The Holy See MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO PARTICIPANTS IN THE 14th GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF ITALIAN CATHOLIC ACTION Dear friends of Italian Catholic Action! You are meeting at your General Assembly with the theme: Live the faith, love life: Catholic Action’s educative commitment, in order to emphasize your love for Christ and the Church and renew the journey of your Association, with the commitment to assume fully your responsibilities as laymen and women in the service of the Gospel. You are children, young people and adults who make yourselves available to the Lord in the Church by a public, solemn commitment to give good witness in every area of life, in communion with your Pastors. Yours is a grass-roots presence in parishes, families, neighbourhoods, and social environments: a presence that you live in your everyday life and in your desire for holiness. Your children, adolescents and young people all want to be lively and happy, generous and courageous, like Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati. You enthusiastically build the city of all with dedication and courageously serve in the institutions, just as Vittorio Bachelet, Bl. Alberto Marvelli did, and Giuseppe Toniolo, who will soon be declared Blessed. In your project of human and Christian formation you desire to be faithful friends of Christ, like Bl. Pierina Morosini and Bl. Antonia Mesina, like Venerable Armida Barelli. You want to make our communities come alive with children who are charming because of the purity of their heart, like Antonietta Meo, and who are capable of drawing also parents to Jesus.

  • Blessed Pierina Morosini
Lives of Saints 1931 - 1957 Feastday: 6th April I was born in Fiobbio di Albino, Italy, in 1931. I was the eldest of eight children, and my family was poor. As a young girl, I was trained as a seamstress, and at the age of 15, I started to work in a textile factory. At the same time, I did what I could in the Parish. I helped with the Mass everyday and was active in the Female Youth Section of ‘Catholic Action’. In 1947, I participated in a pilgrimage to Rome for the beatification of Maria Goretti. I greatly admired Maria Goretti and I tried to imitate her in many ways. Like her, I lived the virtues in a simple way, and on a daily basis, at home and at work. Like her, I lived the same life of hard poverty and tried to show the same strength in bearing sacrifices. Like her I deplored sin. I lived a humble life, led by a profound faith in God and the Virgin Mary, I trusted in the teachings of the Church and I zealously worked for the Seminary where priests train, and for the missions. I did what I could, served as a catechist, helped the sick and I supported Catholic associations. I “May I never allow made a private vow of chastity to God, and considered myself even the religious life, but continued to live at home to help my smallest mother take care of the remaining children, since my father was unable to work. People got to know about my compromise with spiritual progress after my death, because I always kept a sin, whether in book in which I wrote down my resolutions and my dress, speech, inspirations.

  • We Are in Need of a Young Believing Church
We are in Need of a Young Believing Church IYCS Theological Reflection April 2018 Glancing through the list of saints of recent past we find that some of them were martyred and died young. All through the centuries there were a number of young saints, because of their fidelity to God, service to the mankind and safeguarding their celibacy in honour of Christ. They were martyred young because they did not compromise with the worldly pleasures. Their zeal for God and their adherence to faith and truth in achieving the mission of Christ was exemplary. Jesus died young for the cause of truth and salvation of humankind. His followers also died for the same cause. Among the saints, the young saints revamped the Church at various ages. We feel, we are in need of such young saints today who could influence us to follow Christ meaningfully. Especially, for those who are lost to the worldly affairs and yearning to find meaning in life. As we celebrate Holy Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, the life experiences of these young saints may help rejuvenate us and the Church by enkindling our spirit to work for the mission of Christ. We are in need of a young believing Church today. Here are a few examples of young saints: St. Agnes of Rome (Age 12) : Since the fourth century, Agnes has been held at the highest honour of all the virgin martyrs. St. Kateri Tekakwitha (Age 24): Kateri was an Algonquin-Mohawk Native American who converted to Catholicism at the age of 19. Her tribe shunned her, but she was relentless in her love for Jesus for the rest of her life.

  • The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.
