Prof. Dr. Daniel Van Den Bulcke Institute of Development Policy and Management University of Antwerp i Preface While the establishment of economic zones at the beginning of China’s open door policy were careful attempts to open China’s door to the outside world and abandon its isolationist policy, the Chinese leadership today is undoubtedly very proud of these achievements. Twenty five years after the first four Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and twenty years after the development and construction of state- level economic and technological development zones, the China National Philatelic Corporation, which belongs to the Chinese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, issued a special stamp in 2004 to commemorate the establishment of the Economic and Technological Development Zones (ETDZ). An accompanying leaflet stated “This stamp was issued in commemoration of the glorious achievements of the state-level economic and technological zones in the past 20 years, highlighting the role and position of the construction of the development zones in China’s economic construction. Deng Xiaoping’s inscription is the main element in the design of the stamp, and abstract symbols are used to reflect the radiating and driving role of the development zones as windows and models.” This report attempts to describe and evaluate the policy of China to use economic zones as vanguards of development. It is based on desk research with a focus on the studies of clusters and a field trip to China in April 2004 with visits to a number of zones in Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing and Dalian and interviews with managers of the zones and some Belgian companies located in the zones. -

In this study we use a Nd isotope combination of bulk sediment geochemistry, Nd and Sr isotope geochemistry, and single grain zircon U-Pb Erosion dating to understand the source of sediment in the modern drainage. We also performed zircon U-Pb dating on Provenance Eocene sedimentary rocks sampled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 349 in order to Pearl River constrain the source of sediment to the rift before the Oligocene. -

Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This article deals with the use of social capital in organizing the Frog Festival in a Zhuang ethnic village in China amidst the expansion of cultural tourism. The data used were drawn from qualitative research in Baying Village, Donglan District, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China. Key informant interviews as well as participant and non-participant observations were the main data collection techniques employed in the field research. The study found that there are three forms of social capital-namely, networks, norms, and trust-employed in the organization of the Frog Festival, which has become a part of China’s cultural tourism development. Social capital in the form of networks includes bonding networks among relatives, bridging networks between Baying residents and Zhuang outside the village, and linking networks between Baying villagers and the state as well as agencies from outside. Of the three forms of network, bonding is the most important because it connects not only those who have genealogical relationships, but also Zhuang dwellers from nearby villages to actively take part in organizing the festival. The research also indicates key roles of the other two categories of social capital-norms and trust-used in the organization of the Frog Festival which have allowed for its success in Baying and generated strong social networks. -

The Ballad of Mulan Report and Poem
Wolfe !1 Brady Wolfe Dr. Christensen CHIN 343 December 8, 2015 Mulan China to me for many years was defined by the classic story of Mulan. It was a foreign land as far away from me as anything I could fathom, yet it was so fascinating to me that I would of- ten even pretend I could speak Chinese, and I still remember the excitement I felt when as a young child I first watched Disney’s retelling of Mulan. I watched it over and over again, and when I went to China for the first time, I was honestly quite surprised to find that today’s China was quite different from my childhood imaginations inspired by that movie. For this reason, when I discovered that the legend of Mulan originates from an ancient Chinese poem, I decided it would be appropriate and enjoyable for me to choose this poem as the subject of my translation and research project. The core of this project is my own translation of the classic poem, and addi- tionally I will discuss a little bit about the history of the poem, and analyze its structure and for- mat. The original source for the poem of Mulan has been lost, but it was transcribed into the Music Bureau Collections, an anthology by Guo Maoqing put together sometime during the Song dy- nasty around the 11th or 12th century A.D., and a note is given by Guo saying that the source from which it was taken and transcribed into the collection was a compilation made during the beginning of the Tang dynasty, more or less 6th century A.D., called the Musical Records of Old and New, (Project Gutenberg). -

LIST 3. HEADINGS THAT NEED TO BE CHANGED FROM THE MACHINE- CONVERTED FORM The data dictionary for the machine conversion of subject headings was prepared in summer 2000 based on the systematic romanization of Wade-Giles terms in existing subject headings identified as eligible for conversion before detailed examination of the headings could take place. When investigation of each heading was subsequently undertaken, it was discovered that some headings needed to be revised to forms that differed from the forms that had been given in the data dictionary. This occurred most frequently when older headings no longer conformed to current policy, or in the case of geographic headings, when conflicts were discovered using current geographic reference sources, for example, the listing of more than one river or mountain by the same name in China. Approximately 14% of the subject headings in the pinyin conversion project were revised differently than their machine- converted forms. To aid in bibliographic file maintenance, the following list of those headings is provided. In subject authority records for the revised headings, Used For references (4XX) coded Anne@ in the $w control subfield for earlier form of heading have been supplied for the data dictionary forms as well as the original forms of the headings. JSEALS was formally established by decision of the SEALS 17 meeting, held at the University of Maryland in September 2007. It supersedes the Conference Proceedings, previously published by Arizona State University and later by Pacific Linguistics. JSEALS welcomes articles that are topical, focused on linguistic (as opposed to cultural or anthropological) issues, and which further the lively debate that characterizes the annual SEALS conferences. Although we expect in practice that most JSEALS articles will have been presented and discussed at the SEALS conference, submission is open to all regardless of their participation in SEALS meetings. Papers are expected to be written in English. Each paper is reviewed by at least two scholars, usually a member of the Advisory Board and one or more independent readers. Following in Shenzhen’s footsteps, the wave of innovation has not only been set off in its neighbouring cities such as Guangzhou and Dongguan, but also in Huizhou, where the local government is putting effort in building Guangdong Silicon Valley. BACKGROUND Huizhou occupies a pivotal position in Shenzhen-Dongguan-Huizhou Economic Circle2 and lies in the core district of eastern Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (hereinafter “Greater Bay Area”). Since China’s reform and opening up, it has been acting as one of the major industrial cities in Pearl River Delta (hereinafter “PRD”) and has matured petrochemicals and electronic information industries as its pillar industries.
