This season 38 sides competed (although only 36 completed the season) in six NSCA grades and a further 6 in the NCU. Again, we had 1062 players who have participated. Welcome to Killara United and Artarmon Raptors, new clubs who had two sides each (in B and C Grade and B One and C One respectively). Congratulations to North Shore on winning the club championship and to our premiers Pymble Pigs, West Pymble, Artarmon Raptors, Cammeray, Killara Bingles and North Sydney Leagues. The Koola Park upgrade was completed towards the end of the season. The wicket has been placed more centrally, eliminating the short boundary. Hopefully the quality of the wicket improves! We also lost Castle Cove Oval for the first four weeks meaning one game was played on synthetic – not ideal but there is a shortage of turf grounds in the area and several grounds used by other associations were also unavailable. The committee again managed to secure Marrickville Oval each Sunday. The expansion of women’s cricket meant we were unable to secure synthetic wickets in the Manly Warringah area. There was a frustrating end to the regular season for sides just outside the semi-finals positions. Five of the last six rounds were badly affected by the weather. Four were lost to rain and for 11 February NSW Cricket took the unprecedented step of recommending cancellation of all games because of the heat. Was this due to global warming or increased recognition of health and safety issues? Whatever the reason we now have another factor to consider. Our side in Martin Shield struggled and I suggest the committee look at ways to get our strongest team on the park. We should also consider entering the Telegraph Shield (the inter-association under 23 competition). We have continued discussions with NSJCA for a clearer pathway for the juniors to move into senior cricket. I have also spoken to the local NSW Cricket Development Officer in the hope that we can also better access school leavers. Last but not least, I would like to thank the other committee members (Martin Kinnane (Vice President), Adam Brown (Treasurer), Greg Carmock (Secretary) Tom Shanahan (Competition Secretary), Mitch Nicholls (Registrar), Nick Brady, Harry Brown, Michael Dillon, Wayne Travers, Jarrod Whetton and Yasir Zia for their efforts and to Mitch Nicholls for compiling the annual report. Andy Dickinson President - 2 - Northern Suburbs Cricket Association, Inc Annual Report 2016-17 REVIEW OF FINANCIAL RESULTS The financial statements of the not-for-profit entity, Northern Suburbs Cricket Association Inc (the Association) for the year ended 30 April 2017 are provided herein. Some commentary on the financial results of the association for the year ending 30 April 2017 is provided below. Financial performance The Association had a net operating loss for the 2016-17 season of $2,987. There were nil payments made in respect to costs for previous financial years that had not previously been brought to account. Revenue Membership subscriptions for team entries were $87,095, an increase of $9,135 relative to the prior year. The increase was largely attributable to a rise in team entry fees of $100 per team; fees for turf grades increasing from $2,900 to $3,000 per team and fees for other regular grades playing on synthetic wickets increasing from $1,800 to $1,900 per team. There was also a small increase in team numbers from 41 to 42. Sponsorship of $4,000 represented a payment from Kookaburra of $2,500 and a payment from Greg Chappell Cricket Centre of $1,500. Expenses Operating expenses were $94,974, an increase of $10,205 relative to the previous year. The increase was attributable to four main costs: ground hire costs increased due to an increase in team numbers from 41 to 44 (notably 2 teams later withdrew from the competition); umpire costs increased due to greater usage of umpires in the regular season plus an increase in umpires required in the final series due to poor weather and the need for reserve days; presentation night due to a greater attendance; greater trophy costs due to the purchase of trophies for the NCU competition. It is also noted honoraria were not paid to the committee; instead funds were used promoting the NSCA. Assets Property and equipment includes rain and hessian covers for the wickets at Koola, Willoughby and Castle Cove. The covers are stored in a storage unit at Storage King in Artarmon, together with perpetual trophies and other items. The Association is due a refund for umpire costs paid during the Martin Shield competition of $466. Liabilities The Association has yet to receive an invoice from Marrickville Council for the use of Marrickville Oval (despite repeated requests). The Association is also due to recover ground hire costs from North Shore Junior Cricket Association. An estimate of net ground hire costs owing of $3,000 has been accrued. Cash The Association had cash balances totalling $81,671 (adjusted for unpresented cheques) with the Commonwealth Bank as at 30 April 2017. Cash increased $1,222, relative to last season, despite a small operating loss. The increase in cash was due to the expensing of prepaid storage costs and the accrual of ground hire costs. - 3 - Northern Suburbs Cricket Association, Inc Annual Report 2016-17 STATEMENT OF PROFIT OR LOSS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2017 2017 2016 Note $ $ Revenue from competitions Membership subscriptions 87,095 77,960 Penalties, fines & protest fees 50 Other 166 Other income Sponsorships 4,000 4,000 Interest income 726 1,215 Total income 91,987 83,225 Competition expenses Ground hire (62,828) (60,026) Umpire fees and costs (18,931) (14,790) Representative matches (901) (924) Storage and transport (1,438) (1,752) Insurance (3,165) (2,590) Depreciation of property & equipment 4 - Administration expenses Presentation night (3,083) (1,622) Trophies (2,239) (1,159) Marketing & promotions (1,200) - Printing & stationery (400) (480) Postage (196) (356) Subscriptions & memberships (330) (22) Honoraria - (850) Meeting costs (154) (110) Bank charges (109) (89) Total expenses (94,974) (84,769) Operating profit / (loss) for the year (2,987) (1,544) Prior year expenses Ground hire - (800) Umpires fees - (1,155) Net surplus / (deficiency) for the year (2,987) (3,499) The above statement of profit and loss should be read in conjunction with the accompanying Notes. - 4 - Northern Suburbs Cricket Association, Inc Annual Report 2016-17 STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION AS AT 30 APRIL 2017 2017 2016 Note $ $ Current assets Cash at bank 2 81,671 80,449 Trade & other receivables 3 466 1,675 Total current assets 82,137 82,124 Non-current assets Property & equipment 4 - - Total non-current assets - - Total assets 82,137 82,124 Current liabilities Trade & other payables 5 3,000 - Total current liabilities 3,000 - Total liabilities 3,000 - Net assets 79,137 82,124 Funds Retained funds opening 82,124 85,623 Net surplus / (deficiency) for the year (2,987) (3,499) Total funds 79,137 82,124 The above statement of financial position should be read in conjunction with the accompanying Notes.
