The general science of its study is philology and its Turing Machine is what scholars call the Critical Edition. Driven by the historical emergence of online communication, this book investigates their character and relation. Although it is cumulatively or ga nized, each chapter has an integrity of its own, so a seriatim reading might not be best for every reader. As the ti- tles of the three parts indicate, the book weaves a set of discussions around the relation of theory and method within the general horizon of an histori- cal critique. Part I engages the issues through the long- standing tension between the claims of philosophy and philology. It begins to investigate a key theme of the book: that a functional refl ection on literature and culture should be- gin as a question of method rather than theory, and hence with a study of the critical scholarly edition and its historical and institutional character. Pivoting on the controversy between Wilamowitz and Nietzsche, the dis- cussions in Chapters 1–3 accept the discourse of Continental Philosophy as their conceptual framework. This is done in order to give the relevant historical shape to the book’s philosophical and theoretical issues. Moving away from that discourse, Part II examines the relation of the- ory and method in the strongly procedural terms that have emerged under the horizon of digital technology. Chapters 4 and 5 are the most theoreti- cal in the book since they sketch an interpretive method that maps digital to traditional philological functions. The centrality of the critical edition is reexamined in Chapter 6 in relation to its new digital problems and affordances. Finally, the question “What is to be done?” frames the issues taken up in Part III, which reengages in more practical ways the historical and x preface institutional issues raised in Part I. Chapter 7 argues the need to situate humanities research and pedagogy, including close interpretational prac- tices, within our present (and changing) institutional horizon. Chapters 8 and 9 then lay out two exemplary case studies. Each suggests the inter- pretive expectations that have emerged for literary scholars because of the coming of digital technology. The Introduction provides an overview of the book. The Conclusion is a set of cautionary refl ections addressed most particularly to scholars of the West. But as the technology of cultural memory shifts from bibliographical to digital machines, a diffi cult question arises: what do we do with the books? This is a problem for society at large and many people are working at it, none more assiduously than certain ex- pert persons, often technicians. Highly skilled and motivated as they are, book history and the complex machineries of books fall outside their pro- fessional expertise. Humanist scholars, the long- recognized monitors of cultural memory, register a problem in this situation. For humanist think- ing has been shaped by the institutions and the technology of books.1 Prima facie, these problems must now be approached in digital terms and venues. Much of my work for the past twenty years has taken ex- actly that approach, through the founding of institutions like IATH and NINES, and in helping to build information machines like The Rossetti Archive, IVANHOE, and Juxta.2 But I want to take up the question again in a more traditional form— this book and the older technology it repre- sents. Now more than ever, I believe, we need to understand how biblio- graphical technology works. Designing optimal digital environments re- quires it. The notorious “Crisis in the Humanities,” still with us, is by no means simply an intramural problem for an ivory tower and bookish academy. Society at large is sorely mistaken when it views cultural studies as a surplus educational function—trivial, it is often thought, when set beside (for instance) those STEM fi elds of science, technology, engineering, and math. For all their importance, those disciplines are unequipped to inves- tigate the relation of language and literature to society. 2 introduction Why that understanding is a precious resource for our present presentist culture is one of the two primary concerns of this book. The other is prac- tical: how to exploit that resource for societies now moving to orga nize their cultural memories in digital forms. The practical aim is primarily di- rected to the traditional custodians of cultural memory. It argues that tex- tual and editorial scholarship, often marginalized in humane studies as a narrowly technical domain, should be shifted back to the center of human- ist attention. Understanding the technologies of book culture is the begin- ning of wisdom for any practical approach to the so- called digital humani- ties. But you can’t do that well unless you have an intimate acquaintance with the scholarship of textualities. That scholarship once had a name to conjure with: philology. The interests of this book thus reach back to the nineteenth century, when philology gained an apex of achievement, and when advances in global communication began to pick up speed. Not

Attending to this gap in the scholarly literature, this dissertation challenges conventional depictions of Plato as hostile to diversity by showing that Plato makes a compelling case for why we should engage with foreigners: the epistemological benefits of cross-cultural engagement. Through exegetical readings of the Republic, Laws, Phaedrus, and Menexenus, I argue that Plato finds cross-cultural dialogue epistemologically beneficial owing to its ability to provoke us to philosophize together, an activity at once conducive to the quest for wisdom and generative of friendship. Put simply, conversations with foreigners perform the same role as the Socratic gadfly of stinging us into consciousness. This finding has major implications for the field of political theory and, specifically, for the role of the new subfield commonly referred to as comparative political theory. By demonstrating the centrality of cross-cultural dialogue to Plato’s conception of political theory, this dissertation suggests that comparative political theory is not a deviation from the tradition of Western political theory, but a restoration of it.

    Servile Spartans: The problems of liberal education in Aristotle’s Politics Presented at What is Liberal Education For? St. John’s College (Santa Fe), October 18, 2014 Thornton Lockwood Quinnipiac University ABSTRACT: In the last two books of the Politics, Aristotle articulates a vision of education for his best regime in contrast to what he takes to be the goal and practices of the educational system of Sparta’s famous agôgê. Although Aristotle never refers to his program as liberal education, clearly he takes its goal to be the production of free citizens (hoi eleutheroi), which includes both males and females in his best regime. By contrast, in several places Aristotle characterizes the results of the Spartan system as “crude” (phortikos), “slavish” (andrapodôdes), and “servile” (banauson). I argue that Aristotle’s criticism of Spartan education both elucidates his general understanding of Sparta but also serves as a foil which can elucidate his own notion of liberal education. Further, I argue that Aristotle’s characterization of Spartan education as “slavish” and “servile” calls into question the claim that his notion of what is banausic is simply an expression of class prejudice. I conclude the paper by identifying some inconsistencies between liberal education in the Politics and elsewhere in Aristotle’s corpus.     SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HAPPINESS IN THE REPUBLIC: PLATO’S TWO PRINCIPLES1 Rachana Kamtekar2 Abstract: In the Republic, Socrates says that social justice is ‘doing one’s own’, i.e. ‘everyone must practice one of the occupations in the city for which he is natu- rally best suited’. One would ordinarily suppose social justice to concern not only the allocation of duties but also the distribution of benefits. I argue that this expec- tation is fulfilled not by Plato’s conception of social justice, but by the normative basis for it, Plato’s requirement of aiming at the happiness of all the citizens. I argue that Plato treats social justice as a necessary but not sufficient means to hap- piness that guarantees only the production of the greatest goods; ensuring that these goods are distributed so as to maximize the happiness of the whole city requires a direct application of Plato’s happiness principle, which I interpret individualistically and then use to explain women’s equality in work and education.     THE DYNAMICS OF INNOVATION Newness and Novelty in the Athens of Aristophanes Armand D'Angour University College London Thesis submitted for Ph.D. in Classics March 1998 BIEL uxºv, The Dynamics of Innovation Abstract ABSTRACT This study looks at the dynamics of innovation: why innovation occurs, what newness means in diverse areas of life, how social, cultural and individual attitudes to novelty interact, and the wider impact of innovation. The historical focus is ancient Athens, a society well known for its originality and creativity. Despite Athens' well-known competitiveness and flair for innovation, classical historians have tended to emphasise its traditionalism and respect for the past. However, the comedies of Aristophanes testify to the deliberate pursuit of innovation and to the effects of rapid and wide-ranging change in the late fifth and early fourth centuries B. C. They are adduced, together with other sources for the period, as evidence for the kinds of innovation that took place in politics, law, religion and warfare, as well as in specialist skills (technai) such as rhetoric, the visual arts, music, and medicine. The sources reveal diverse reactions, ranging from ambivalence and anxiety to excitement and optimism, to the experience of newness in these culturally key areas of Athenian life. Attitudes and behaviour differed between individuals and social groups, depending on the area of innovation. A combination of factors served to encourage the drive to innovate: material circumstances such as commercialism, war, and imperial rule; social pressures such as competitiveness, democratic openness, and the desire for acclaim; and technical imperatives such as the pursuit of accuracy, efficacy, and originality.

  • Voegelin, Diotima, and the Metaxy
    Metaxy http://www.lsu.edu/artsci/groups/voegelin/society/2003 Papers/Rhodes.shtml Copyright 2003 James M. Rhodes The word "metaxy" () is a Greek preposition, meaning "between." Normally, Greek philosophers use "metaxy" much as we use "between" in numerous everyday settings, without great significance. However, there is a line in Plato's Symposium in which Diotima defines Eros as "a great daimon," adding that "the whole of the daimonic is between [metaxy] god and mortal" (202d13-e1). In that line, and in the surrounding passages that explicate it, the preposition acquires the status of a symbol or an index of the ontological rank of Eros, the mysterious reality that Diotima and Socrates regard as the most important force animating our lives. Eric Voegelin was greatly impressed by this analysis of the daimonic Eros, so much so that he designated the preposition "metaxy" as a Platonic technical term and transformed it into a noun, calling it "the metaxy," or "the Metaxy," in scores of instances. Eventually, he came to think that he was dedicating his life's work to the exploration of this Metaxy, writing to Ellis Sandoz that: "From my first contact with such works as the Cloud of Unknowing, to my more recent understanding of the mystical problem . the great issue [has been] : not to stop at what may be called classical mysticism, but to restore the problem of the Metaxy for society and history." (1) One facet of "the problem of the Metaxy" is that Voegelin's transfer of "metaxy" from the relational to the substantive category of speech and his treatment of it as a major Platonic concept are themselves problematic.
