would have loved to fight for the title at an earlier stage, but the death of his father put him through a rough spell last year. “That´s past history now,” Kalle Sauerland added. “Alexander needed some time to get over the sad news. But now he is ready for a world title fight. He has always been one of the most talented heavyweight contenders out there. Now he will finally capture the title.” Chagaev will be eager to regain the title he once won from The Russian Giant Nikolai Valuev in April 2007. “It is going to be an exciting fight of two equally talented fighters,” Universum boss Klaus-Peter Kohl said. “Both had great amateur careers and won world championships, Povetkin even won the Olympic gold medal.
