(LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE) UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS. Abstract approved , (Major Professor) The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of controlled environmental factors upon the development of the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) and to utilize the information for im- proving mass rearing procedures. A standard and a green form of the bud - worm occurring in the Pacific Northwest were compared morphologically and as to their suitability for mass rearing. " An exploratory study demonstrated that both forms of the budworm could be reared in quantity in the laboratory under conditions outlined by Stehr, but that greater survival and efficiency of production would be needed for mass rearing purposes. Further experimentation revealed that, by manipulating environmental factors during the rearing process, the number of budworm generations could be increased from one that occurs normally to nearly three per year. For the standard form of the budworm, procedures were developed for in- creasing laboratory stock twelvefold per generation. Productivity of the green form was much less, indicating that the standard form may be better suited for laboratory rearing in quantity. Recommended rearing procedures consist of the following steps. Egg masses should be incubated at temperatures between 70 and 75 °F and a relative humidity near 77 percent. Under these conditions, embryo matur- ation and hibernacula site selection require approximately 8 to 9 days. The larvae should be left at incubation conditions for no longer than three weeks. -

We report records of 25 species of aphids collected from four species of woody plants (Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula pubescens and B. pendula)at50 study sites in Northern Europe, located from 59° to 70° N and from 10° to 60° E. Critical evaluation of earlier publications demonstrated that in spite of the obvi- ous limitations of our survey, the obtained information substantially contributed to the knowledge of the distribution of aphids in North European Russia, includ- ing Murmansk oblast (103 species recorded to date), Republic of Karelia (58 spe- cies), Arkhangelsk oblast (37 species), Vologda oblast (17 species) and Republic of Komi (29 species). We confirm the occurrence of Cinara nigritergi in South- ern Karelia; Pineus cembrae, Cinara pilosa and Monaphis antennata are for the first time recorded in Norway. A. Coniferous forests of Pakistan are rich in mycodiversity and Suillus species are found as early appearing fungi in the vicinity of conifers. This study reports the diversity of Suillus collected during a period of three (3) years (2008-2011). From 32 basidiomata of Suillus collected, 12 species of this genus were identified. The isolation, genetic characterisation and biological activity of a South African Phthorimaea operculella granulovirus (PhopGV-SA) for the control of the Potato Tuber Moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE At RHODES UNIVERSITY By MICHAEL DAVID JUKES February 2015 i Abstract The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is a major pest of potato crops worldwide causing significant damage to both field and stored tubers. The current control method in South Africa involves chemical insecticides, however, there is growing concern on the health and environmental risks of their use. The development of novel biopesticide based control methods may offer a potential solution for the future of insecticides. In this study a baculovirus was successfully isolated from a laboratory population of P. operculella. Transmission electron micrographs revealed granulovirus-like particles. DNA was extracted from recovered occlusion bodies and used for the PCR amplification of the lef-8, lef- 9, granulin and egt genes. Sequence data was obtained and submitted to BLAST identifying the virus as a South African isolate of Phthorimaea operculella granulovirus (PhopGV-SA). Phylogenetic analysis of the lef-8, lef-9 and granulin amino acid sequences grouped the South African isolate with PhopGV-1346. Comparison of egt sequence data identified PhopGV-SA as a type II egt gene. A phylogenetic analysis of egt amino acid sequences grouped all type II genes, including PhopGV-SA, into a separate clade from types I, III, IV and V. These findings suggest that type II may represent the prototype structure for this gene with the evolution of types I, III and IV a result of large internal deletion events and subsequent divergence. -

We report here the results of an inventory of basidiomycetes, which was undertaken in the region of Nafpactia Mts., central Greece. The investigated area, with woods dominated by C. sativa, was examined for the first time in respect to its mycodiversity. One hundred and four species belonging in 54 genera were recorded. Fifteen species (Conocybe pseudocrispa, Entoloma nitens, Lactarius glaucescens, Lichenomphalia velutina, Parasola schroeteri, Pholiotina coprophila, Russula alutacea, R. azurea, R. pseudoaeruginea, R. pungens, R. vitellina, Sarcodon glaucopus, Tomentella badia, T. fibrosa and Tubulicrinis sororius) are reported for the first time from Greece. In addition, 33 species constitute new habitats/hosts/substrates records. Abstract: Mycomedicine is a unique class of natural medicine that has been widely used in Asian countries for thousands of years. Modern mycomedicine consists of fruiting bodies, spores, or other tissues of medicinal fungi, as well as bioactive components extracted from them, including polysaccha- rides and, triterpenoids, etc. Since the discovery of the famous fungal extract, penicillin, by Alexander Fleming in the late 19th century, researchers have realised the significant antibiotic and other medic- inal values of fungal extracts. As medicinal fungi and fungal metabolites can induce apoptosis or autophagy, enhance the immune response, and reduce metastatic potential, several types of mush- rooms, such as Ganoderma lucidum and Grifola frondosa, have been extensively investigated, and anti- cancer drugs have been developed from their extracts. Although some studies have highlighted the anti-cancer properties of a single, specific mushroom, only limited reviews have summarised diverse medicinal fungi as mycomedicine. A taxonomic survey of Central European genera of the families Boletaceae and Suillaceae with tubular hymenophores, including the lamellate Phylloporus, is presented. Questions concerning the delimitation of the bolete genera are discussed. Descriptions and keys to the families and genera are based predominantly on anatomical characters of the carpophores. Attention is also paid to peripheral layers of stipe tissue, whose anatomical structure has not been sufficiently studied. The study of these layers, above all of the caulohymenium and the lateral stipe stratum, can provide information important for a better understanding of relationships between taxonomic groups in these families. The presence (or absence) of the caulohymenium with spore-bearing caulobasidia on the stipe surface is here considered as a significant ge neric character of boletes. A new combination, Pseudoboletus astraeicola (Imazeki) Šutara, is proposed. Key words: Boletaceae, Suillaceae, generic taxonomy, anatomical characters. Šutara J. Extensive macro- and microscopical descriptions and illustrations of the main anatomical features are provided. Similarities Arcangeliella with other sequestrate Russulales and their phylogenetic relationships are discussed. The placement of the species gasteroid fungi within Lactarius and its subgenera is confirmed by a molecular phylogeny based on ITS, LSU and rpb2 markers. hypogeous fungi A species key of the new taxa, including five other known angiocarpous species from South East Asia reported to Lactarius exude milk, is given. The diversity of angiocarpous fungi in tropical areas is considered underestimated and driving Martellia evolutionary forces towards gasteromycetization are probably more diverse than generally assumed. The discovery morphology of a large diversity of angiocarpous milkcaps on a rather local tropical scale was unexpected, and especially the phylogeny fact that in Sri Lanka more angiocarpous than agaricoid Lactarius species are known now.
