Sea of Tranquility - Gillan, Ian, Band: Live at the Rainbow 1977 (DVD) Page 1 of 2 Gillan, Ian, Band: Live at the Rainbow 1977 (DVD) The Ian Gillan DVD's keep coming, this one being a 34 minute concert clip from a 1977 appearance at the Rainbow, featuring the Ian Gillan Band. These days many people tend to forget this early band of Gillan's, most remember the harder rocking Gillan that toured extensively and released a handful of powerful albums in the late 70's and early 80's. The IGB were more of a mix of jazz fusion and rock, as opposed to the heavy rock sounds of Gillan, clearly heard on this five song set featuring guitarist Ray Fenwick, keyboard player Colin Towns, bassist John Gustafson, and drummer Mark Nauseef. It's a shame that not more of the band's original material is presented here, as they had a unique sound which paired stunning jazzy arrangements with Gillan's vocal shrieks, which can be heard in full force on "Clear Air Turbulence" and "Money Lender". However, this fusion based sound does not work well at all on Deep Purple classics like "Child In Time", "Smoke on the Water" , and "Woman From Tokyo", especially with Fenwick, who is a fine guitar player in his own right but not very adept at playing songs with heavy riffs. It would have been nice to see and hear him on some other IGB original material rather than the Purple songs, but perhaps this was the only footage that survived from this show. -

It was there that Anmari Wili got to know ‚gathering together“ for Piano LPNO[OHUKZ;OLWPLJLZVU[OPZYLJVYKPUN^LYL^YP[[LUIL[^LLU HUK ;OL`WYLZLU[[OYLLKPɈLYLU[JYLH[P]L periods and are, apart from „gathering together“, all Swiss premieres. LE DONNE IDEALI The project was founded in 1998 and since then devotes itself to the research/study of women in music. Connections between female composers are established and performed by an all-female ensemble. Interview: Cooper-Moore Sometimes it is more difficult, especially during the bleak winter months, to 6 by Kurt Gottschalk put together a good mixture of feature subjects but we quickly forget about that when June rolls around. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, this first month of Artist Feature: Orrin Evans summer. The cab driver is a 60 year old, 260 pound, beet- red faced Irishman whose high spirits at 5 in the morning seem to be causally connected to high spirits. The song is on the radio and it doesn't take but a minute for him to get around to what's clearly been on his mind for like... oh, weeks. "Where you going?" "Well I'm going to this festival in Bern, Switzerland, to sing for some band named STEAMBOAT SWITZERLAND and it's..." "Yeah, I'm going to Thailand next week." Pause here for morality reading. -

RIND is a work using three large self-built cow skin frame drums, 1 horse skin container drum, metal plates and electronics. NOL is a composition by Alex Buess for a percussion trio from 1995. The two pieces were recorded live in 2010 and 2003 respectively, also featuring the musicians Daniel Stalder, Peter Conradin Zumthor and Matthias Würsch. They were electronically treated by Cortex in the studion in 2015. This release continues the col - laboration with Alex Buess that goes back to the pre-Praxis days of the Vision label since 1987 and includes Praxis 31 by 16-17 and Praxis 48 by Cortex , both of which also included Daniel Buess. Cover art by Darkam and layout by Lynx. ALEX BUESS – is a musician, saxophonist, composer, producer who lives in Basel, Switzerland. He has collaborated with Stephan Wittwer, Paul Schütze, Kevin Martin, Peter Brötzmann, William Parker, Raoul Björkenheim, Toshinori Kondo, Bill Laswell, Kevin Shields, Tim Hodgkinson, Michael Wertmüller and many other musicians in the wide field of improvisation, electronics, electroacoustic music and composition. He plays/played in the groups ICE, GOD, Phantom City, The Bug, Sprawl, Cortex and his own group 16-17, as well as Melx and The Electric Noise Twist. -

1 m a p s • v o l u m e X I n u m b e r 1 • s p r i n g 2 0 0 1 Bulletin of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies “A Tidal Wave of Ecstasy!” On March 21, 2001, this evocative phrase washed over me as I watched C-SPAN for all three hours of a U.S. Senate hearing on “The Use of the Drug Ecstasy.” I imagined a gentle tidal wave of warm, wet water, with myself tumbling over and over joyously in the midst of it, finally landing, laughing and unbruised, in the arms of a lifeguard on a sunny, sandy beach. Unfortunately, the tidal wave of ecstasy carried totally different connotations for the Senators. In the fall of 2000, Congress had passed a bill asking the U.S. Sentencing Commission to recommend an increase in the penalties for MDMA. Two days before the Senate hearing, several MDMA researchers, drug policy activists and I had fruitlessly testified before the Sentencing Commission about MDMA’s risks and benefits, opposing the increase in penalties on scientific grounds (http://www.maps.org/news). The day before the Senate hearing, the Commission announced its decision. Dose for dose, Ecstasy would now be more heavily punished than heroin! In testimony presented to the Senators, ecstasy was linked with poison, abuse, death, brain damage, addiction, violence, damage to dopamine and serotonin brain cells, rotting flesh falling off the side of a user’s face, holes in the brain, a high school cheerleader unable to make it to practice since she was in thrall to ecstasy and would “lie, cheat and steal” to buy more, and a generation of young people who thought MDMA was harmless even as it insidiously robbed them of their mental abilities and moral sensibilities. -

Annotation The diploma thesis “John Zorn between 1990 and 1994“ concerns Zorn’s bands Naked City and Painkiller.
