President’s Report

If you were to ask anyone interested in cricket in Newcastle, at the start of the season, to list the clubs they thought would fight out the semi-finals in the top four grades I doubt that we would have rated a mention on very many lists. However we managed to come up with the best result this club has ever had by making the play-offs in all four of those top grades and we were runners up in the club championship for the first time ever. It is history now that rain robbed us of springing even more upsets but we should all be really proud of what we have achieved since last October. I am very proud that I can say that I was President of the club when this achievement was attained and also delighted to have achieved it with such a great group of people. I took on the position of President four years ago with the intention of trying to the club how the players wanted it run and I can honestly say that every decision that has been made during that time was made with the players interests uppermost in our thoughts. I find it very satisfying that we have had the most successful season in the club’s history, after being told by former committee people that the club could never be successful if it were run like that. This season saw the club celebrate the 50th anniversary and the reunion dinner was an outstanding success. Thank you to Lisa Peterson, Gordon Goffet and John Hobson for their efforts in organizing the night. Seeing all the old faces again, reliving the good, the bad, and the ugly times was fantastic and something the club should capitalize on with further events in the seasons ahead. We had the pleasure of Richard Hindley’s company this season and he was a true gentleman, on and off the field. I really enjoyed having him around the place and hope to see him again in the not too distant future. Congratulations to Gordon Pratten for his excellent season with the ball, to James Lorang and Anthony Postol for their outstanding seasons with the bat and to Anthony Bellamy for his fantastic 8/39. Congratulations also to Scott Montgomery on a fine first season with CB’s and to my old mate Zoe for finally making it to, and holding his place, in first grade. Also congratulations to Richard, Daniel and Craig on their hat tricks. Thank you to Col Wilson for stocking the canteen, running training, cleaning sheds and picking teams (and you all thought he was just Gav’s dad). Thanks to Lisa Peterson for giving her time as “Assistant” Secretary. My biggest thanks go my wife Megan (and the kids) for putting up with me at the computer or at meetings or on the phone most nights of the week. Thanks Anthony, Jason and James for giving their time all season. I have enjoyed my time as President however the drop off rate of people from committee positions the last couple of seasons has been disappointing and has meant that I have had to fill more roles than I believe is fair for one person. This situation must change or the club is going to find itself struggling to find volunteers. I’m not ready to take up lawn bowls and will enjoy trying to continue my latest incarnation as a first grader next season. I’ll see you all at the AGM and then at training in September. 1st Grade Captain’s Report The First XI finished the season in 4th position, which was a commendable performance having finished 7th last season. It is our best result since we reached the semi-finals in 1996-97. At the beginning of the season we had to overcome several setbacks. Five players from last season's squad were missing, Brett Kneller (illness), Jason Rumianek, Stuart Chadban, Gavin Wilson and Simon Moore (all unavailable). This put a great strain on our depth, in particular Gavin and Simon being our leading taker and run scorer respectively. On the positive side, to bolster our ranks, Craig Tselembis returned from a season of hammering the C & S A-Grade attacks and Richard Hindley of Havant C.C. (Southern League - Hampshire) was looking to make his mark "Down Under". Simon joined us again having missed the first month of the season. Fortunately, he gradually regained his zest for playing and it wasn't long before this extremely talented cricketer was making valuable runs for his team. Simon again was our top batsman, combined with his wicket-keeping skills, reconfirmed his status as one of Newcastle's elite cricketers. Jason Vero put together another solid season of , the highlight being his v. Stockton. Paul Coleman shaped well during the first half of the season in the opener's role but unfortunately he succumbed to a knee injury and was absent for the remainder of the season. For the latter part of the season Matthew Maher and the skipper formed a reliable opening pairing which saw consistent starts to set up the for the team. In the attack, Richard made a great impact with his off-spinners and was a valuable replacement for Gavin Wilson. His hat-trick in the opening round v. Waratah was no fluke as he consistently troubled batsmen and snared important . By his own admission, his batting didn't reach his own expectations apart from his very entertaining display in the 2nd innings of the Merewether match. I must say that he was a great asset to the side, a team player and I appreciated his thoughtful outlook on the game. He will be very welcome at the club if he has the opportunity to visit Australia again. Wayne Peterson led the pace attack well, often without luck but enjoyed a full season when he was injury free. He received excellent support from Anthony Walshe, who also didn't always get the rewards that he deserved. James Kneller had another full season in the first XI, his medium pacers were very consistent and he was often asked to do the tough work, on occasions such as the Ham-Wicks and Stockton matches he was outstanding. His batting deserted him early season but he fought back and with renewed confidence made an impact with the bat. Jason Fenwick, having made his debut in the last game of last season, established himself in the side with some creditable bowling until injury in February finished his season . . . a little more experience and self -confidence will see Jason develop into a fine all-rounder. Brad McLennan replaced him and did very well with a couple of whole -hearted, enthusiastic showings. Even our president, Brett Meek, rejuvenated his career with some inspirational batting in the middle-order toward the end of the season. The highlight of the season was our outright victory at home to Stockton.(spell check, please). This win really put us on track for the semi-finals , our first outright win in nine seasons, where we totally outplayed our opposition. Declaring late on Day 1 with our total over 300 we claimed four wickets before stumps. On Day 2, their first innings was wrapped up quickly and then their second attempt was again in tatters until their tail prolonged the issue somewhat - a tremendous effort from all our bowlers as it was a seriously flat pitch. Rain proved to be our nemesis with our semi-final appearance a non-event. A disappointing end to the season for us all as finals cricket is a great opportunity that provides players an added incentive as well as valuable experience. On behalf of the team sincere thanks must go to Col Wilson and Rhelma Willis for their help and commitment throughout the season. My thanks also go to all the players that represented our club in its 50th year, for their efforts and the spirit in which our matches were played. I enjoyed this season immensely, the hard work, the humour and seeing the players achieving - and so, next October can't come quickly enough as I'm sure that we will build on this season and improve our place on the "ladder" (refer Zoe). 2nd Grade Captain’s Report Well what can you say? We had a side that could go all the way and we would have if it weren’t for the weather. I was fortunate enough to be appointed 2nd grade captain after Meekers was selected in 1st grade and I was honoured to be given the opportunity. As for the season itself, it was a consistently good one as we had more wins than losses and not to mention two splendid outright wins. The season was full of funny and enjoyable moments and just a sprinkling of not so good moments. There were some outstanding individual efforts throughout the season. Our bowlers, Bert, Fubar, Coxy and not to forget the lovely Zoe always played above the call of duty whether it was with the bat or ball. Who could forget Zoe and Bert’s memorable and match saving partnership against Belmont. Being robbed of victory by the rain in that match may have been an indication of things to come. The young players like Betty, Elko, Syd, Rusty and, Mr Consistency himself, Homer always blended together to keep our side very competitive. I reckon we have a very bright future in our club and it would be great to see all our young players pad up again next season. I thoroughly enjoyed my new role as captain of CB’s 2nd grade and I would love to be appointed again next season because I feel we can take the next step and grab the glory and mantle of No 1. 3rd Grade Captain’s Report It was both a very pleasing and frustrating season for 3rd grade. Pleasing because we made the top 4, frustrating because the weather robbed us of an opportunity to win the competition. I thought we had a strong chance of doing just that. I must admit on a personal level I wasn’t happy with my form this year, however I enjoyed my cricket more than I have for a long time. I enjoyed it because the club as a whole had a successful year and I enjoyed the season because of the quality of players that I played with, especially in 3rd grade, where I saw the future of the Cardiff Boolaroo. Young gentlemen such as Chris (Mushy) Young, Scott Montgomery, Aaron Gray & Scott Jacobs who I believe all have the potential to be first graders in the next few years. Chris looked the goods with both bat and ball. A couple of times this year, when things were getting out of hand, I threw the ball to Mushy who delivered with a big wicket. The game against Newcastle City stands out in my mind. When City looked like they might chase down our runs I gave the ball to Mushy who proceeded to bowl their captain with a wrongun to win the game for us. His batting improved this year also and his timimng is quite exquisite. Scott Montgomery is the best young wicketkeeper/batsman I’ve seen at our club since Simon Moore. He will score a mountain of runs and take many dismissals for our club and both 1st and 2nd grade keepers had better look out. This kid can play. Aaron Gray had the difficult job of opening the innings, he is especially strong on the offside and has a textbook cover drive. This was a learning season for Aaron and I’m certain he will score a lot more runs next year. I only saw Scott Jacobs for one game this season but I quickly realised what Anthony Postol had been saying all along about this young bloke. He was quick and in 6 overs did not bowl anything on the leg side which I thought was tremendous control for someone so young. Also pleasing was the way the more experienced player performed. Gordon Pratten had another outstanding season with both bat and ball. Jason Gregory’s is an inspiration and he is a fine example for all in the club. One catch at second slip by Jason was like a Mark Waugh flier. Wade Keft showed tremendous character. After being dropped to 4th grade he came back to 3rd grade to become our best batsman by the end of the season. I was particularly pleased by the way he went about his cricket this year. Richard Green started the season as a batsman and ended the season as a bowler. He has a big heart and never stops putting in. I think Richard is a better batsman than his figures show and I hope he doesn’t lose hope in his ability because I think with the proper application he can go all the way.Adam Maher improved a great deal also and he is a deceptively quick bowler. Scott Elkovich fulfilled his potential this year and deserved his place in 2nd grade. Scott’s 70 against Stockton was a lovely innings and to be truthful should have been a hundred. A lot of people don’t realise that despite his notorious one liners and his silly little giggle he has a very sharp cricket mind and I believe he has the potential to be a very good catain. Special mention must go to Scott Richardson and Mark Snuggs, whose support I could not have done without. In summary I believe we had the team that could have won the competition and we were unlucky not to be able to prove it. There’s always next year and I look forward to playing with you all again next season. Jason Foster

11 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 1999/2000

4th Grade Captain’s Report Whilst standing in front of the wet wicket at Lynn Oval on a rain soaked Saturday morning in March I lamented the rain and the misfortune which it beset upon myself and ten others. It not only washed away a weekend of cricket, but also the chance for us to stake our claim for a final berth and a possible premiership. How lucky Wallsend were, how very lucky!! My thoughts wandered back to the preceding months which had brought so many triumphs. In that time I witnessed a group of individuals bond together into a team which personified values such as mateship, commitment and an unyielding resolve. These qualities were shown over and over again during the 13 rounds which pitted us against opposition which was maybe more experienced, but not as committed. In that time there were many individual performances of note but the most pleasing part was that every player who stepped onto the field wearing the mighty rose upon their chest contributed in some way. At no stage did anyone give less than their full commitment, this is all a captain could or should ask. The true nature of a team and its commitment to each other is best shown in times of adversity. One such time was on the hottest day of the summer by far as we clashed with Belmont. Walking out to toss I was greeted by a lightning fast outfield and nothing short of a road for a wicket. Knowing fully my past ineptitude regarding the toss I immediately started praying for a miracle. It was time wasted, the Belmont skipper took all of 0.01 seconds to say “We’ll bat” and for the first time I feared for my life at having to tell a pack of hungover 18 year olds we were fielding in 39 degree heat. After being slogged all over the park for 77 overs by some very lucky batsmen we faced a target of over 260. The following week was very different; the pitch was wet, the outfield slow and humidity high. At 1/12 we were up against it but after rain and a fighting opposition we were eventual winners. At no stage did anyone give up and even after 65 overs in blistering heat the talk was positive and support for each other still strong. This was a truly great team effort. This team talked and laughed its way through the season. Never before have I seen a player cry on the field as Adam Maher did for well over 5 minutes because of the stupidity of teammates. (Good work Roy). This was not a rare moment. Every week there was an incident that brought smiles from all parts of the ground. Each was relived back at the RSL over one, two and at times three beers, much to the enjoyment of those present. Most of all the character of the boys shone through. On more than one occasion the team was in trouble, but we never gave up and on each occasion the boys triumphed. The maturity of the team was amazing even though at times I looked around the ground and realised I was the second oldest in the team, a veteran at just 21 years. However time and time again the guys outthought and outplayed the opposition. Considering it has been5 years since 4ths made the top 4 the future looks bright for the club. Well done boys. 5th Grade Captain’s Report 5th grade performed really well this year without really having a realistic chance of making the semis with the top 4 teams predictable before the season even kicked off. While we were able to give theses top teams a run for their money we were relying on upsets. The highlight of the season was playing “home” games at No1 Sportsground and Harker Oval. Craig Wilcher certainly thought Harker Oval suited him perfectly, achieving a hat trick while captaining the side in my absence. Another highlight was the match against the favourites for the title (for the last goodness knows how many years) Merewether at a ground somewhere over near the Uni when we had them reeling to be all out for a measly 73 with Scott Nowak taking 5 wickets. We were well on our way to knocking over the target when a shower of rain filled the concrete wicket making it look more like a swimming pool. The first chance to beat Merewether in living memory ruined by the weather. Obviously 5ths set the scene for the rest of the club later in the season. Sorry fellas. Individual achievements were dominated by James Lorang, Scott Nowak and Anthony Bellamy. James performances with the bat were outstanding, scoring 576 runs at 72 with two centuries. His innings of 149 at No6 Sportsground was amazing to watch and the way he went from 88 to 118 in one over sure made a mockery of the nervous nineties. Scott performed brilliantly with both bat and ball. He scored a century and pushed James all the way for the , only stumbling in the last few games. He also did really well when asked to bowl, finishing the season with the second highest number of wickets (24 at 12.79). Anthony Bellamy excelled in his first season for the club taking 20 wickets at 9.95 and turning in the best bowling figures for the club when he too 8/39 against Belmo nt. Craig Wilcher was another who had a fantastic allround season and stood in as captain several times. Neville Gregory deserves special mention, as does Jeff Huntley. They were both there whenever we were struggling for numbers and also took it on the chin if we asked them to sit out if we were blessed with more than the required eleven. We had a young side who were mainly interested in enjoying each other’s company on a Saturday afternoon. The fact that we won a few games and held out hope of sneaking into the top 4 until quite late in the season was an added bonus. Blokes like Woody, Dan Taylor, Mark Curran, Brad Lynch, Toddy and Scott Grooms made enjoying our cricket easy as they laughed, batted, bowled and (and dropped eh Woody) their way through the season. We had lots of fun and I hope we can all get together again next season and give the Citys and Merewethers of 5th grade a run for their money. Brad Sommerville
