October 2012 Special Health Alert: Deadly Meningitis Outbreak Among Gay HIV+ Men in NYC Get the vaccine and protect yourself! Who should get vaccinated? If you are an HIV+ man and you have had intimate contact* with a man you met on the internet, through a social app, at a party, or at a bar since September 1, 2012, you should get the meningitis vaccine. *intimate contact includes sex, kissing, sharing eating utensils, sharing drinking glasses, or other contact between your mouth and another man’s saliva. Will my insurance cover vaccine? If you have Medicaid or Medicaid/Medicare, we will supply your vaccine. If you have ADAP, you will be able to get the vaccine at our pharmacy with a prescription that will be provided to you at your appointment. If you have private insurance, be aware that many private insurance plans do not cover this vaccine. Your provider will prescribe the vaccine and if your insurance doesn’t cover it, you can buy it at our pharmacy ($100-120 per dose). You can also go to one of the free vaccination sites listed on the back of this page. How do I get the vaccine? If you get your HIV care at Callen-Lorde, call us at 212-271- 7200 today and speak with a member of our staff to make an appointment for vaccination. If you get your HIV care somewhere else, call your primary care provider or go to one of the free vaccination sites listed on the back of this page. Know the Symptoms: High fever, Headache, Stiff neck, Rash. If you have those symptoms immediately call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room. Meningitis is a medical emergency. Si tu eres un hombre VIH+ y has tenido contacto intimo* con algun hombre que conociste en el Internet, alguna aplicación de telefono, en una fiesta, o en un bar desde Septiembre 1ro, 2012, tu deberias vacunarte contra la meningitis. *Contacto intimo incluye sexo, besar, compartir utensilios para comer, compartir bebidas en un mismo vaso, u otro tipo de contacto entre tu boca y la saliva de otro hombre. ¿La vacuna sera cubierta por mi seguro medico? Si tienes Medicaid o Medicaid/Medicare, nosotros podemos proveerte la vacuna. Si tienes ADAP, podras obtener la vacuna en nuestra farmacia con una receta que se te proveera durante tu cita medica. Si usted tiene seguro medico privado, tenga presente que muchos planes medicos privados no tienen cobertura para esta vacuna.
