Update No. 210 – Final Day and 99 and all that:

Congratulations to Suburbs New Lynn who reached 100 points whilst we, Parnell, finished one behind on 99. Suburbs NL therefore captured the Hedley Howarth Trophy and we have to be content with the Allan Thompson Memorial Cup for runner-up. Some gnashing of teeth when we finished just 1 point behind but, looking back, we weren’t helped by having a draw in Round 1. (North Shore 292/9, Parnell 87/4) and a disaster in 3. (Cornwall 103/10, Parnell 84/10). Covid’s Level 3 cost us Day 1. of Round 6. against bottom of the Table, Grafton United whilst Suburbs defeated Takapuna outright on Day 2. but, in reality, it was Round 3. that scuppered us. Ninety Nine – the Dreaded Number One short of 100 - the points Suburbs New Lynn amassed through the 2020/21 Season and Parnell left on 99. And dismissal at 99 – the score dreaded by all batsmen, a being the acknowledged pinnacle of success! But many have been dismised for 99, Ben Stokes one of the most recent in the 2nd ODI for England vs India. And ’s 299 vs Sri Lanka is remembered better than most of 300. Nervous nineties – , the great left hande Australian batsman, in the 1912 Boxing Day Test at Melbourne was dismissed for 99 and then, in the next Test at Adelaide, was out for 98 and 97. Hill scored six Test 90s – 96, 99, 98, 97, 91* and 98. In his 49 Tests Hill scored 3412 runs at 39.41 – 7 x 100s, highest 191. Bobby Simpson, another great Aussie, made his Test debut in December 1957 and in almost 7 years hit two 90s but no 100s before cracking the ton in style – 311 vs England at Old Trafford, July 1964. He finally retired in 1978, in 62 Tests having scored 4869 at 46.81 and hit 10 x 100s – 2 being over 200 and his highest, 311.

Men’s Premier Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy – 7th and Final Round: [NOTE: At start of Day 1. – Parnell in 3rd place – 2 points behind North Shore and 15 behind leader, Suburbs NL. Round 7. Parnell vs Papatoetoe, North Shore vs Grafton United, Suburbs NL vs Auckland University]

20 & 27 March Parnell vs Papatoetoe at Papatoetoe Rec. 1. PAPATOETOE 259/10 (57.1) L Clark 95 (78), L Istead 84 (54), & 249/10 (55.1) S Setia 121* (165) 1st Innings 2nd Innings Dean van Deventer 12 0 70 1 8 1 35 1 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 9 1 40 1 Josh Fisher 12 0 73 4 Lockie Ferguson 8 1 40 3 Jack Parsons 12 4 40 3 4 0 33 0 Nikith Perera 12 5 30 1 9 1 48 2 Andy Lane 1 0 8 0 Aniket Parikh 3 0 26 1 12 2 33 1 Kartikey Trevedi 12 2 16 1

PARNELL 283/6 dec. (46) Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 36 (52), Andy Lane 36 (42),Aniket Parikh 112* (101), Brad Rodden 25 (26), D Bhatti 2/39 (9) & 227/2 (34.4) Ben Rae 124* (111), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 17 (28), Andy Lane 68 (65), Aniket Parikh 8 (5) RESULT: Parnell won outright by 8

DAY 1. We had begun by skittling the first 9 Papatoetoe batsmen for 170 but allowed their 10th to add 89 – 259/10. By stumps we were 240/5 with Aniket on 83 and 1st innings points looked assured. Suburbs were struggling against AUCC. Just the faintest glimmer of hope. An outright to us, losses to North Shore and to Suburbs – the Trophy could still be retained???

DAY 2. Changes from Day 1. – Lockie, recalled to the Black Caps, and Ganesh were replaced by Josh Fisher and Kartikey Trevedi. Kartikey is a leg spinner who joined from Sydney where he played 2nd Grade. For our Reserves he has had a very good season taking 28 wickets at 16.60. 1st innings points were quickly secured as was Aniket’s100. Then Captain Flynn declared – 283/6. From here, Craig’s photos can do the talking:

Aniket on his way to 112* and the declaration and receiving congratulations on his ton from Dean Papatoetoe, in their 2nd innings, looked for runs from the outset but lost wickets regularly though opener, Shane Setia, carried his bat for 121* - a masterly knock!

Capt. Flynn’s Aunt Sally carried out the drinks during Papatoetoe’s innings Kartikey Trevedi on debut for the Prems – very tidy 12 1 16 1

With a minimum of 40 overs left in the day. Our target was 226 for the outright and the possibility of retaining the Hedley Howarth Trophy as AUCC had lead Suburbs NL on the 1st innings. However, AUCC had declared at 237/3 so Suburbs, though losing 3/36, were hell bent in knocking off the 256 to gain the title. Flynn and Ben got our 2nd innings underway and picked up singles with great regularity and we were going at 5 per over when Flynn was lbw to Plummer at 57. Wih Andy joining Ben we never looked back – both were very assured, not in the least rushed or bustled but the runs came at a good pace. Five an over became 6 or even better but no risks were taken –a succession of powerful straight drives in the V plus cuts and pulls when the ball was dropped short.

Ben Rae (left) and Andy Lane – a superb partnership of 156 off 130 balls set us up beautifully for the outright win

A truly great partnership between Ben and Andy and it was a great surprise when the latter skied one a was for 68. No alarums Ben continued on his way, secured his ton and, with Aniket, knocked off the remaining runs with ease.

Ben Rae, 124* off 111 balls and match won outright, leaving the field to applause from Papatoetoe and to be greeted by Andy (left foreground), his partner for most of the innings

Then the news – Suburbs NL had knocked off the 256 needed to beat AUCC outright and so captured the Hedley Howarth Trophy by just 1 point, 100 to our 99.

Women’s Premier Grade – Prichard Cup – Round 11 – Final for 3rd /4th .

20 & 27 March vs Eden Roskill at Shore Road Reserve 1. A 9th wicket stand then looked dangerous taking the score from 256/8 but Josh ended that at 281 and Prashant took the 10th wicket 1 later. Game called off soon after – just time for Will and Matt to get a little practice for 2021/22. Congratulations to Captain Giacomo and the Team on a very successful season! Auckland Grammar School (with 6 Parnell Players) is Winner Of the National Junior Secondary Schoolboy’s Tournament

Played in Palmerston North last week, Auckland Grammar School won all 5 games by very comfortable margins. No fewer than 6 Parnell lads were in the Grammar team – Pawan Kharel (who was named Player of the Tournament), Astin Palenski, Ashan Weerasinghe, Marco Alpe, Henry Waite and Bruno Duder. GAME RESULTS: vs St Patrick’s College, Silversteam won by 8 wickets vs Napier Boys’ High School won by 9 wickets vs Tauranga Boys College won by 6 wickets vs John McGlashan won by 8 wickets vs Christ’s College won by 28 runs

NZ Cricket’s Report on the Final Game: Auckland Grammar School 222/5 (P Kharel 68, A Weerasinghe 34) beat Christ’s College 194 all out off 39 overs (H Shore 58, F Huston 28, A Palenski 3-30), Fitzherbert Park #2

Auckland Grammar School secured their fifth win and claimed the 2021 Junior Secondary Boys tournament title after the two strongest teams duked it out on the final day. Auckland Grammar’s Pawan Kharel put up an aggressive display, spending over an hour and a half at the crease and creating room for the middle order to launch from. Kharel, the player of the tournament, put on another strong display with 68 runs before being by Christ’s Finn McCormack-Young. Aashan Weerasinghe contributed an extra 34 runs, hitting the tournaments only six. The counterattack from Christ’s College was cut short as the top order fell away with little impact to the scoreboard. Felix Huston made 28 while a surprise late order star, Hunter Shore, bumped his teams total up by adding 58 runs. A Palenski shone with the ball taking three wickets for 30 runs, including the final wicket, winning Auckland Grammar the game and the title for the 2021 Junior Secondary Boys tournament.

NOTE: Pawan Kharel, Player of the Tournament, scored 237 runs at 79.00. He also took 4 wickets.

Junior Prizegiving – Sunday 21 March

This was very well attended and full details will be given in a later Update. Meantime enjoy the photo below from Amy Coyte:

Year 3 Dragons – L-R Tom Larkin (most improved), Jack Williams (5 wicket bag) Freddie Halliday (team award), Harry Walton (5 wicket bag) – thanks Amy Coyte for the photo!

Under 12s – Social Game: Parnell vs East Coast Bays – 21 March

MANAGER/COACH ASH HILL REPORTS: We were well beaten in the end, with our guys struggling to adjust to the pace of the grass wicket / red ball and not getting enough runs on the board to create pressure...... and our poorest effort of the season didn't help. That said, that was the purpose of the game and it was an excellent learning experience for the boys as they transition into college cricket. The more of opportunities like this that the club can offer to future year groups the better in my view.

The game was played in great spirit, with the bean bags and picket fences showing PCC in all its glory. We hosted an afternoon tea which was very well received and had drinks/speeches at the club at the end of the game. ECB are keen to reciprocate next summer and so we look forward to evening the ledger in the "battel of the bridge"!

Finally, thank you to Ian Trott for taking an interest in the game. All of the boys appreciated you being there, and the coaches benefited again from a few well-timed observations!

Short scoreboard:

Parnell 142/10 off 37.5 overs. Finn Hill 46; Johnny Ormond 36. For East Coast Bays, Oscar Chandler 3/19 off 5 and Xaver McKinnon 3/14 off 5. ECB 144/4 off 23.3 overs. Oscar Smith 55 and Liam Kristiffor 58. For Parnell no real standouts but tidy spells from Freddie Blyth; Finn Hill and Ushitha Caldrea (who was the pick of the bowlers with 3 overs 0/6 and was unlucky not to pick up 2 or 3 wickets).

Senior Prizegiving – 21 March

Great to see our Premier Women at Saturday’s Prizegiving – bubbling after beating Howick Pakuranga to finish 3rd in the Prichard Cup. More details in the next Update

Relics of the Past

Haggitt’s Rabbits vs Speakman’s Unspeakables Thursday 25 March, 5.30pm – Shore Road 1.

TEAMS – from: Brad Winger (capt. Unspeakables), Chey Barnes (capt. Rabbits), Cam Rope , Mark Smith, Mark Turner, Dave Bygrave (wk), Mike Burgess, Charlie Urry, Bryan Haggitt (senior), Richard Hobbs, Jamie Pike, Will Shearman, Jono Mar, Mike Ravlic, Gary Philson, Billy Walton and Gavin Nell

A gloriously fine afternoon, the teams assembled for a 15 over game starting at 5.30pm. The Rabbits elected to bat and Haggitt and Barnes opened the innings to the left arn spin of Hobbs. The first two balls bounced, spun sharply away and were left alone. Third ball cut, seemingly through gully – off for a run but NO – sent back, Ravlic pounced, keeper removed bails and Haggitt departed (the Doctor may have just rplaced the bails and stayed) but the crowd had not come to see me! So endeth the commetary – photos will tell the story:

Dave Bygrave back behind the stumps and your Editor at the crease. The Photographer alluded to similarities of the latter to the good Doctor – Aged – yes, beards – yes, girth – yes (sadly), caps – yes (but don’t think WG played for Hong Kong CC), run scoring ability – the Doctor certainly had that over me! But I did middle the ball – even if it was only with the toe!

Through both innings there were some remarkable cricket shots played, some ,in their daring, reminiscent of the “Golden Age” of long ago – recovered memories, perhaps:

Turns dynamically onto the front foot “Oops – is that down his throat?”

Mark Smith Billy Walton Chey Barnes Turns

Matt Willacy with bat, Dave Bygrave sharp behind the stumps Jamie Pike batting, Turns keeping and an alert slip Gavin Nell bowling, Kerry Dawe umpiring

Gary Philson driving Matt Willacy Charlie Urry taking the long handle Cam Rope

Dave Bygrave with the bat Gary Philson with the ball Turns takes a catch Jono Mar hurls one down

Mike Burgess Billy Walton Mike Ravlic bowling at pace Brad Winger with the ball

Mark Smith Jamie Pike Charlie Urry Gavin Nell batting

Will Shearman then Chey Barnes – top scorer for the Rabbits, Brad Winger and Richard Hobbs who’s batting clinched the game for the Unspeakables

The game ended in the twilight gloom, the Unspeakables victors with 2 balls to spare Great photos from Craig Speakman – thanks Craig! And many thanks to Brad Winger for organising this great game. Rehydration followed and old yarns retold.
