Bill Stenger, the former president of Jay Peak Resort, is no longer a defendant in the civil lawsuit filed by the federal Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against him and the owner of the resort, Ariel Quiros. Mr. Stenger is also no longer employed by Jay Peak.

Mr. Stenger reached an agreement with SEC lawyers under which he will be liable for whatever penalties U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles might impose for securities fraud. Indeed, he could make his statement while relieving himself, perhaps doubling his pleasure. The photo attached shows a portable outhouse placed adjacent to the flag and flagpole in Derby Line’s Baxter Park. While one can appreciate the availability of facilities at the park, one can also question the symbolism of siting the portable toilet adjacent to the U.S. flag flying over the park. While perhaps I am overly sensitive to the message conveyed by an outhouse placed next to the flagpole, what is worse is that this is the town of Derby’s memorial to veterans…. I am a veteran (Vietnam, 101st Airborne Division) and I find the placement of an outhouse adjacent to a

After enormous pushback from other towns in the region, wind developers are employing a new strategy. Targeting individual farm owners and approaching them with their pie in the sky promises of wealth and trying to convince them that big wind will save their farms in this time of declining milk prices. Holland is a small town with limited resources to fight the financial and political power that is behind these developers. One wonders how many towns need to be targeted by these predators before the obvious becomes apparent. These developers will keep pushing their agenda until they find a hole in the dyke. Holland is surrounded by towns that have overwhelmingly rejected industrial wind: Morgan, Brighton, Newark, Derby, Irasburg, etc. Now Holland is in the crosshairs. Many say, “It is just one tower.” But the reality is that if one tower is permitted, the precedent is set. Other farmers in Holland are waiting in the wings to build their “one tower.” If the PSB (Public Service Board) approves this horrible defacing of our town, other Wind turbines are notoriously inefficient…. The addition, christened Crooked Window Cottage, is available as a rental when family or friends aren’t using it. It was a foregone conclusion that Ms. Tooker and Mr. Mutter would end up living in Vermont, even before Sandy destroyed the Jersey shore area where the two had lived all their lives. Mr. Mutter’s three children are grown and spread out across the country. Ms. Tooker’s son Caleb Fisher stayed on in Vermont after graduating from Sterling College in Craftsbury, and now owns a 200-acre sustainable vegetable farm in Walden that he farms with his partner, Jennifer Jones. Then, too, the couple knew that if they saved the house, they’d be fixing it up to sell sometime in the next few years. Mrs. Johnson was approaching 90 and would probably not want to stay in a big house much longer. And Ms. Tooker planned to retire to Vermont to be near her son. “If I’d had a young family, it might have been different,” she said. “But we knew the timeline was going to be short.” The house had been built straddling two lots. SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Field Day, held Monday, put an exclamation point on a gorgeous summer in the Northeast Kingdom. This year marked the welcome return of pony pulling to the Labor Day event. With a slate of local competitors in an intimate setting, the pull offers a glimpse into a world of fierce, friendly competition. The same camaraderie may well exist at the Barton fair, but the scale of that event makes it harder to discern. The ninth edition of the Pat O’Hagan Memorial Fiddler’s Contest featured a strong collection of adult fiddlers, but suffered a sad lack of youthful players. One of the adults drove up from his home in Massachusetts to compete. Terry O’Hagan, one of the sons of the festival’s namesake, said he played in his youth, gave it up for a time and started back up as an adult. His mother urged him to compete in the contest, he said. Mrs. O’Hagan was killed shortly after the 2010 field day by burglars who mistakenly believed she had the money earned from the event at her home. Mr. O’Hagan’s performance of “Leaving Collin Tousignant, 6, and his brother Evan, 3, seem skeptical about the vegetable creatures on display at the Lismore,” “Tobin’s Favorite,” and “Masons Sheffield Field Day Monday. Jay Peak’s water park has to sign a waiver for whiplash claims. Monica’s uncle Mike “Pappy” Pappalardo started a local team for flowboarders, dubbed the Flow Dogs, about four years ago, Monica said. Mr. Pappalardo is both an enthusiastic flowboarder and an enthusiastic recruiter. Everywhere he goes he signs up new members and encourages people to start local Flow Dog groups. Flow Dogs now has about 418 members worldwide. There are Flow Dogs in Japan, Singapore, and Dubai, among other places. So four years ago, when Monica was ten, she decided to give flowboarding a try. It wasn’t that much of a stretch for the wiry, athletic girl who lives in the shadow of Jay Peak. From the time she was in third grade, Monica had been riding a bus provided by the Jay- Westfield Elementary School up to the ski resort every other Wednesday to snowboard. “I was already a good snowboarder,” she said. “So I caught on really fast.” Becoming a national champion takes both skill and persistence.
