Last of all, I would like to thank my household, the McBurlingfoords, for offering endless support and distractions over the past year. 1 A Note to the Reader The abbreviations of ancient authors follow Liddell-Scott-Jones conventions, or Oxford Classical Dictionary as the alternative on the rare occasion. Editions of Greek and Latin texts are as they appear in the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and Bibliotheca Teubneriana Latina respectively. In the case of Philo of Byzantium’s Pneumatics, I have prioritised Carra de Vaux’s edition. I refer to dates using BC and AD to avoid any confusion, and have opted for Latin forms of Greek names. Individual Greek words and very short phrases have been transliterated and I offer ē and ō for eta and omega respectively. Figures 3-22 have been adapted from either Schmidt or Woodcroft except figures 9 and 18 which are from Carra de Vaux and have not been modified. Attending to this gap in the scholarly literature, this dissertation challenges conventional depictions of Plato as hostile to diversity by showing that Plato makes a compelling case for why we should engage with foreigners: the epistemological benefits of cross-cultural engagement. Through exegetical readings of the Republic, Laws, Phaedrus, and Menexenus, I argue that Plato finds cross-cultural dialogue epistemologically beneficial owing to its ability to provoke us to philosophize together, an activity at once conducive to the quest for wisdom and generative of friendship. Put simply, conversations with foreigners perform the same role as the Socratic gadfly of stinging us into consciousness. This finding has major implications for the field of political theory and, specifically, for the role of the new subfield commonly referred to as comparative political theory. By demonstrating the centrality of cross-cultural dialogue to Plato’s conception of political theory, this dissertation suggests that comparative political theory is not a deviation from the tradition of Western political theory, but a restoration of it.

WEBER Weill Cornell Medical College–Qatar Abstract: This contribution examines Shakespeare’s knowledge of the cosmological theories of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) as well as recent claims that Shakespeare possessed specialized knowledge of technical astronomy. Keywords: Shakespeare, William; Copernicus, Nicolaus; renaissance astronomy 1. Introduction Although some of his near contemporaries lamented the coming of “The New Philosophy,” Shakespeare never made unambiguous or direct reference to the heliocentric theories of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) in his drama or poetry. Peter Usher, however, has recently argued in two books Hamlet’s Universe (2006) and Shakespeare and the Dawn of Modern Science (2010) that Hamlet is an elaborate allegory of Copernicanism, which in addition heralds pre-Galilean telescopic observations carried out by Thomas Digges. Although many of Usher’s arguments are excessively elaborate and speculative, he raises several interesting questions. Just why did Shakespeare, for example, choose the names of Rosenskrantz and Guildenstern for Hamlet’s petard-hoisted companions, two historical relatives of Tycho Brahe (the foremost astronomer during Shakespeare’s floruit)? What was Shakespeare’s relationship to the spread of Copernican cosmology in late Elizabethan England?     Sviatoslav Dmitriev The Theoric Fund, the Athenian fi nance in the 330s, and Apollodorus Abstract This article examines the history and role of the Theoric Fund in Athens, focusing on evidence and arguments in the long-running debate about whether a legal prohibition existed against channeling the surplus budget money designated for the Theoric Fund to military purposes. The argument here is that Libanius’ reference to this prohibition as being enforced by the death penalty for at least some time in the 340s cannot simply be rejected by adducing the evidence about either the proposal to have a public vote on diverting this money for military purposes, as was moved by Apollodorus in the early 340s, or the way in which the Theoric Fund operated in the 330s and 320s. Quite a lot has been written about the Theoric Fund, whose main declared purpose was to distribute money for public entertainment to qualifi ed Athe- nians, primarily for two reasons: the contested dating of its establishment, and the uncertainty about whether there existed a prohibition on diverting its money for other purposes. The foundation of the Theoric Fund is variously attributed to Pericles, to Agyrrhius in the early fourth century, or, according to the ma- jority opinion, to Diophantus and Eubulus in the mid-350s.1 Pinpointing the exact date of its establishment might not be as important as some think, since it is likely that the Fund, and the very idea of fi nancing public entertainment, evolved over time, paralleling the progress of Athenian democracy, which is 1 Pericles: Schol.
