Norm observed staff from the center come to Evans Tower weekly and play bingo. He never wanted to play or interact with many of his neighbors, but Norm became curious as to the senior programming at the Saint Martin de Porres Center. One day he decided to walk over and, much to his surprise, found a few other gentleman to talk with, interesting guest speakers, and warm meals. At first shy, he quickly warmed up to his new friends and began to see the value in the programming and its positive impact. He decided to bring along his friend Fred who quickly engaged in the program, letting his creative side shine. Fred and Norm have both become involved, helping daily in our garden, assisting ladies to their cars, and are the first ones to engage with any new gentlemen or guest speakers. Keisha is the granddaughter of one of our senior clients who quit her job to care for her grandmother. She and her grandma received our home-delivered groceries to help make ends meet while living 55 people were served through our on a monthly income of less than $250. Keisha’s grandmother new home food delivery program was hospitalized soon after Keisha quit her job and, sadly, never made it back home. Keisha called to ask for our help. Her family was hungry and needed more food to sustain them. Her $250 couldn’t even cover rent and utilities. But what she also needed was an ear to listen and a friend to rely on. We continue to keep in touch with Keisha, giving her someone to talk to and help for the family. We try our best to help her find resources to pay her rent and other bills, and provide her family with nutritious food such as fresh produce from our garden. We feel blessed that Keisha has become part of the Catholic Charities family.
