The Honorary Presidents Report

I would like to start off by thanking the Northbridge Cricket Club Executive, Committee and Members on a fantastic season. 2015/16 saw us fielding 5 teams across the hybrid/2-day competitions, which far exceeded our initial expectations for the season.

It was very pleasing to see Northbridge finish with 2 teams playing in semi-finals, with both the B and C Grade sides making it through to the business end of the season only to fall short at the semi-final hurdle. Both teams should be congratulated on great seasons and I certainly look forward to seeing them go better in the next season.

This season was not without it’s troubles. We did lose a considerable ammount of members who didn’t believe in the core values of the Northbridge club, whilst it being disappointing to lose members who had played with the club for many years, this also created opportunities for others to stand up in their stead and we certainly had a good number there with the likes of Rav Sarkar, Eamonn Flanagan, Alex Davey, Rodney Mottley, Michael Smith all putting their hands up to take on the challenge of playing in our A Grade side. We also saw the introduction of new blood into the club, with the guys coming over from Kirribilli Crusaders to join us for half of the season, only to see them remain as fully fledged Northbridge members. Some may be surprised at this, but the success of the Northbridge club is down to the way that the members treat each other and build life long friendships and we have certainly done that with our new members who will help us move forward and create an even better club.

We also saw a level of inter-club bonding this year that I have never seen in my time at the club. Traditionally you see members stick with the guys in their teams and not too much mingling between teams. This season certainly saw that change dramatically, whether it be the training sessions at Sydney Boys High to the post- match gatherings at Billy Barry’s Hotel, it makes me immensely proud to see the club come together and take genuine interest in how each other goes on a Saturday, and celebrate each other’s success and failures regardless of which team they played for. This is the core values of Northbridge, where we endeavour to create an environment where we cater for all cricketers regardless of ability, from the social cricketers to the serious cricketers. Most clubs measure their success in the number of games they win, but I would measure the success of the Northbridge club by the number of smiles on peoples faces, and this season sure brought about many of them.

This season also saw the club fielding a number of players in the NSCA representative team playing in the Martin Shield competition. Northbridge submitted a number of players, with many of the A Grade guys, as well as some B Grade guys getting a run. This was also the first time in a while that the NSCA team managed to win a match, no doubt due to the strong contributions of the Northbridge members.

At this point I would like to thank all our captains and vice captains for their leadership throughout the season. We had some new captains on board this year, some who had never tossed the coin before, and seeing their growth throughout the season was pleasing. It’s never easy getting 55 guys capable of standing in the sun for 6 hours chasing a red ball around an oval, but you all stuck together and put the club first which is great to see.

I would also like to thank our sponsors, 3P Learning and the newly appointed home of Northbridge CC, Billy Barry’s Hotel for their support this season. Without third party sponsorship the club just wouldn’t function, so we appreciate having them on board and hope to continue the relationships for a long time moving forward.

We also couldn’t of had the season we did without the 3 BBQs that we secured through the tireless work of the great David Allan, where we raised funds for the club that assisted us in securing the training venues that we had. David does a lot of work for the club, and is a pillar of strength for us behind the scenes keeping morale high and the wheels moving. Those 3 days are Bunnings are hard work, in particular the day on Father’s Day which is

Page 9 of 57 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org traditionally the single busiest day at Bunnings, and over 1,100 sausages were cooked and served to a hungry mob throughout the day! We had a number of volunteers who helped over the 3 days, so thank you to all that did help out as we couldn’t have done that without you.

Thank you also to the Executive members, Chris Olver, Jonas Berglund, Alex Davey, David Allan and Dale Webster. In particular, thanks for the efforts of Chris who lead the way in getting us the fancy new training venue, sponsorship, shirts, chasing up cash from members all the while taking on the responsibility of captain of the C Grade side.

Finally, thank you to all of the members for giving me the privilege of being the president of the Northbridge Cricket Club. It is certainly an honour to serve in that role, and I have learned from the best in Mitch Whyman who showed the way for the club to grow and survive. We are coming up to our centenary year, where we will hopefully have things organised for an overseas tour amongst other events, and I hope to see all of you still running around with us then. It’s going to be a hell of a season that one!

Go the Bridge!

Regards, Mitch Nicholls a/ Honorary President Northbridge Cricket Club

Perpetual Trophies

The Ken Wood Cup

The Club’s perpetual major award, the “Ken Wood Cup” is awarded each season to the outstanding member of the club. This award was first awarded in the 1947/48 season in memory of Sergeant Ken Wood, who sadly died during World War II. When deciding the recipient of this award, the general committee takes into account performances on the cricket field, sportsmanship and other services rendered to the club.

The winner of the Ken Wood Cup this year is David Allan. Congratulations to David for his outstanding commitment and service to the club this year.

The Stephen Peak Trophy is a new award introduced two seasons ago. Stephen played cricket for Northbridge, was our Club Treasurer and Vice Captain of our A-Reserve Grade Team in 2005/06. Stephen tragically passed away in the off-season at the age of 33. This award is in memory of Stephen and his commitment on and off the field. The award is designed to recognise the Players Player – voted by the players on a 3-2-1 basis, week in week out. Any member, in any team of the club can win this award.

This 3-2-1 votes are scaled based on the number of games played by each team. This is to compensate for our One Day sides, which play a significantly larger number of games each season compared to our other teams.

A Grade Captains Report – Mitch Nicholls

Well, if you just look at the ladder, and the fact that we made it through the season without a win, then you would be judging this season to be a failure. However, as skipper for the A Grade side I think that this couldn’t be further from the truth! From the start of the season when we were struggling to get 11 guys willing to have a crack on turf, to the end of the season when we had more than 11 to pick from, it was a rebuilding year for us and one that does put the future of A Grade at Northbridge in good stead.

The first game of the season was an exciting one. The team gathered at Castle Cove, eagerly waiting to get out on the pitch and having a crack. Winning the toss (something I did good at for the season as a whole!) I went against my bowling instinct and sent the lads out to bat. 72 overs later we had scored more than 200 runs (the only time we did that all season) and were very full of confidence heading into the second week.

As was a typical event of the season, we turned up the second week and found ourselves chasing leather with far too much full-pitched bowling that saw the ball being dispatched at regular intervals. The second game saw much of the same with the bowling, with arch rivals Cammeray enjoying their time on a docile pitch and us being a man down due to unknown reasons that we will not go into here. For the rest of the season we really struggled to score runs, which obviously in cricket you need to do! It’s not that the team doesn’t have the skill to do so, but this was certainly a season where experience was gained that will be more useful in future seasons.

It was during the representative matches where I was having a chat with another team member about the struggles we were having to get 11 players each week. The funny thing was that he was having the same problem with his team, only probably worse than we were having. An idea was hatched down at Marrickville Oval where we could possibly bring the sides together and play out the season. I remember thinking it could be quite fanciful, but you never know. And with that, Andre and the rest of the boys from the KCC A Grade side joined us in December. This gave us a squad of over 14 players to select from, as well as enough depth to cover for our travelling players who seem to want to travel in summer (Rav!). It’s always a danger to bring in new personalities, but the fact that for some strange reason I got along really with Andre as it was, it was a seamless transition which saw us co-captain the side for the remainder of the season. Just a pity that this arrangement doesn’t cover the captains report! Andre took charge of the fielding, whilst I got to do all the behind the scenes work, which did work out well for us despite crumbling in our last match of the season in a game that we really should have won.

This was also the first season we introduced the fines regime within the A Grade side. Fines were issued for dropped catches, ducks, golden ducks, run outs (Rav!), turning up late to a game as well as some discretionary ones thrown in for good measure. Over $200 of fines was tallied up, and the team will need to get together at some stage soon to go through each of these.

With a season with no victories, there were still some standout performances. From Andre’s 5fa at ELS Upper in the final match of the season, to Rav’s 2 half centuries, to Andre’s belligerent knock against the eventual comp winners of 54* where he absolutely refused to get out whilst the rest of us struggled around him, to Pete Collins and Nic Savage saving the day at Marrickville against the Gypsies when it looked like we could go down outright. The goose of the year award definitely would have to go to Rav, for his ability to middle the ball to mid-, call for two, without realising that the fieldsman had the ball and he was hilariously run out. It’s not a moment we will let him forget moving forwards.

The obvious lowlight was the team being rolled for 32 (thankfully not on my watch as I was away!) on a wet deck at Willoughby, but I think a lot of hard lessons were learned, and the team is steeled for a bigger and better 2016-17 season. B Grade Report – Divyesh Thakker

15 matches, 6 wins, 1 draw, 8 losses. Overall, not one of the more convincing performances from a team that looked much more promising on paper. With a shaky start to the season, where many of our key players, started to drop out, we were left at the bottom of the table after 5 matches, with drawing a hard fought match, winning one and losing three, one, after being 125/1 chasing 189. The famous Northbridge collapse struck, and we were bowled out for 137. Our only win coming against a C-grade side.

After being at the bottom of the table, came more bad news. Lakshay had to go to India. Despite that, we stringed together 3 memorable performances, to make it the best phase of the season. Firstly, we played the table toppers (at that time), who were still unbeaten. With just having 8 on the first day, it was an important toss to win. The toss was won, and we set off on a blocking marathon. An early wicket didn’t help, but in the end scoring 150 with 8 people off 68 overs is a great effort. 10 more overs were bowled and we had them at 24/3. The next day, was better as we had 10 players. We picked up another 5 wickets for 29 runs, with Naynesh picking up the leading run-scorer of the season for 1 (his first innings where he didn’t make a 50 plus score). 53/8 to 123/8, they slogged and edged. But fortunately a couple of wickets and they were kept to 126, as we registered our first win against a B-Grade side.

In our second match of this amazing phase, we had a C-grade side to overcome. Having them, 80/4 we were very pleased, before we let them off the hook, to get another 123 runs in 21 overs and just losing 2 wickets, before declaring to give us a difficult 6 overs to face. An early blow as I got out for a duck, second ball. And the other opener getting out for 13, leaving us 22/2 at stumps. On the second day, we lost another early wicket, before Rishiraj (72), Jazib (56 n.o.) and Simant (23) strung together a couple of good 50+ partnerships to get us the win.

The third match (one dayer) came against North Sydney Leagues, with Lakshay back from India. On a huge ground with tall grass, we won the toss and chose to bat. We slowly crawled to 125 all out. Against last year’s premiers it was never going to be enough. However, with Smithy leading the way and getting 3 wickets, with support from Naynesh, Lakshay and myself we kept them to 91/9 in 34 overs. Needing 35 from 36 with 1 wicket in hand, they played great shots to bring it down to 7 off 15, before Jazib, bowled their no.11, and completed a brilliant feat. In his first 3 matches for us, he took the winning catch in the first one, scored the winning run in the second and picked up the winning wicket in the third.

We had moved up to 4th place with that win, before Naynesh and I had to leave for India. Without our presence the boys put up a brilliant fight, but unfortunately losing all 3 matches. A special mention should go to Lakshay Kumar, who got 6/42 to get the opposition from 48/0 to 63/8, but once again we struggled to close out an innings as they got to 91 (the target) with two wickets to spare.

With Naynesh and myself back, there were 3 rounds left. First came a 2 dayer against Kirribilli. One of the most disgraceful pieces of umpiring helped them get to 203 on day 1. On day 2, we had a stiff chase, a quick fire 46 from myself, and a magnificent 100 from Lakshay, and the other chipping in mature innings, we overcame the target with ease. Then came a disappointing loss against North Sydney Leagues. After that loss, a curious lakshay called up West Pymble and asked them their result as we needed them to beat North Shore White in their game. A 5 run victory for West Pymble made our last game against North Shore White a must win game by an appropriate margin. A win only would not do. This was probably the best match of the season. We all were on a mission. Naynesh and Lakshay started out on a positive note as we had them 1/2 in 4 overs in a one dayer. The only run coming off a wide. They crawled their way up to 111 all out, an innings in which I heard one of the best sledges, came by Rishabh from behind the stumps, “Someone call him an uber, he can’t drive” as their opener played and missed. It even put a smile on the square leg umpires face! In the innings break, the calculators were out and calculations showed us that we had to win this game by at least 2 wickets to spare. Despite losing Lakshay early, we comfortably (with 7 wickets in Page 24 of 57 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org hand) crossed the finish line. The winning runs were brought up with a six, as Northbridge B-grade entered the semis.

Our semis, didn’t start off well as North Sydney Leagues were 138/1. However, a hat trick and tight bowling then had them bowled out for 221. With 1 over left to face, it was safely negotiated by Jazib. The next day, we were 120/0, with both our openers getting half centuries. But, a couple of bad shots from them and then by Simant and myself, had us 141 for 4. Still looking solid, as Naynesh and Mohammad leading the chase calmly. Then came the most shameful and disappointing little phase of cricket, where the umpire made 3 wrong decisions in a row! First, Naynesh lbw, a clear inside-edge that was heard by the people in the stands. Then Rishabh and Mohammad quickly put up 40 runs, before, Mohammad was given lbw, to a ball that hit his thai pad! And then Rishabh, caught behind, where clear daylight was seen in between bat and ball, but as the umpire panicked and gave it out, Rishabh stood there for 30 seconds gutted by the decision! An image that will never vanish from our hearts! A further 6 runs were scored with the last 3 wickets as we were bowled out for 199.

A brilliant season, where we fought our way back, to make the semis and then falling just short of a target that would have been reached if not for a panicking umpire, and false appealing! Couldn’t have been prouder of the boys!

C Reserve Captain’s report – Chris Olver

As many of you know this was my 1st year as Captain. and what a year it has been. from Round 1 right through to the finals, I don’t think I have ever had such a steep learning curve.

With a mix of new members to the club and old members from across different grades it was always going to be an interesting year. Even more interesting with penalty fines applying to all games.

So where to start. Round 1… Personally a bundle of nerves and a mental plan for the day we were all eager to get on the pitch. This turned out to be a victory for the Bridge with a forfeit from the other team because they didn’t show up, two hours’ net practice and an early mark in the pub the celebrate. This captain malarkey is easy I thought.

Round 2, we headed off to the mud oval aka Wellington Oval. This was the first time as a team we all ran onto the field together. Batting first we saw Steve Plummer’s definition of leave. Effectively how hard can I hit the ball out of the park, Johnny Christo showing us that pre-season training isn’t required to score a quick fire 68 and that C grade has one spectacular talent of having an all mighty batting collapse. Finishing with 170 (about par) we were defeated by a steady chase from Centrals scoring 173-3 with a few overs to go. Charlie O’Loan picked up his first wicket for the club by literally trying to eat the ball. Maybe being a captain isn’t that easy.

Round 3, things can only get better right? It was C grade’s first 2-day game of the year. Well that was until we were playing against the top of B grade (the grade above). Their captain has played A grade for his whole career was now playing us, a C grade team. But we had the luxury of Matt Gabb and Karthik Rangasamy (Special K) playing their first game for the Bridge.

Matt Gabb was thrown straight into the deep end by opening the bowling with the A Grade captain opening the batting. This challenge didn’t last long with Matt being hit over his head 3rd ball of the game for a 6. Oh blimey I thought.

They later declared for 331/1 with Gabb getting his first wicket for the club. Revenge was had on Mr A Grade captain (who finished on 168 not out), Mitch Whyman showed him his rugby prowess. It was C grade’s turn to bat. This turned into another superb Northbridge collapse with a total of 55. We now had to bat the rest of the second day to not be beaten outright. Superb innings from Webster and Sarkas to do exactly that with 26* and 25* not out to save the day.

Round 4 was a wash out but it did see Mitch Whyman return to the score card picking up his 1st wicket of the year with a rippa of a Yorker.

Round 5 was met with possible ramifications. There was potential that the losing team was going to be demoted to D grade. So this could be our first and last game against Kirribilli Cricket Club for the year. Day 1 was a wash out so we reverted to 1-day game. Bowling them out for 146 with Benny Foster picking 3 wickets (all his first for the club) we were thinking this was going to be a simple run chase.

Going into bat Benny Foster scored 64 runs (his first 50, 6 and 4 ever in cricket) for us to fall sort with 135. Another NCC C grade batting collapse. This game was met with more controversy with Benny Foster being accused of being caught behind. This wouldn’t be last we ever heard of this.

Round 6 was another game against a B grade side. This was the only game we lost outright all season, On a high from the last round, Benny Foster picked up another 3 wickets and Karthik Rangasamy showing us what he can do with the bat scoring 57 runs and showing how to demolish there bowling attack. Unfortunately, this was another spectacular NCC batting collapse putting an end to that. Page 32 of 57 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org

Round 7. One of the top highlights for C grade. Jason Huang scoring a quick fire 30, Kartick and Greenless both with contributions of 20 each we were left with two wickets to go and only 134 on the card. With Olver and O’Loan walking out to bat for the 10th wicket, Gabb and Kartick (opening bowlers) started to warm up and Jepp began padding up to wicket keep. All assuring us they had total confidence in us. Macquarie University smelling blood in the water, sledging and smiles all around quickly changed over the next 20 overs. With Olver and O’Loan sledging each other (not the opposition) as they put on another 40 runs and used up precious time. For anyone who was there. Comedy gold seem doesn’t cover it. Macquarie University are now no longer as cherpy.

Bridge finished up on 171. With a few overs left in the day, Maq Uni captain was so confident, he was happy to mention that they were not going to lose any wickets as they walked out. 8 overs later and finishing the day 3/30. Gabb and Rangasamy caused hell with the ball hooping around. Gabb scored his first 5fer and Kartick picked up 3 wickets (his first for the club). It was the first real victory for C grade.

Round 8, Chris Jepp filled in as captain for it to only be an extremely close defeat but another controversial game against Kirribilli CC. Comedy highlight, O’Loan taking a screaming catch on the boundary while he removed his lit cigarette from his mouth. Disappointment came from not being able to find the cigarette after he took the catch. Round 9, against Old Ignatians. Falling short by 19 runs. Runs by Johnny Christo, Andrew Greenless, Benny Foster, Karthik Rangasamy and 21 runs by the skipper (who hit his 1st 6 for the club, with his eyes open). Olver Senior also had a starring role with Olver and Olver as the 10th and 11th wicket.

Round 10, the Jason Huang game. Smashing 74 in quick succession… Unbelievable as he walks down to the wicket to their opening bowler. Johnny Christo scoring 48 runs with the Bridge setting a score of 213 runs. This was our second victory by bowling them out for 127 runs. Mitch Nicholls (a random fill in) getting his 100th wicket for the club (could have been 105 wickets with the amount of drops) and Alex Davey (12th man) getting a critical run out from the boundary.

Round 11, Kirribilli CC again. We lost that game in another controversial fashion. LBW wasn’t a rule due to Benny Foster not walking from a few rounds before. Oh well. Highlights was Gabb bowling 19 overs straight for 27 runs. He was like a Duracell Bunny.

Round 12, Old Ignatians, we fell 20 runs short with Pete Collins scoring 41 and Cam Reed taking 2 wickets (his first for C grade).

Round 13, a must win for finals. We bowled Centrals out for 69. Wickets from (4) Gabb, (3) Foster and (2) Reed. An amazing performance. David Allan and Ryan Clarke filled in as 10 and 11 and performed out of their skin.

Round 14, final round and it’s against a B grade side. The famous game where Benny Foster scores 20 runs to proclaim to the changing room that he was saving the game by scoring .5 runs an over. A game that as a team was a low moment. A game to forget.

Either way we made it finals.

Semi Finals. We met Old Ignatians. While in the end it didn’t go to plan with us finishing up short on runs there was some highlights with Dale Webster who all season had bowled spin claiming he can bowl some pace for once. Getting the final wickets, he got 3 wickets for 1 run of 2.3 overs with 2 maidens. Thanks to all the Northbridge members who came down to watch as well.

So in summary, a great year with many surprises, highlights and at the end of it I made a great bunch of mates. Thanks to everyone for your contributions on and off the field with special thanks to Christo and Jason for your captaincy advice and Chris Jepp with the gloves. We may have not won the competition but what a great year it has been.

Page 33 of 57 Northbridge Cricket Club www.northbridgecricketclub.org

Final point, stats:  2030 runs scored  84 wickets taken  40 Dropped catches  3 Run outs  16 ducks  $495 of fines

I look forward to hopefully playing with you all next year with a few less dropped catches and batting collapses.

D Grade (blue) Captains Report – Steve Morrison

Recently I bought a ladder so that I could climb on my roof and clear the gutters. The problem was I couldn’t’ work out which end of the ladder was the top. That was much like D Grade Blue’s season. We played our entire season aiming for the top the ladder, only we were looking at the wrong end of it and ended up topping the ladder from the wrong end.

So overall we had a great season. With only about 3 or 4 exceptions we managed to work together to get the team a win, that is, get the other team a win. We apologise unreservedly for those few failures where we somehow stumbled ourselves into a win.

Highlights of the season included a few 5fers, notably by D. Welsh and J. Duff. The famous author, Jeffery Duffery with his upcoming book available at $49:95 at all good bookstalls took us to a very tight win in the derby against Northbridge Red. In that same match Jonas Berglund hit his maiden fifty and a massive 4 to win the match. Berglund and Jon “Neo” Anderson formed a great opening partnership as the season progressed.

Most improved player had to go to Jonas. Most improved player for turning up on time went to Abi. Fletcher, Parker, Boy George, The Allan Brothers (or however those two are related) and Ian Chatswood Willoughby all worked hard as committed team members and helped kept our spirits high. I don’t mean they put the team in a good mood, I mean they drank spirits before during and after matches in an attempt to stimulate the team mood.

Overall we had a great season and to keep this speech short I’m going to just list the players who had standout performances in alphabetical order as follows. Thankyou.

D Grade (red) Captains Report – Peter Stankovic

The 2015/16 season for D Red Grade hybrid team began in Round 2. Round 1 started with six teams in the grade and when North Shore pulled out before the start of the competition, Northbridge agreed to include another side. Hence the birth of the Red side. Round 1 against the Northbridge Blue side was therefore played on January 2nd in the New Year at the Northbridge oval.

Our first match, Round 2, began with 9 players and this was the pattern for the next few matches. I thought it would be difficult to be competitive if we couldn’t ever field a full side. But as the season progressed the situation improved and I also realised the side had some genuine talent and that there is potential for this group in the future.

Unfortunately, we had casualties during the season. Chris Hadlow could only play a few matches due to illness. Frank McLoughlin injured himself playing soccer and wasn’t available in 2016 and Zeehan Muhammad transferred to another club which included his friends. However, as the season wore on we were able to attract a number of fine cricketers to join us.

Highlights:

 Subhash Swami’s 5/15 in Round 3 against Cammeray to have the opposition out for 48 in their first innings.  Michael Stankovic’s 143 against Northbridge Blue to help the team score 306.  Alan Dwyer’s consecutive fifties on 2nd and 9th January 2016, hitting 61 then following up with 70.  Alexander Stankovic’s 5/36 in Round 11 against Northbridge.  A great team effort to defeat NS Leagues in Round 12. Michael Stankovic’ 61 and Ben Blumberg’s 58 in the batting supported by Rahual Mishra and Matt Lording’s three wickets each and Alexander and Michael Stankovic both chipping in with two wickets a piece.  Alex Johnston’s thumping 55 not out against Chatswood Gypsies in the last round to almost get the team over the line when we were looking cooked.  Fine bowling from Matt Lording, David Medcalf and Rahul Mishra.  Excellent fielding from Jay Swami, Francis McLoughlin and Ryan Clarke.  Dane Clarke’s enthusiasm and consistent support of all players in the field.

During the season we had a number of close games which could have gone either way but unfortunately for us, it went the wrong way. Maybe next time it’ll be our time.

I would like to thank all participants who made the season enjoyable, both on and off the field.
