August 2020 From Archival Silence to Screaming Queens: Reconstructing the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot By Isaac Fellman & Susan Stryker On an August evening in 1966, three years before the Stonewall riots in New York City, the patrons of the Compton’s Cafeteria on Taylor and Turk Streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district fought back against police harassment. Little documentary evidence survives of this key moment in transgender history. The photograph above from the GLBT Historical Society’s archives is an extremely rare still of the interior of the Compton’s location in question, and the exact date the riot occurred has never been determined. Our archives contain much of the documentation that does survive, which enabled historian and former GLBT Historical Society executive director Susan Stryker to research the event in the early 2000s. Together with Victor Silverman, Stryker produced the Emmy Award-winning 2005 documentary Screaming Queens, which succeeded in bringing the riot to greater public awareness. Our special program on August 5 features a screening of Screaming Queens and a conversation with Stryker. Reference archivist Isaac Fellman, who has been working extensively with our transgender-related collections, interviewed Stryker about how she uncovered the legacy of Compton’s. The story of Compton’s exposes gaps in archives; it exists in memory, but official sources, records and contemporary news reporting are scarce. Did this scarcity influence your process and philosophy as a historian? The scarcity of traditional primary-document sources really did require me to embrace creative and nontraditional research methodologies. One of the most important strategies was simply walking in the neighborhood, studying San Francisco’s urban history, using the GLBT Historical Society’s sites database to map historic trans-serving bars and SROs, and reading a lot of spatial and architectural theory. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com One of the earliest American gay movement (or homophile) organizations, the Mattachine Society began in Los Angeles in the winter of 1950. It was formed by Harry Hay, a leading gay activist and former Communist Party member, along with seven other gay men. The name refers to the Société Mattachine, a French medieval masque group that allegedly traveled from village to village, using ballads and dramas to point out social injustice. The name was meant to symbolize the fact that "gays were a masked people, unknown and anonymous." By sharing their personal experiences as gay men and analyzing homosexuals in the context of an oppressed cultural minority, the Mattachine founders attempted to redefine the meaning of being gay in the United States. They devised a comprehensive program for cultural and political liberation. In 1951, the Mattachine Society adopted a Statement of Missions and Purpose. This Statement stands out in the history of the gay liberation movement because it identified and incorporated two important themes. First, Mattachine called for a grassroots movement of gay people to challenge anti-gay discrimination; and second, the organization recognized the importance of building a gay community. The Mattachine Society also began sponsoring discussion groups in 1951, providing lesbians and gay men an opportunity to share openly, often for the first time, their feelings and experiences. The meetings were frequently emotional and cathartic. Over the next few years attendance at Mattachine meetings increased tremendously. Soon discussion groups were meeting throughout the United States. -

LGBT individuals today can live Without fear of arrest, harassment, or exposure for being Who they are. Mid-twentieth century America did not provide a safe place for LGBT individuals to be themselves. Exposure for being a member of the LGBT community Would lead to life changing events for individuals. The LGBT community feared arrest, and the police. Individuals could be arrested at a private gathering or party, in a gay bar, or soliciting sex in any location (including private homes).2 If an individual Was arrested on a “morals charge” their life changed. The “morals charge” is hoW the police department could quickly and easily arrest anyone they suspected of being homosexual. LGBT individuals faced social stigma, incarceration, commitment to mental institutions, losing jobs, and being ousted by family and friends. 3 Because of the vast consequences LGBT individuals faced if their identity Was ever exposed, the need to keep their identity a secret Was important. -

1 Teaching LGBTQ History and Heritage Leila J. Rupp LGBTQ Heritage Initiative: Theme Study Chapter Imagine a world in which students could visit not just Civil War battlefields that raise the profound issues of slavery and what it means for states to be united, but also buildings that housed places that came to feel like home to people marginalized because of sexuality and gender, places that were important enough to defend against onslaughts by the police. That is the possibility that teaching the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) past through historic sites offers. The houses where famous and less known lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people lived, the commercial establishments they patronized and defended, and even places that mark a history of discrimination and violence offer the opportunity to make LGBTQ history a part of US history in a way that makes a difference for students, wherever they are learning history. A more inclusive history certainly matters to LGBTQ students, who suffer not just from bullying and other forms of discrimination but also from being deprived of a past. Many years ago, I was teaching an introductory US history course when I ran into a student from the class who was working in the local gay restaurant. He told me that he had never heard of Stonewall until I talked about it in a lecture on social movement of the 1960s. He was so excited to hear a mention of the gay past in a history class that he told his roommate about it. He also came out, since they had never discussed their sexual identities, and then the roommate came out to him. -

Making Sense of the Anti-Same-Sex-Marriage Movement in France Scott Gunther [“Making Sense of the Anti-same-sex-marriage Movement in France,” French Politics, Culture and Society, summer 2019, Volume 37, Issue 2] Abstract This article examines the political style and rhetoric of the Manif pour tous (MPT), the main organization opposing same-sex marriage in France, from summer 2013 to the present. It exposes how the MPT's style and rhetoric differ from those of their American counterparts, and what this tells us about the different strategies of political movements in France and the United States generally. It is based on an analysis of the language used by activists whom I interviewed in 2014 and 2015 and on a discourse analysis of the MPT’s website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, and press releases since 2013.
