The Honorary Presidents Report

Firstly, thank you to all the Northbridge CC Executive, Committee and Members on a great season of cricket in 2016/17. We once again fielded 5 teams across A Reserve, B, C and D Grades, with an improved performance from all sides across the board.

In terms of on-field performances, only the B Grade and D Grade (Red) sides made the semi-finals this year, with the B Grade side cruelly denied an opportunity to play that semi-final due to an archaic association decision regarding the accuracy of the wet weather phone line, despite the semi-final being played on an all-weather synthetic ground. The B Grade side probably fell a bit short of expectations in terms of ladder position, but the fact that between Lakshay Kumar and Divyesh Thakkar they took home pretty much all the B Grade association awards, I think they would have gone close to winning the comp had they played the semi-final. The D Grade (Red) side amazingly got on at Gore Creek despite the week of rain, but some missed opportunities in the field probably cost them the chance to make the big one, but nevertheless a great achievement from debut skipper David Medcalf and his team. The A Reserve side managed to get a number of wins in the NCU turf competition, which was a great achievement for the side and proof that the club is on the way up again. One of the many highlights from the A Res side was the amazing comeback at Eastwood (in fact there were 2 big comebacks at that ground!) that saw the side crumbling to 8/80 odd, only to see Nic Savage and our very own Indian Queenslander Who Melted, Rav Sarkar, get the side towards victory with Andrew Lazzaro joining Nic in the middle to secure victory. C Grade narrowly missed the finals, but some outstanding performances from the likes of Pete Collins who took the C Grade award with his right arm offies, and Andrew Greenlees who scored a great ton down at Primrose. Then finally the D Grade (Blue) side, which added a quality player like Monty Noble to the eclectic mix of individuals who showed great fight, but unfortunately couldn’t quite get above their Red rivals on the ladder.

This was the 98th season in the clubs history, and was certainly one that was a bit like a batsman out in the middle negotiating the nervous nineties. The start of the season even saw a T-Drill in action at Northbridge Oval showing promise of the season to come. Again we had the great training setup at Sydney Boys High, which allows us to train no matter the weather. The numbers in training attendance were great, however that enthusiasm did start to dwindle towards the end of the season which is something that we can definitely improve on in 2017/18. We encountered a couple of issues through the season revolving around attitudes of players, and those who didn’t want to get on the NCC bus and be a part of the culture found themselves not playing matches. It is an important part of the club, where we have an inclusive culture catering to cricketers of all levels but no individuals are bigger than the club. We have a unique club, in that we follow a bit of the old- style club format where players in different grades talk to each other, rather than the newer format of clubs that are basically only share a banner and not a friendship. Northbridge has been around far longer than all of those clubs, and it’s the basis of the friendships made, and maintained, that will keep the club around for even longer. Another highlight of the season was the fact that we took home 15 of the individual awards at the NSCA presentation night, which is numbers that I’ve not seen from the club in the 10 years I’ve been a part of it. It goes to show the quality of cricketers that we have, and now this can only be topped by team success as we march towards our centenary.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the captains and vice-captains of the 5 sides, for once again putting up with the administrative fun that goes with getting 11 able-bodied (or for some just 11 bodies) on the park each weekend. It’s not the easiest thing to do, it takes a fair bit of patience and understanding, so thanks guys for your support.

Thanks also to our home-away-from home, Billy Barry’s Hotel, for looking after us each evening post match by providing a place for us all to gather and tell lies about how well we did each day a pint and a $10 meal. The support of our sponsors is greatly appreciated as it helps us to keep our costs low. Towards the end of the season we even managed to some meat-tray raffles which saw us generate some additional cash, which will

Page 9 of 56 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org hopefully be on again in the season to come.

I would also like to say a special thanks to our Executive committee, Chris Olver, Andre Maddocks, Alex Davey, David Allan and Dale Webster who work behind the scenes to keep things moving. From arranging training, the Bunnings BBQs, chasing sponsors, arranging cricket kit/balls/stumps/bails/ markers/scorebooks. You name it, these guys helped to make sure all our members could enjoy their cricket.

Lastly, we move on to our 99th year in season 2017/18. Another step closer to raising the bat for our centenary which will be a great year for the club as a whole. We will have a number of events in that year, including a proposed tour to the UK which all members would be eligible to participate in, so keep an eye out for that. So once again thank you to all our members for another great year, and I look forward to seeing everyone in the pre-season before embarking on another successful Northbridge season.

Kind Regards, Mitch Nicholls Honorary President Northbridge Cricket Club

Stephen tragically passed away in the off-season at the age of 33. This award is in memory of Stephen and his commitment on and off the field. The award is designed to recognise the Players Player – voted by the players on a 3-2-1 basis, week in week out. Any member, in any team of the club can win this award.

This 3-2-1 votes are scaled based on the number of games played by each team. This is to compensate for our One Day sides, which play a significantly larger number of games each season compared to our other teams.

A Grade Captains Report – Andre Maddocks & Mitch Nicholls

Following the strides made as a playing group in the 2016/17 season, A grade could genuinely argue for the first time in many years about their excitement about the season ahead. While missing the finals by a solitary point was heartbreaking, and only winning 4 matches when we realistically could have won 6 or 7 seemed disappointing at the time, this season was one of outstanding progress both as a cricket side and group of individuals.

While the weather in the end was the enemy in regards to a finals place, we possibly sold ourselves short with the bat at some important times during the season which ended up the difference between 5th place as opposed to a comfortable finals qualification. Whilst every player improved significantly throughout the year, the ability to bat for long periods of time, negotiate tricky situations and put an appropriate price on each is something that A grade will look to continue to improve in 2017/18.

In these report formats it can be difficult to express to value and contribution of each individual appropriately I will endeavour to do my best (arguably in batting order, with nicknames!):

Max Heard: ‘The Asset’ consistently proved his worth to us throughout the season. Whilst continually looking the part with the bat, Max was unable to push on for a big score. Comfortably the best wicketkeeper in the competition with the gloves, look for him to dominate the batting charts in the next season. Thanks to Maddi for looking after the dogs and helping out with the wines!

Rav Sarkar: ‘The Indian Queenslander Who Melted’ made a number of valuable contributions throughout the season with bat, ball, holiday times and an impressive chest. Always setting an impressive tempo opening the batting Rav threatened to take the game away from a few sides but probably just lost patience at inopportune times. That said, he never got out to a bad ball - just ask him! One of the craftiest medium pacers going around in the competition and a terrific senior player around the group. Ok bloke for a Queenslander. Thanks Nikki for looking after the dogs!

Tim Cameron: ‘Buckets, Fizz, or Fizzy Buckets’ was an outstanding contributor to the side all season. An outstanding human being who added significantly to the group Timmy’s leg spinners were a hugely underrated weapon for our side particularly through the second half of the season. Made a quality 77 early in the season with the bat but may have used up all his luck. A well deserved recipient of the fielding award and a much loved team member. If Newcastle doesn’t happen, we are all very keen to have you back!

Eamon Flanagan: ‘Noodles’ move to Brisbane left a huge hole in the side, losing both a quality wicketkeeper- batsman and personality within the group environment. Always acrobatic with the gloves, his match winning half vs. North Ryde RSL typified the courage and strength of character that he brought to the squad. Always a place in the team for him should he want it going forward. All the best in Brissie, don’t forget where you are from!

Adrian Hookham: ‘Hook’ was a great get mid-season, adding a touch of class to our middle order. While his numbers didn’t do his huge natural ability justice with the bat, never at once did he look troubled and as teammates we were always surprised at the loss of his wicket. Hoping to lock him in for next season as he could be the future of A grade with the bat.

Kartik R.: ‘Special K’ was an inspired selection but truly found his home in A grade cricket. Powerful batsman, strong throwing arm and a good arm in the outfield as well. Took some key wickets and surprised both opposition and teammates with his genuine pace. Some key contributions with the bat, particularly in the important win vs. North Shore. Expect him to dominate A grade next year. Cool surname, not going to pretend to spell it.

Page 17 of 56 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org

Sam McKibbin: ‘Mary’ fronted up mid season with a poor cap, no spikes and a proud seam. By seasons end he was one of the best all-rounders in the competition, showing outstanding application with the bat and bowling very few bad balls. Much loved by his new teammates, he will benefit immensely next season from dusting off the cobwebs last and will no doubt finish as one of the top run scorers and wicket takers.

Mitch Sturt: ‘Skirty’ initially flirted with leaving the club early in the year only to return with some terrific contributions and a new lease on life with his cricket. Removed of the stresses of administration and entrepreneurism I dare say Mitch enjoyed his season post-Christmas more than he has for a number of seasons. Outstanding first up with the new ball and at the death he found a yard of pace that he may have thought lost. Out of luck with the bat but keep working hard and the runs will come. Most importantly, a dynamic personality within the group upon his return, everyone enjoyed his company.

Mitch Nicholls (c): ‘Nipples’ started to find his rhythm late in the season with both bat and ball. Struggled with injury for a lot of the year but bowled some outstanding spells with both older and newer ball. Has the potential to tear apart attacks with the bat, perhaps not thinking and just hitting is the way of the future. An absolute honour to share the captaincy with an outstanding bloke like Mitch. Look out for him fully fit next year. Thanks to Sam for helping out with the dogs and arriving with much needed coffee.

Nic Savage: With the originally coined nickname of ‘Savage’, his musical theatre exploits unfortunately diminished his output on the field in the latter part of the season. Early on he was capable of bowling with genuine pace and was always resolute with the bat to the point he is now pushing all-rounder status. Unlikely hero of 2 matches with the bat, nudging us to victories vs North Ryde and Vikings.

Alex Davey: ‘The burglar’ can be extremely proud of his season in A grade. Just 1 wicket off being leading wicket taker for both the side and the association, the highlight of a number of his teammates season was seeing him take his unforgettable 5-fer against Vikings in round 2. Took important wickets throughout the year. Thankless task being a change seamer in a strong attack he always did an outstanding job when called upon. His resolute defence vs Neutral Bay Jets went a long way to staving off outright.

Andrew Lazzaro: ‘The Real Chop King’, or ‘The Ninja’ depending on who you ask. Comfortably the most improved cricketer in the A grade competition with his off-spin playing an important role in the attack, despite occasionally limited opportunities. Will continue to improve with the ball with some big hauls around the corner. Outstanding team man and stoic with the bat, guiding us home against Vikings in a crucial last wicket stand.

Thanks also to Lucas McCreedie, John Mitchell, Andy Langham, Tim Lloyd, Divyesh Thakkar, Guy Lewis and Michael Smith for their contributions at times during the season. Special shout out to Josh Goodwin, who was arrested in his valiant attempt to arrive at the ground to help out against Neutral Bay Jets. At this stage Josh is assumed innocent.

Enjoy winter and bring on 2017/18. Sincere thanks to everyone for their contributions during the season. Particularly my cricket husband Mitch Nicholls - thank you for your support and I genuinely love co- captaining the side with you.

Cheers

Andre Maddocks

B Grade Report – Divyesh Thakker

Northbridge Blue played 12 matches, won 5, lost 6 and drew 1 this season. It was a disappointing season for us as we know we are a much better side than the results show. We made the semi finals for the second time in a row, but once again we couldn’t advance as the match got washed out. In a season of ups and downs, I am proud that we always supported each other and never lost the fighting spirit that we have shown for 2 seasons.

After losing the first 2 matches, we knew we had to win the third one to get back into the winning habit as soon as possible. We bowled exceptionally well and our fielding, for the first time this season, was also amazing as we kept Killara to 108 all out in a 2 dayer. We lost 2 early wickets and were 2/2 after 1.1 overs. Lakshay and I put together a 95 run partnership before I got out in search for quick runs so we could achieve the target on day 1. However, we were 9 runs behind the target at stumps which we comfortably got passed on day 2 as we registered our first win. This also marked the start of our best phase of the season.

We won our 4th match as well. North Sydney crawled their way to 186 in 70 overs on day 1. On day 2, we lost 3 wickets cheaply and were 3/39. Lakshay, on his favourite ground, started to score some runs quickly. Sanjog then joined Lakshay at 4/73 as they put a 107 run partnership to almost seal the match for us. A small collapse worried us a little before Rishabh hit the winning 6. Lakshay got 94 as he carried on his good form at Blackman.

Our 5th round was against a C-grade side, where we batted first and got 6/313 before declaring and giving Chatswood a tricky 4 overs to face before stumps. Lakshay was once again amongst the runs making a brilliant 156*. Disgraceful umpiring allowed them to escape with a draw, and we entered the top 4 for the first time in the season, and never dropped down to 5th since.

We lost our 6th round due to more bias umpiring, and were glad to see a professional umpire for our 7th round as a near by A-grade game was called off. We bowled the opposition out for 152 at Northbridge Oval, with Digant taking a 5-for and then easily managed to chase it with 7 wickets in hand and 8 overs to spare, ending a brilliant year for us.

2017 started off well as we managed to beat a c-grade side in our first match of the year. After that convincing victory came a big loss to NSL, which allowed them to stay in the hunt for a semis spot, and sealing our spot became a bit more difficult. However, we were back on track with a dominating victory in the next match at our home ground, Northbridge Oval. Despite losing myself and lakshay early, hamish carried on and got a brilliant 57 and with support from Rishiraj, Jasdeep and Rishabh we managed to get 226 and had the opposition 32/1 at stumps. On day 2, we came out with a positive attitude and great intent. Naynesh bowled one of the best spells of the season as he picked up 2 key wickets and kept the runs down as he was unplayable. Had 3 slips, 2 gullies and no covers, still went for less than 2 runs an over in his 21 overs! We bowled them out for 99 in 44.3 overs, batted again and got 96/3 declared in 11.3 overs and then had them 23/3 before a small partnership saved them as we shook hands with 4 overs to spare on day 2.

After that match, we decided that we are in good form and should be aiming to finish in the top 2. We lost the next match by 30 runs in a low scoring encounter, and then had 2 washouts which made it impossible for us to finish second, however, that meant we were definitely in the playoffs regardless of what happens in the last match. Poor fielding allowed NSL to 4/189 in the last round but we were up to

Page 25 of 56 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org the challenge with the bat and never let the go higher than 5.5. Despite that effort, we fell short by 3 runs in yet another thriller against NSL. Then, rain on Friday, and unfortunate circumstances washed out the semis, despite there being only little rain on Saturday, and none on Sunday as we were knocked out without getting a chance to play.

Overall, we were proud of our efforts. We had a couple of close matches that didn’t go our way, a lot of umpiring bias going against us, but we fought hard, never took a backward step and had brilliant individual performances, as NBB players occupied the 1st, 2nd and 4th place for NSCA Champion Player for B-grade. We had a couple of quality new inclusions to NBB, regained form from a couple of players and a brilliant team atmosphere this season. All that and a huge drive to win the next season are very encouraging and promising signs for the team. NBB will come back stronger next season and go all the way. Go The Bridge!!

C Grade Report –Chris Olver

C Grade has had an interesting second year as a new side with many highlights and unfortunately some low lights. A good test for a side is having more wins than the previous season.. Which we did! While we lost more games that we won, 3 losses came within less than 20 runs. Two of those losses were close games against B Grade sides where previous years we got outrighted. Huge progress.

Nearly every player has contributed towards the season, highlights include:

 Andrew Greenlees scoring his highest score of 120 and another knock of 80. Overall averaging 50+. It must have been the additional support of his new 1st young Greenlees Jnr.  Matt Gabb, much like the previous year.. Taking wickets and having hard luck with some unlucky drops across . Consistent line and length every over. Great bowling to have in any side. A highlight was watching Matt as a night watchman lasting the whole innings and taking us to a victory just short of a 50.  Pete Collins bowling spin taking the top wickets award for the team. With a promotion to open the batting, there wasn’t much we could do to stop him. Many thanks to Pete for his support off the field finding players at the last minute as well.  Johnny Christo, the ever reliable vice captain on the field. Johnny scored amazingly with the bat and returned to the wickets column. Huge appreciation for your support in every direction.  James Bentivoglio, a new player to the team who grabbed the gloves at the first chance and it was near impossible to get them off him again. Cementing his place as opening with Pete, James showed consistent patience. Look forward to seeing how you go in the second season at the Bridge.  Dale Webster, always ready to the grab the bat and a real team player. It would be hard not including him in the list  Mitch Nicholls who is always helpful to fill in and support all the sides when help is required.

To the new players, thanks to David Harney playing an important role in the second half of the season when injuries hit, Timmy Lloyd when I could steal him from A Grade and Troy who in his first knock got on the boundary trying to go for his first 50 for the club..

For the members who put their body on the line: Charlie O’Loan and Michael Smith.. Thanks lads for your hard effort during the season and hope the injuries have healed for the new season.

My final note would be the removal of some bad attitudes in the club. The major lowlight were two players trying not only split a team but a club apart. As a secretary and captain, decisions were made that were difficult and trying but I hoping now that with those players no longer within the club that it can continue to grow to new levels.

Next season will hopefully bring us better luck in those close knit games but it’s been a great season to play cricket with you all.

Looking forward to pre-season (kinda).

D Grade (Red) Captains Report – David Medcalf

The start of the season was a big “feeling out” period for both me as the new captain, as well as a new bunch of people who had not played together before.

 When we all started to know who does what, and how well – we began putting together some good performances, particularly with the ball.  After being pretty much at the bottom of the table for the first half of the year, we then really started to “gell”, and after Christmas won five out of the last six matches of our regular season.  These weren’t easy wins, we fought hard for every run and every wicket – every match!  Against the odds we made the semis!  In the semi-finals we batted first and fell a few runs short with the bat, but then in true Northbridge Red style, we put in a really good effort with the ball, and if it wasn’t for a couple of dropped catches we would have gone close to winning the game.  Overall this team was a big success this year. It had the best vibe of any team I have ever been involved in, and I know everyone is keen to have another crack again next year.  It’s difficult to single individuals out because everyone gave 110%.  Subash Swami was our highest Wicket taker,  Highest Runs Tom Hall  My Captains Award went to Dane Clarke who always brought sports drinks and sweets for everyone to the game, always takes first umpiring stint in each match without being asked, and puts out the cones and collects them for every match.  Rodney Mottley was invaluable both in taking over and entering the scores at the end of each match, and for his assistance selecting teams.  Congratulations to team member Mitch Whyman who reached a massive 250 Northbridge wickets during his time with the club.  I’d like to thank all my team members for making my job far easier than what it could have been.

Finally, I’d like to thank the committee members for your support during the season.

“Go the Bridge”
