Klondike: 463-5893 | Mobile: 429-0169 5 Director’s Notes “Once upon a time . . .” is a familiar start to many fairy tales and helps us anticipate a good story. Most of us love stories, whether they are fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales, cautionary tales, myths, short stories, love stories, or scary stories. Think of your favorites, the ones you identify or empathize with, the stories that really resonate. As you consider your favorites, you may be thinking about stories you have read or heard, stories you retell because you believe others also will enjoy them. Many of you know I am a storyteller (some refer to me as “accomplished”), and I thoroughly enjoy telling stories to audiences of all ages. My approach is in the true oral TCPL Friends Sales tradition, similar to the griots of West Africa. I use very few props, mostly relying on Friday – Monday voice tone, volume, and pitch to convey the story. March 4, 5, 6, 7 Many people probably don’t think of themselves as storytellers in the way I describe. June 3, 4, 5, 6 However, I believe everyone has at least one great story. Life is full of personal and To find out more go to professional experiences that are the basis of good stories. I am convinced many of your www.tcpl.lib.in.us. stories would resonate with others. TCPL has embarked on a special endeavor to capture the Board of Trustees unwritten personal stories of your lives. Meetings This new service is a part of a national activity called, Tuesdays: March 1 & April 5 “StoryCorps @ your library.” Just like StoryCorps on Monday: May 2 National Public Radio, TCPL actually wants to record your personal story. In doing so, 7:30 p.m. | Downtown the library can record the historic, unique moments, and personal reflections of local individuals and families. Logistically, we have all the equipment, staff, training, and quiet spaces you need. All we need is you. This is your “once upon a time.” It is a wonderful and satisfying opportunity to share key moments and memories of your life. Once these key memories are digitally recorded, they can be enjoyed by future generations because each participant receives a digital copy of the recording. Imagine your great grandkids hearing about the adventures of your life in your own voice. Imagine others, people who also remember some of the same things and events you remember, listening to your stories. Your story will resonate with folks just like the favorite stories we have read or listened to. TCPL Mobile Library Often, I am tempted to tell my story in formal speeches. However, because I am usually Schedules: not invited there to talk about me, I refrain from doing so. But what if I did tell? What would be the story of Jos N. Holman? My Texas boyhood? My Rhode Island experience? Print copies at all libraries. The raising of five kids? Being the 1st African American director of two Indiana public Questions? Call 429-0169 or libraries? That is what National Library Week at “StoryCorps @ your library” does. StoryCorps enables listeners to know and share the Jenks Rest | Columbian unique things that make us who we are. It lets you tell your story in your own words and Park | Wednesday, April 13 helps make your story come alive, to be understood by future generations. You never 8:30 a.m. know, it may become the story someone comes to adore. It may not start with “once IU Arnett Health & Safety upon a time”, but it will reflect the times of your life. And it will be about as permanent Fair | Saturday, May 21 as it gets, like this 75th column. It also started with “once upon a time.” 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
