They are items for which it is always difficult to outline a credible prospect of reuse, their old raison d'être- namely the military, political and economic purposes for which they were built- having been lost. In recent years a Research Unit of the University of Bologna composed of architects from different disciplines has conducted a series of studies on fortified heritage in the Emilia Romagna region (and not only) often characterized by buildings in ruins. The purpose of this study is mainly to document a legacy, which has already been studied in depth by historians, and previously lacked reliable architectural surveys for the definition of a credible as well as sustainable conservation project. Our contribution will focus on different techniques and methods used for the survey of these architectures, the characteristics of which- in the past- have made an effective survey of these buildings difficult, if not impossible. The survey of a ruin requires, much more than the evaluation of an intact building, reading skills and an interpretation of architectural spaces to better manage the stages of documentation and data processing. -

Atkins Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music ii ©Copyright 2017 Michiko Urita iii University of Washington Abstract In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine in Modern and Pre-modern Japan Michiko Urita Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Patricia Shehan Campbell Music This dissertation explores the essence and resilience of the most sacred and secret ritual music of the Japanese imperial court—kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku—by examining ways in which these two songs have survived since their formation in the twelfth century. Kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku together are the jewel of Shinto ceremonial vocal music of gagaku, the imperial court music and dances. Kagura secret songs are the emperor’s foremost prayer offering to the imperial ancestral deity, Amaterasu, and other Shinto deities for the well-being of the people and Japan. I aim to provide an understanding of reasons for the continued and uninterrupted performance of kagura secret songs, despite two major crises within Japan’s history. While foreign origin style of gagaku was interrupted during the Warring States period (1467-1615), the performance and transmission of kagura secret songs were protected and sustained. In the face of the second crisis during the Meiji period (1868-1912), which was marked by a threat of foreign invasion and the re-organization of governance, most secret repertoire of gagaku lost their secrecy or were threatened by changes to their traditional system of transmissions, but kagura secret songs survived and were sustained without losing their iv secrecy, sacredness, and silent performance. -

Origins and Characteristics of the Japanese Collection in the British Library
ORIGINS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JAPANESE COLLECTION IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY YU-YING BROWN THE British Library's antiquarian Japanese collection has long been regarded as one of the finest outside Japan.^ Its quality and quantity are such that the descriptive catalogue^ compiled by my predecessor, the late Kenneth Gardner,^ had to be limited to pre-1700 printed books. Even then, it included 637 items of outstanding rarity.^ These range from the Hyakumanto daratii ^-^m^tmf^ (Empress Shotoku's 'One Million Pagoda Charms') of AD 764-70; to books printed in medieval Buddhist monasteries (imprints known as Kastiga-ban ^B^^ Jodokyo-ban &±^f&yKdya-ban ,^if-lfe, etc., from the names of their associated temples or sects); Chinese classical works printed in Japan (especially Gozan- ban ELUtife ); and the early movable-type editions (Kokatsuji-ban ^ffi^^tK), which include Saga-bon ^m'^ and those rarest of all Japanese books, volumes printed by the Jesuit Mission Press, the Kirishitan-ban ^ u •>? >W.. In the category of Kokatsuji-ban., the best yardstick with which to measure the comparative strength of fine antiquarian collections, the British Library has about 120, a holding comparable with those of such great Japanese libraries as Tenri Central Library in Nara, Daitokyu Memorial Library and the Toyo Bunko (Oriental Library) in Tokyo. The early date and rarity of much of the Japanese collection in the British Library owes a good deal to the acquisitions made by the British Museum, through purchase and gift, from four inspired collectors. They were Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716),^ a German physician and traveller who worked at Deshima, the Dutch East India Company's trading post in Nagasaki; Phihpp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), Kaempfer's compatriot and likewise a doctor at Deshima; Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929), a distinguished British diplomat and bibliophile; and William Anderson (1842-1900), a Scottish surgeon. -

Methods of siege warfare and siege defense before and after the advent of artillery are compared. Literary research conducted describes evolutionary changes made in the engineering design of fortifications. The Venetian influence in the design of Famagusta's defensive structures due to the progression of Fourteenth to Sixteenth century military warfare demonstrates the effect engineering technology has on society.
