Unbeaten Heavyweights Step up to the Challenge on NBC Sports Network Inaugural Fight Night Broadcast
PRESS RELEASE January 17, 2012 Unbeaten Heavyweights Step Up to the Challenge on NBC Sports Network Inaugural Fight Night Broadcast In a classic match-up of boxer vs. puncher, two talented, undefeated Philadelphia heavyweights have agreed to move up into the spotlight and put their perfect records on the line this coming Saturday, January 21st at Philadelphia's legendary Asylum Arena on the inaugural broadcast of the NBC Sports Network's "Fight Night" boxing series. Coverage on the NBC Sports Network begins Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. The spectacular cross-town match-up of equally talented rivals will pit Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm and Bryant "Bye Bye" Jennings in the ten-round co-main event. Byarm and Jennings will risk their undefeated records and their neighborhood pride as each takes on the role of a real life "Rocky" and steps into the ring on short notice. The originally scheduled main event, featuring heavyweights Eddie Chambers and Sergei Liakhovich, was scrapped when Chambers revealed on Friday that he had suffered two broken ribs in training. "This series is about giving the fans exciting, action-packed fights where the outcome is in doubt," said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. "It is truly a shame that Chambers and Liakhovich cannot fight on Saturday, but athletes get injured. We tried all weekend to find a suitable replacement to face Liakhovich, but truly competitive opposition could not be found on such short notice. Last night we decided that it would be in the best interests of the fans and the series to go in another direction and present a fight that will live up to the standards that we have set for this project. -

Gloria Allred Statement
Contact: Gloria Allred (323) 653-6530 E-mail: [email protected] Today, we are on the agenda of the California State Athletic Commission to appeal a decision by fight officials to stop Christy Martin’s last fight against Dakota Stone at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 4, 2011. We will argue that a discriminatory double standard, based on gender and sexual stereotyping, played a major role in the decision to terminate the bout, resulting in depriving Christy Martin of her 50th victory in a professional boxing match. Christy Martin is the Women’s Super Welterweight Boxing Champion of the world. She was the first woman athlete in any sport to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Last November, her then husband is alleged to have attempted to murder her by stabbing her, shooting her and pistol whipping her. He 1 has been arrested and is in custody, awaiting trial in October on a charge of attempted murder. Despite this horrific experience, Christy was determined to continue to fight and win her 50th victory. After being released from the hospital, she began intensive training and the fight that she had hoped to win finally took place on June 4, 2011 against Dakota Stone. This was not the first bout between Ms. Martin and Ms. Stone. In fact, Ms. Martin had soundly beaten Ms. Stone on September 9, 2009 and Ms. Martin actually did so with a broken hand. In the June 4, 2011 fight, in the fourth round and with Christy ahead, Ms. Martin suffered an apparent hand injury to her right hand; however, she continued to fight hard for the rest of the round and used her right hand a number of times. -

Every hour, a different expert hosts some form of guerrilla counseling on TV. It's because of all this competition that daytime- television experts now resemble academics in specialization. On the talk shows, there aren't just adultery experts, there are commentators for every form of illicit intercourse. This year alone I've seen two men and a woman who specialize in my-wife-slept-with-my-daughter's-boyfriend-who-is-a- high-school-quarterback cases. I've always assumed these pundits chose their fields for some autobiographical reason. So, a few days after Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield, I offered a half-dozen talk shows my services as a "biting expert." I'm someone who knows a lot, I said on their voice mail, about "chomping on flesh under extreme stress." Anxious for a cannibal, three panting producers called me back within two hours. I shared with them the story of how, in an unfortunate incident at summer camp when I was 11, the other cabin nerd tried to push my head into a toilet. With my forehead just inches from the water, I did the only thing I could think of: I lifted my head up and bit him on the cheek. -

Lamanna to Take on Kendal Mena in Main Event on Saturday, March 19 at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City
Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna to take on Kendal Mena in main event on Saturday, March 19 at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City Atlantic City, NJ (February 26, 2016)–On Saturday night, March 19, Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna will headline in an 8-round Welterweight bout when he fights Kendal Mena at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City . The card is promoted by Rising Promotions in association with Vincent M. Ponte’s Gulf Stream Promotions. LaManna (19-1, 7 KO’s) of nearby Millville, New Jersey will be making his second consecutive appearance at The Claridge. LaManna won a 8-round unanimous decision over Ariel Vasquez on December 5th. LaManna used his reach and height and worked behind his jab to keep Vasquez at bay. As the fight wore on, LaManna started to dominate with body punches and cruised home to victory to the tune of 79-72 on two scorecards and 78-73. The 24 year-old LaManna turned professional in 2011 and won his first sixteen bouts that were highlighted by wins over Ashandi Gibbs & Jamaal Davis. “I really don’t know much about Mena, but I am preparing to the best of my ability to handle whatever it is he brings to the table. Records don’t mean anything to me, all I know is he beat twenty men and has knocked out eleven of them,”said LaManna “Training camp has been great. In this camp my team and I have been focusing more on working on the basics. We believe I have natural talent and I’m excited to see when it all comes to place.” Since suffering his only loss to world ranked Middleweight Antoine Douglas on ShoBox: The New Generation, LaManna has won three straight which includes a 6-round unanimous decision over rugged Ayi Bruce on September 26th in Beach Haven, New Jersey.
