Cooper, Anderson (b. 1967) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Anderson Cooper. Entry Copyright © 2012 glbtq, Inc. Photograph by Flickr Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com user minds-eye. CC-BY- SA 2.0. Award-winning television journalist Anderson Cooper has traveled the globe, reporting from war zones and scenes of natural and man-made disasters, as well as covering stories on political and social issues. Cooper is a ubiquitous presence on American television, for in addition to being a news anchor, he also hosts a talk show. Cooper is the son of heiress and designer Gloria Vanderbilt and her fourth husband, Wyatt Cooper. In his memoir, Dispatches from the Edge (2006), Cooper stated that his parents' "backgrounds could not have been more different." Whereas his mother descends from one of American best-known and wealthiest families, his father was born into a poor farm family in the small town of Quitman, Mississippi. When he was sixteen he moved to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans with his mother and five of his seven siblings. Anderson Cooper wrote that his "father fell in love with New Orleans from the start" and delighted in its culture. After graduating from Francis T. Nicholls High School, however, Wyatt Cooper headed to California to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Although he found work on both screen and stage, he eventually turned to screenwriting for Twentieth Century Fox. Wyatt Cooper and Vanderbilt married in 1964 and took up residence in a luxurious mansion in New York City. The couple had two sons, Carter, born in 1965, and Anderson, born on June 3, 1967.

Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? For More Information Contact: Tom Rosenstiel, Director, Project for Excellence in Journalism Amy Mitchell, Associate Director Matt Carlson, Wally Dean, Dante Chinni, Atiba Pertilla, Research Nancy Anderson, Tom Avila, Staff Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested we are getting only “slices” of the war. Other observers have likened the media coverage to seeing the battlefield through “a soda straw.” The battle for Iraq is war as we’ve never it seen before. It is the first full-scale American military engagement in the age of the Internet, multiple cable channels and a mixed media culture that has stretched the definition of journalism. The most noted characteristic of the media coverage so far, however, is the new system of “embedding” some 600 journalists with American and British troops. What are Americans getting on television from this “embedded” reporting? How close to the action are the “embeds” getting? Who are they talking to? What are they talking about? To provide some framework for the discussion, the Project for Excellence in Journalism conducted a content analysis of the embedded reports on television during three of the first six days of the war. The Project is affiliated with Columbia University and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The embedded coverage, the research found, is largely anecdotal. It’s both exciting and dull, combat focused, and mostly live and unedited. Much of it lacks context but it is usually rich in detail. It has all the virtues and vices of reporting only what you can see.

  • Famous Journalist Research Project
Famous Journalist Research Project Name:____________________________ The Assignment: You will research a famous journalist and present to the class your findings. You will introduce the journalist, describe his/her major accomplishments, why he/she is famous, how he/she got his/her start in journalism, pertinent personal information, and be able answer any questions from the journalism class. You should make yourself an "expert" on this person. You should know more about the person than you actually present. You will need to gather your information from a wide variety of sources: Internet, TV, magazines, newspapers, etc. You must include a list of all sources you consult. For modern day journalists, you MUST read/watch something they have done. (ie. If you were presenting on Barbara Walters, then you must actually watch at least one interview/story she has done, or a portion of one, if an entire story isn't available. If you choose a writer, then you must read at least ONE article written by that person.) Source Ideas: Biography.com, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN or any news websites. NO WIKIPEDIA! The Presentation: You may be as creative as you wish to be. You may use note cards or you may memorize your presentation. You must have at least ONE visual!! Any visual must include information as well as be creative. Some possibilities include dressing as the character (if they have a distinctive way of dressing) & performing in first person (imitating the journalist), creating a video, PowerPoint or make a poster of the journalist’s life, a photo album, a smore, or something else! The main idea: Be creative as well as informative.

  • Posing the Literary As Visual
In the age of Postmodernist flux, where boundaries become blurred and may even disappear, we encounter an unexpected engagement with visual art by its long time nemesis - the phonographic word. In the work of the Danish poet Jan Hatt-Olsen who properly calls himself a cross media artist, we witness an uncanny morphogenesis of literary art into visual art. Typically the literary appears in visual art as appropriations of simple literary devices by visual artists, stimulated by the verbiage of their literate societies. For Mr. Olsen however, this repositioning of the literary into the current visual art world encounters several challenges, as he attempts to re-brand the space as a literary site. As the poet makes several appropriations of visual practices that stumble into the realm of visual art politics, there are a number of ideological viruses carried by the avant-garde into his project through these actions. In Mr. Olsen’s The Exhibition as a Poetry Book, at gallery Dada Post in Berlin, Germany in September 2011, the poet commandeered two rooms in which he created separate installations. Upon entering the galleries, experienced visual art eyes immediately synthesize the two layouts as text based conceptual art installations. The installation in the first room titled Came From the Sky exhibits the acuity and visual hermeneutics of a tightly controlled Dennis Oppenheim installation, while also bringing to mind other visual artists who work largely with text, such as Lawrence Weiner and Louise Lawler. In this action an antique red DDR toy airplane sits landed amid the (poems) acrylic on canvas leaflets it seems to have just strewed from the air before landing – like war propaganda.

SEYMOUR BOARDMAN “PERSONAL GEOMETRIES” A Selection 1940’s—2000’s Untitled, 1949, O/c, 32 1/2” x 49 1/2” Untitled, 2001, O/c, 42 1/2” x 52 1/2” samplePublished 2013 by the Anita Shapolsky Gallery Seymour (Sy) Boardman (1921–2005) After opening my gallery in Soho (99 Spring St) in 1982 and exhibiting mostly decorative art, I searched for quality artists. I saw Sy Boardman’s work at the David Anderson Gallery collection (son of Martha Jackson) on West 57th St. He was not in vogue, as was the case for most Abstract Artists at the time. Minimalism and Pop Art were the flavors of the day in the 80’s. Sy had no gallery affiliation and I felt that he was a painter to consider. He created paintings that are unique, while avoiding fashionable art trends. I think his art education in Europe (through the GI Bill) influenced him to use the grid as an understructure of his paintings for Untitled, 1949, O/c, 18” x 24” many years. I consider Sy the most intellectual of all the artists that I have ever exhibited. His paintings resonate like jazz, ever evolving, the transcendence of improvisation is constant. He never went along with the group of Abstract Expressionists that he exhibited with. He liked jagged, architectural phrases, and beginning a line without knowing where it would end. He went through many stages in developing his oeuvre. Sy was called a geometric colorist and an abstract illusionist who contributed to the psychology of perception with the use of only one hand (the other was disabled in the war).
