Quero ainda expressar a minha enorme gratidão à minha Orientadora, Professora Doutora Graça Índias Cordeiro que se dispôs a me acompanhar colocando-me no bom caminho, dando-me suas melhores sugestões e orientações. Palavras-chave – Grupos Juvenis, identidade, skate, skaters, tribos urbanas V OS FILHOS DO BETÃO Abstract This study proposes to investigate the contribution of skateboarding practice in the construction of identity in youth subcultures in the urban space. A historical overview of the practice of skateboarding in Portugal and around the world is made. Based on concepts such as identity (Giddens, 1997), subculture (Becker, 1991) and urban tribes (Maffesoli, 1998), the practice of skateboarding in urban contexts is contextualized, and to a profile of the skaters is drawn. To achieve these objectives, the methodology used triangulated several techniques, including document analysis, observation, interviews and life stories. Results indicate that the practice of skateboarding is a result of appropriation of urban spaces and the use of its architectural features; that appropriation is sometimes a source of social conflict. Most skaters in Portugal are young males who live in urban areas and belong to advantaged socio-economic groups. In terms of identity, the skaters are defined not only by the practice of a sport, but with specific aspects, such as behavior, language, attitudes and dynamics of interaction itself. The implications for youth studies and intervention will be discussed. Key words – Youth Groups, identity, skate, skaters, urban tribes VI OS FILHOS DO BETÃO Índice 1.

They were all white women, punkers in leath- er jackets and ripped jeans who exuded the ultimate in cool. I thought of my brother as a rock star in his ability to attract so many edgy, beautiful women in a racial category that I knew at the age of nine was out of our family’s league. As unique as I thought my brother’s power of attraction to be, I learned later that numerous Asian stars rocked the stage in my brother’s world of skateboarding. A community of intoxicatingly rebellious Asian and Pacific Islander men thrived during the 1970s and 1980s within a skater world almost always characterized as white, if not blatantly racist. These men’s positioning becomes particularly notable during an era documented as a time of crippling emas- culation for Asian American men.

The thesis is divided into two parts – a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the definition of a subculture, its features and functions. This part further describes American society in the fifties which provided preconditions for the emergence of new subcultures. The practical part analyzes the origin and development of skateboarding subculture which was influenced by changes in American mass culture. The end of the practical part includes an interconnection between the values of American society and skateboarders. Anotace Tato práce analyzuje vznik a vývoj skateboardové subkultury, která vznikla v padesátých letech v Kalifornii. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí – teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část představuje pojem subkultura, její rysy a funkce.

[laughter] Uh well I grew up in the ’80s, so I grew up listening to punk rock and new wave, so the current version of that would be called alternative rock, but I also grew up loving hip hop and rap, so I still listen to that too, not as much though. 00:47 Matt Anderson Do you have a favorite movie? 00:50 Ken Block Another tough one, jeez! Uh, it used to be Blazing Saddles, but that isn’t as PC anymore. So uh, I don’t know. Something odd I guess comes to mind something like Fight Club. Yeah something like that.
