THE LEGEND OF THE HOLDSWORXH CUP The Cup, a tall, oolid silver flamboyajitly decorated Grecian urn ourmouilted by a cover with an emu guid chick, was presented to the Cricket Association for annual competition between the 1st Grade Clubs by Mr, Holdsworth in the year 1882, The conditions of the competition contained a pr oviso that ajay Club winning in three consecutive years would become the absolute owners of the Trc^hy, The Annual General Meeting of the Club was held at the Oxford Hotel, Oxford Street, on August 28th, 1884, Mr, Richard Teece being in the Chair and Mr, Tommy Garrett, honorary secretary. The Sydney Morning Herald of the 1st September of that year records the following extract from the Club's Annueil Report:- < "The prowess of your representatives in the field has surpassed the achievements of former years cind the interest which has been evinced by the members of the University in the welfare of the Club has exceeded all expectations. During the past season the 1st XI took part in 9 matches and were defeated on only one occasion; winning 4 euid 4 being drawn. The single defeat was sustained at the hands of the Newcastle Cricket Club on the Association Ground last Easter Monday, The contests for the Holdsworth Challenge Cup have at last been concluded and your Committee are proud to report that having succeeded in passing through three successive Cup seasons with one defeat the Club is now the possessor of the coveted Trophy," The Cup, in a solid timber case, was stored in the basement under the Oval Stand, but heavy flooding silted up the store room cind the Trophy disappeared from human ken for more them two generations. In 1956 a new Cricket President, in search of some extra storage space, had the basement excavated and the magnificent Trophy, well-protected in the massive case, was brought to light. In 1959 the Cup, mounted on a red-cedar plinth, was put up for Competition (by the Club) against a team organised by the President of the Sports Union, Professor Dunstan, and this year's match (now known as the Patron's Match) is the fourteenth in the series. THE "Motitv" FAITHFULL BAT From a truck-load of rubbish proceeding to the tip in 1956 einother relic of the Club'o early history was also salvaged a Cobbett bat, still in a good state of repair bearing the following inscription in gold - Presented to H, M. Faithfull Esq by the M, U, C, C, (Melbourne University Cricket Club) as a mark of appreciation of his splendid bowling in the Inter-Varsity Match, This was the first Inter-Varsity Match in Australia Monty was the eldest of the four Faithfull boys, educated at the Iving's School and the University of Sydney, he played for the Club for many years. Their historic home was Springfield Station at Goulburn, as was "Springfield House" in Springfield Avenue, Kings Cross. The site of "Springfield House" is now occupied by The Village Centre, designed by Jon Erby's architectural firm. One of his partners in those hiatoric Inter-Varsity games of the 1870's was Mr. Iceton, later Monty's partner in the legal firm of Iceton, FEiithfull and Baldock, UNIVERtSITY VETERANS 1969 - 70 BATTING AVERAGES Name inns N,0.
