There was the whole punks versus skins thing. There was that back drop, so it was a pretty obvious place to say something about it, and it’s cool to have a scene that allows for that discussion. That’s what gives it power in a way. The hardcore scene is like high school. There’s the typical bullshit that goes on everywhere, but it’s cooler because it’s like a musical high school and there’s something kind of romantic about that. There was also a lot of back and forth between hip- hop and hardcore at the time, too. There was a time when there was a lot of racism but there was a whole backlash against that. -

This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. Ansonsten steht sowohl dieses Grauzone Info als auch das Info-Beisl ganz im Zeichen der österreichischen EU-Präsidentschaft und des damit verbundenen EU-Gipfels der VerteidigungsministerInnen Anfang März in Ibk. Infos zur EU- Präsidentschaft, ein Text von der Gruppe MOVE und zu Widerstand gegen den europäischen Koloss finden sich im Info, wir hoffen natürlich auf eine rege Beteiligung an den Protesten. Ausserdem gibt es noch einen kurzen Auszug eines Interviews mit Youssef, einem Schwulenaktivisten und indymedia-Mitarbeiter, den wir in Beirut getroffen haben und der uns viel über Homosexualität im arabischen Raum erzählt hat. -
