“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love” (John 15:1-10).

In the last edition of this series, Jesus is the vine to which we, if we are lucky enough to achieve eternal salvation, must be connected to as the branches. In the Old Testament ( 5, 2 and 19 to name a few), Israel is often called the vine, or the vineyard, of God. But that vineyard grows foul, does not produce, and the vines dry up. Jesus is the one true vine, the one vine of the Father, the Vine- dresser that lasts forever and is without blemish. But Jesus and the Father want to share with us, and if we will be grafted onto the vine as branches, through Baptism, and continue by following His commandments. There is a danger if we do not abide in Him of being cut off. If we do not cultivate the gifts He gives us, and live only for ourselves, we will be cut off from Him. Like branches in real life that fall to the ground, we will wither up and die. It is only through this supernatural union with Him that we can receive grace and ultimately salvation.

The final miracle we will talk about, the miracle connected to Jesus as the true vine, is the wedding feast at Cana. Jesus turns water into wine. And not just any wine, the best wine because He is the one, true vine, from whom comes not just wine, but the waters of eternal life. He produces fruit not just in the material sense as He did at the wedding, but spiritually in our lives, and gives us the grace to help affect others. The Sacrament attached to this is, not surprisingly, Holy Matrimony. This couple invited Jesus to their wedding, we should invite Jesus not just to our wedding, but to every part of our marriages. Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote a book called Three to Get Married about how if we are to truly love, we must invite God into our marriage. To love our spouse more than God might sound nice in a mushy way, but it makes them an idol and in the end only leads to heartbreak and disappointment. Loving God above our spouse actually helps us to love our spouse more. Another book to read on this is Sheldon Vanauken’s A Severe Mercy, a spiritual autobiography about a husband and wife who realized they needed to put God before each other and learned to love each other anymore and deal with even sickness and death.

SAINTSSAINTS ININ TRAININGTRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become

John’s Gospel tells us that HE IS THE TRUE VINE Color the image below of the Miracle at Cana

John’s Gospel uses Signs and “I Am” statements to SHOW us that Jesus is God. Unlike the other three synoptic Gospels, which tell us the Good News, John SHOWS us the Good News!

Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the head- waiter tasted the water that had become wine, without know- ing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” John 2: 6-10

We are ending our Lenten season with Jesus’ first miracle. Jesus knew the importance of the wedding with His friends. This celebration was worthy of His help.

This first miracle began Jesus’ three-year ministry and mis- sion. This began His work to spread the good news that the Kingdom of God is at hand--God was about to save the world! SAINTSSAINTS OFOF THETHE WEEKWEEK Sunday, April 4: St. Benedict the Moor—Confessor St. Benedict was born into slavery in San Fratello, in 1526. After being freed by his master, he became a hermit and resided at Montepellegrino where his fellow hermits elected him as their superior. He later became a Franciscan lay brother and served as a cook at St. Mary’s Convent in Palermo. Benedict was elected superior of the convent but stepped aside to become novice master and eventually returned to being the cook out of his strong personal humility. Was a popular confessor and known to work miracles. Monday, April 5: St. Vincent Ferrer—Confessor St. Vincent Ferrer was born on January 23, 1357 in Valencia, Spain. At the age of 19, he joined the Dominican Order despite opposition from his parents. He was ordained to the priesthood and soon made Prior of the Domini- can House in Valencia. Vincent became a fervent missionary and produced numerous conversions, making travels across the European continent to preach the Gospel in Spain, France, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, and other nations. Vincent became active in working to end the Western schism which had plagued the Church since 1378 and resulted in competing claims to the papacy. He eventually decided that his friend, and the bishop who ordained him, Benedict XIII, wasn’t the true . He persuaded Benedict to step aside and end the schism.

Tuesday, April 6: Bl. Pierina Morosini— and Bl. Pierina Morosini was born to a poor family in , Italy on January 7, 1931. She re- ceived education as a seamstress and labored in a fabric factory for eleven years. As a young girl she made a vow of chastity and served as a catechist for children. One day while she was walking home from work, she was attacked by a man who was intent on raping her. Pierina resisted and protected her chastity. The man became enraged and stoned her to death. She passed away two days later from her injuries on April 6, 1957. Wednesday, April 7: St. Celsus—Bishop St. Celsus, also known as Ceallach mac Aedha, was born in Armagh, Ireland in 1080. He was the son of Áed, the Bishop of Armagh, and inherited leadership of his father’s see upon his death in 1105. As bishop, Celsus implemented numerous reforms, including the elimination of the hereditary passing on of the bishopric. Celsus was a friend of St. Mala- chy and he appointed Malachy to be his successor while on his deathbed.

Thursday, April 8: St. Aedesius—Martyr St. Aedesius, brother of St. Apphian, was born in Patara, Turkey sometime during the third cen- tury. He was a pagan philosopher who converted to Christianity. Aedesius was arrested several times for publicly professing his Christian faith. Following his most recent release, he relocated to Egypt. While there he witnessed Christian virgins being sent to brothels for punishment. Aedesius protested this before the local judge who then subjected him to torture and drowning on April 8, 306 in Alexandria, Egypt. Friday, April 9: St. Waldetrudis St. Waldetrudis was raised in a holy family during the seventh century. Both of her parents, her sister, her husband and her children were all canonized saints. She married a nobleman named St. Vincent Madelgarius, the Count of Hainault, with whom she had four children. After their chil- dren had grown, Vincent became a monk and joined a monastery in Hautrnont, France. Walde- trudis founded a convent at Chateaulieu where she lived as an ordinary member instead of its su- perior. The town of Mons, Belgium eventually grew around the convent. Saturday, April 10: Bl. Anthony Neyrot—Penitent and Martyr Bl. Anthony Neyrot was born in Rivoli, Italy in 1425. He joined the Dominicans and was ordained a . After some time ministering at San Marco Church in Florence, he requested and was granted transfer to Sicily. While en route there, his ship was boarded by Muslim pirates and Anthony was imprisoned. To save himself from this imprisonment, Anthony apostatized and became a Muslim. He married the daughter of the caliph and worked on a translation of the Qur’an to Latin. Following the death of his mother, Anthony regretted abandoning Christ. He immediately sought out a Dominican priest in Tunisia and confessed his sin of apostasy. Anthony was readmitted into the Dominican order and went out into the streets proclaiming Christ. The caliph witnessed this and had Anthony stoned to death on Holy Thursday in 1460.
