Der von großen Bauherren im behauenen Zustand verwendete Stein, davon zeugen zahlreiche Bauwerke, wird am Nordhang des Tals der Warchenne am Carrière de la Warchenne - Waimes - Warchenne Carrière de la nordöstlichen Ausläufer des Malmedyer Grabens gebrochen. Der seit Ende de 19. Jahrhunderts genutzte Warchenne-Steinbruch besteht aus Steinbänken von einem derartigen Ausmaß, dass er mehrere Jahrhunderte lang genutzt werden könnte. Das in Weismes gebrochene Gestein ist eine Sandsteinart, allgemein Arkose genannt, mit einem besonders reichen Farbenspiel. Der Bruchstein von Weismes wird von den besten Maurerhandwerkern verarbeitet. Die Persönlichkeit ihres Stils und die Art des verwendeten Geräts verleihen einem jeden Bauwerk Einmaligkeit und eigene Signatur. Der Bruchstein von Weismes passt hervorragend zu allen Baustilen von rustikal bis modern, wenn die Eigenschaften des Materials aufs beste genutzt werden. En ik heb de wielersport op de voet gevolgd, meer bepaald in de Oostkantons. De technische ont- wikkeling ging razendsnel vooruit: Het begon met een fietsje met terugtraprem, gevolgd door een fiets met drie versnellingen. Maar toen ik in het middelbaar zat kreeg ik mijn eerste koersfiets met 10 versnellingen. Dat betekende voor mij de absolute vrijheid: het hele zuidelijke gedeelte van de Oostkantons werd plots bereikbaar. Toen kwamen de mountainbikes op en de techniek bleef maar beter wor- den. Ik leerde een heel nieuwe manier van fietsen kennen en kon nauwelijks de volgende stap in de evolutie afwachten. Tegenwoordig De groene wegen vind je de toen ingezette ontwikkeling van de mountainbike en de moderne wegfiets terug in elke fiets. Geweldig! RAVeL 4 Deze evolutie beïnvloedde ook het fietstoerisme. De laatste 15 jaar werd er in de Oostkantons hard gewerkt en geïnvesteerd om aan de behoeften van de fietser van vandaag te voldoen: RAVeL, VeloTour, In de Oostkantons is het echt geweldig fietsen op Vennbahn, verhuur van E-bikes, MTB-netwerk… Het resultaat mag de RAVeL-routes en zeker op de Vennbahn. Geen gezien zijn en hoeft de vergelijking met populaire fietsbestemmin- enkel voertuig op de weg en adembenemende na- gen niet te schuwen. EAST TEXAS HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION 13 MY WAR: 1944-1945 By Max S. Late The upcoming fiftieth anniversary of the "terrible winter'~ of 1944-1945 in Europe has resurrected a host of memories. The proximate reason for this was a decision to transcribe 213 letters I had written to my late wife~ Georgiana Aspley Lale, spanning my arrival on the continent in September 1944 and my departure through the port of Marseilles fourteen months later, In between, I had seen something of England, France, Belgium, and Germany and had fought in the Battle of the Bulge, at the crossing of the Roer River, at the Remagcn Bridge, at the Ruhr Pocket, and in the Bavarian Pursuit. These letters repOlt to my wife on the climactic months of a military career which began in the ROTC unit at the University of Oklahoma in 1934. Starting with horse-drawn French 75mm guns left over from World War L it ended as I worked for Thiokol, a firm located near Marshall, which produced missile motors for the Army's Sergeant and Pershing weapons systems, a near­ incredible leap in weaponry for one lifetime.
