Walmart1Percent.Org WALTON FAMILY “PHILANTHROPY”: A Distraction from the Walmart Economy Americans believe in the power of charitable giving. Eighty-eight percent of American households give to charity, contributing more than $2,000 per year on average.1 Despite their charitable inclinations, most American families, acting on their own, lack the financial resources to make a significant impact on the problems facing our society. The Walton family, majority owner of Walmart, is a notable exception. As members of the richest family in the United States, the Waltons have $140 billion at their disposal—enough wealth to make a positive mark on the world and still leave a fortune for their descendants. The Waltons certainly wish to be seen as a force for good. Their company claims to help people “live better” and the Walton Family Foundation mission statement speaks of “creating opportunity so that individuals and communities can live better in today’s world.”2 But that mission statement seems ironic, given that many of the most acute challenges facing American families in 2014 could rightfully be viewed as symptoms of our “Walmart economy,” characterized by rising inequality and economic insecurity. -

Award-winning television journalist Anderson Cooper has traveled the globe, reporting from war zones and scenes of natural and man-made disasters, as well as covering stories on political and social issues. Cooper is a ubiquitous presence on American television, for in addition to being a news anchor, he also hosts a talk show. Cooper is the son of heiress and designer Gloria Vanderbilt and her fourth husband, Wyatt Cooper. In his memoir, Dispatches from the Edge (2006), Cooper stated that his parents' "backgrounds could not have been more different." Whereas his mother descends from one of American best-known and wealthiest families, his father was born into a poor farm family in the small town of Quitman, Mississippi. When he was sixteen he moved to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans with his mother and five of his seven siblings. Anderson Cooper wrote that his "father fell in love with New Orleans from the start" and delighted in its culture. After graduating from Francis T. Nicholls High School, however, Wyatt Cooper headed to California to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Although he found work on both screen and stage, he eventually turned to screenwriting for Twentieth Century Fox. Wyatt Cooper and Vanderbilt married in 1964 and took up residence in a luxurious mansion in New York City. The couple had two sons, Carter, born in 1965, and Anderson, born on June 3, 1967. -

Famous Journalist Research Project Name:____________________________ The Assignment: You will research a famous journalist and present to the class your findings. You will introduce the journalist, describe his/her major accomplishments, why he/she is famous, how he/she got his/her start in journalism, pertinent personal information, and be able answer any questions from the journalism class. You should make yourself an "expert" on this person. You should know more about the person than you actually present. You will need to gather your information from a wide variety of sources: Internet, TV, magazines, newspapers, etc. You must include a list of all sources you consult. For modern day journalists, you MUST read/watch something they have done. (ie. If you were presenting on Barbara Walters, then you must actually watch at least one interview/story she has done, or a portion of one, if an entire story isn't available. If you choose a writer, then you must read at least ONE article written by that person.) Source Ideas: Biography.com, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN or any news websites. NO WIKIPEDIA! The Presentation: You may be as creative as you wish to be. You may use note cards or you may memorize your presentation. You must have at least ONE visual!! Any visual must include information as well as be creative. Some possibilities include dressing as the character (if they have a distinctive way of dressing) & performing in first person (imitating the journalist), creating a video, PowerPoint or make a poster of the journalist’s life, a photo album, a smore, or something else! The main idea: Be creative as well as informative. -
