Piratas Y Aventureros En Las Costas De Nicaragua, Jaime Incer Barquero
COMENTARIO A LAS CRÓNICAS DE JOHN ESQUEMELING John Esquemeling, cuyo verdadero nombre era Alexander Olivier Oexmelin, publicó en Amsterdam, en 1678, su famoso libro De Americaeneche Zee Roovers, "Los Bucaneros de América," obra que tuvo tal que fue de inmediato traducida al inglés y luego a otros idiomas. En ella dio a conocer las aventuras de algunos piratas que desde mediados del siglo mi merodeaban por las aguas del Caribe, contándose entre ellos el mismo autor, quien participó en 1671 como médico-barbero en la expedición de asalto a la dudad de Panamá, capitaneada por el célebre corsario inglés Henry Morgan. Después de la hazaña, Morgan y sus compinches de mayor confianza se alzaron con casi todo el botín, dejando abandonado y desamparado al grupo de Esquemeling, en la boca del río de Chagres, donde los piratas habían andado los barcos antes de cruzar el istmo con rumbo a Panamá. Por un tiempo Esquemeling y su gente recorrieron la costa pana- meña, en las inmediaciones de Bocas del Toro, en busca de alimentos y de otras provisiones; luego continuaron rumbo ala laguna de Blue- fields con el objeto carenar los barcos, en vista que el lugar también ofrecía buen resguardo a la flotilla corsaria (cróNica III). Estando en este lugar los piratas fueron ahuyentados por un grupo de indios—posiblemente Kukras—que mataron a flechazos a dos mujeres cautivas, enviadas a un río cercano para lavar la ropa de los bucaneros. Los piratas no lograron coger a los sospechosos, por haber éstos escapado rápidamente a la espesura de la selva. -

Para ello también analizaremos cómo funcionan los rasgos genéricos de ambas vertientes en dos películas prototípicas de aquellas épocas, Víctimas del pecado (Emilio Fernández, 1951) y Bellas de noche (Las ficheras)(Miguel M. Delgado, 1975), realizadas bajo la égida de la familia de productores Calderón. De ese modo, evidenciaremos que más allá de las distancias existentes entre ambas clases de films existe un eje que atraviesa la historia del cine mexicano en pos de la descripción de los espacios escabrosos del arrabal y el cabaret, en donde la estigmati- zación aleccionadora va cediendo lugar progresivamente a una mirada más naturalizada y superficial sobre los tópicos en ellas desplegados. ABSTRACT In this article, we will establish a comparative study of the figures of the rumberas and ficheras in the context of the films starred by them, in order to observe the differences and continuities they offered to Mexican cinema through dec-ades. -

ANAGRAMAS - UNIVERSIDAD DE MEDELLIN “The Only Defense is Excess: Translating and Surpassing Hollywood’s Conventions to Establish a Relevant Mexican Cinema”* Paula Barreiro Posada** Recibido: 27 de enero de 2011 Aprobado: 4 de marzo de 2011 Abstract Mexico is one of the countries which has adapted American cinematographic genres with success and productivity. This country has seen in Hollywood an effective structure for approaching the audience. With the purpose of approaching national and international audiences, Meximo has not only adopted some of Hollywood cinematographic genres, but it has also combined them with Mexican genres such as “Cabaretera” in order to reflect its social context and national identity. The Melodrama and the Film Noir were two of the Hollywood genres which exercised a stronger influence on the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Influence of these genres is specifically evident in style and narrative of the film Aventurera (1949). This film shows the links between Hollywood and Mexican cinema, displaying how some Hollywood conventions were translated and reformed in order to create its own Mexican Cinema. Most countries intending to create their own cinema have to face Hollywood influence. This industry has always been seen as a leading industry in technology, innovation, and economic capacity, and as the Nemesis of local cinema. This case study on Aventurera shows that Mexican cinema reached progress until exceeding conventions of cinematographic genres taken from Hollywood, creating stories which went beyond the local interest. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s. -

El autor pone especial énfasis en la elaboración de los textiles, su contenido simbólico y las funciones que cumplen en el contexto social y ritual, y relaciona los testimonios de tejedoras y gente mayor de la región con los resultados de otros estudios sobre textiles andinos. Nazi Party Membership in Canada: A Profile by Jonathan WAGNER* During the Depression a National Socialist movement with two rel atively distinct components developed within Canada's German com munity. A pro-Nazi society, the Deutscher Bund Canada (DBC =German Association of Canada), was established for the so-called V olksdeutsche (Germans who had been born outside the Reich). The Bund held monthly meetings for its members and staged pro-Nazi celebrations such as Hitler birthday parties; it imported and distributed Nazi propaganda materials to Germans and non-Germans alike ; it joined with other indigenous German Canadian organizations and clubs to organize social events and to establish German language schools. The second arm of the Canadian Nazi move ment was a separate Nazi party organization (NSDAP). This group was composed of non-naturalized German Canadians and Reichsdeutsche (Germans born in Germany proper) residing in Canada who had applied for and been accepted into the National Socialist Party. Although frequent contact existed between the NSDAP units and the Bund (the two groups often combined to hold public displays and to promote common causes), efforts were made to keep the memberships separate. Up to the present time little serious effort has been made to deal with the Canadian Nazi movement in general and nothing has been pub lished specifically describing the National Socialist Party here. 1 Part of the reason for this neglect relates to the problem of sources. Most often those Canadian historians who have dabbled in Nazism have stopped their investigations upon exhausting the limited Canadian (mostly English) sources. They have failed to look outside the country to European sources for additional information.
