Much in the way hip-hop proved it was still one of the most creative and vital formats this past year, R&B is now catching that same creative fever it’s been lacking since Wendy and Lisa left The Revolution. Recently albums by The Weeknd and Frank Ocean echo the minimalism of Drake and Kanye West to yield some truly beautiful, stripped down soul music that once again showcase the heart and lyrics over high production. If you want to ride this party train and don’t know where to start loving soul again, might I suggest the old standards? You can’t lose with divas like The Best of Whitney Houston, with two newish tracks; or the brand new comeback record by Xtina Aguilera, both out on November 13. If you can’t wait that long you can pick up Chicago’s own Heather Headley’s new collection of covers, Only One In the World, in anticipation of her run in the West End’s The Bodyguard musical; or Anita Baker’s new album Only Forever, which hits stands as this issue hits the street. Now that you’ve got your comfort zone set, there’re some past acts lighting new creative flames lately -- to mixed results. Brandy’s latest, Two Eleven, might as well have been left in Twenty Eleven. It rings similar to Beyoncé’s hookless disappointment, 4; last year I trashed it in this column, but I still love that girl, no matter. Here’s hoping Alicia Keys’ foray into modern territory (Girl On Fire, 11/27) hits rather than misses. If the single is any indication, her dress may be the edgiest thing happening here. Now you’re ready to take some chances with your soul. Do not resist picking up Kaleidoscope Dream, the newest by Miguel. In the same vein as Kanye’s 808s or Frank Ocean, Miguel taps into classic soul structures and vocal styles, but puts them through a filter from the future, creating an unsettling but sexy mix. Possibly one of the finest collections this year. And keep an eye out for both Missy Elliot and D’Angelo’s comeback albums, or Aaliyah’s posthumous Drake- produced CD, rumored for 2013. Early signs point to an even better 2013: The year “soul” took back its soul. Keep an eye out for DJ Moose’s new Old Skool night in 2013 ... 10nightspots October 24, 2012 If I hafta hear this damn song one more time tonight ... • How Ninja from Die Antwoord Performs South African White Masculinities Through the Digital Archive
ZEF AS PERFORMANCE ART ON THE ‘INTERWEB’: How Ninja from Die Antwoord performs South African white masculinities through the digital archive by Esther Alet Rossouw Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree MAGISTER ARTIUM in the Department of Drama Faculty of Humanities University of Pretoria Supervisor: Dr M Taub AUGUST 2015 1 ABSTRACT The experience of South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord’s digital archive of online videos is one that, in this study, is interpreted as performance art. This interpretation provides a reading of the character Ninja as a performance of South African white masculinities, which places Die Antwoord’s work within identity discourse. The resurgence of the discussion and practice of performance art in the past thirty years has led some observers to suggest that Die Antwoord’s questionable work may be performance art. This study investigates a reconfiguration of the notion of performance art in online video. This is done through an interrogation of notions of risk, a conceptual dimension of ideas, audience participation and digital liveness. The character Ninja performs notions of South African white masculinities in their music videos, interviews and short film Umshini Wam which raises questions of representation. Based on the critical reading of Die Antwoord’s online video performance art, this dissertation explores notions of Zef, freakery, the abject, new ethnicities, and racechanges, as related to the research field of whiteness, to interpret Ninja’s performance of whiteness. A gendered reading of Die Antwoord’s digital archive is used to determine how hegemonic masculinities are performed by Ninja. It is determined that through their parodic performance art, Die Antwoord creates a transformative intervention through which stagnant notions of South African white masculinity may be reconfigured.

MThe city was incorporated in 1826, only a few years after General Andrew Jackson acquired the land west of the Tennessee River from the Chickasaws by treaty. Tennessee was part of the western frontier of the young nation. The sheriff of Shelby County was appointed when the county was organized, but soon a law enforcement officer was appointed specifically to serve the town of Memphis. Memphis’s first lawman was John J. Balch. He was elected as Town Constable on May 12, 1827. A town constable had the same power as other constables of the county.

Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise.
