Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.

Wormholes. Time travel. Transporters. Androids. Aliens. Space cowboys and Saurian brandy. This is the stuff of science fiction, of future worlds and alternate universes. Syd Mead’s definition focuses our study since science fiction stories should lie within the realm of scientific possibility. (Think about Captain Kirk’s communicator and then look down at your cell phone.) In this course, we’ll boldly explore what critics call the “literature of ideas,” the genre that bridges the arts and sciences, and we’ll discuss how writers have used science fiction as a vehicle for social criticism and a commentary on the human condition. We’ll be reading some of the finest science fiction ever written and watching some great film adaptations. You will also be reading a variety of critical articles written by the leading scholars of their time. By the end of the course, you should be able to do the following: • Trace the evolution of the science fiction tradition • Identify the leading writers and scholars in the canon • Grasp the conventions and characteristics of the science fiction genre • Conduct research in science fiction appropriate for a 300-level English course • Read a text through several critical methodologies • Construct and support a sound, reasonable argument • Demonstrate control of your reading and thinking about texts • Engage in your own creative work in the genre • Formulate some of your own conclusions about the importance of the science fiction genre and its significance to contemporary culture Learning Outcomes for English majors In addition to the outcomes for the course, English majors will demonstrate the following: 1.

As futurist narrative, it resonates with the natural psychological disposition of giving meaning to life through stories. Science fiction encompasses the future of everything, and stimulates cosmic consciousness. Science fiction can be traced to multiple origins, one of which is ancient myth, with which, though grounded in the scientific vision of reality, it shares many features. Science fiction is mythic holistic future consciousness. Science fiction is evolutionary in that continually builds upon past ideas. The scientific theory of cosmic evolution provides the fundamental narrative framework for modern science fiction. As the evolutionary mythology of the future, science fiction facilitates the purposeful evolution of holistic future consciousness. Science Fiction as a Way of Life As a young boy growing up in the 1950s, I was drawn into the wondrous, strange, and at times frightening world of the future through the movies. At my neighborhood theatre, I watched—totally mesmerized—the classic science fiction movies, The War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, The Time Machine, and the best of the best, Forbidden Planet. I specifically remember, after watching The War of the Worlds, that the movie tremendously excited me; my total conscious being came alive in the cinematic experience. I was inspired to write a short story of aliens invading the Earth; I created illustrations for the story and designed costumes as well. I recruited some of my friends to play the different roles in the story. We were going to “live the future,” a future of space ships, aliens, and great battles to defend the earth.

Science fiction is speculative fiction set in worlds based on plausible scientific theories. The genre traditionally describes future worlds and technologies, but past settings that are nonetheless rich in future technologies have grown in popularity. No matter the time and setting, science supported by known scientific principles drive the stories. What happens in a Science Fiction novel? Science fiction novels run the gamut from traditional action and adventure (with ray guns) to stories that incorporate moral, social, and ethical issues into explorations of philosophical, technical, and intellectual questions. Science fiction is fertile ground for the discussion of challenging and often controversial issues and ideas, and authors may use it expressly for that purpose. Why do people like Science Fiction? The genre is rich in physical and intellectual adventure, with something to please a wide range of readers, from fans of romance and mystery to those who appreciate literary fiction and even westerns. Science fiction is evocative and visual, filled with technical and scientific details. Readers prize science fiction for its ability to raise thought-provoking issues, whether intellectual, moral, or social. Science fiction deals with "why", philosophical speculations, as well as with "where", futuristic settings outside of the usual; with alien beings as well as alien and unorthodox concepts. It cherishes the unexpected, in terms of setting, characters, and plot, and it prides itself in its ability to raise challenging questions. Science fiction also affirms the importance of the imagination and of story in readers' lives.

We would receive about half a dozen nominations and 2.) all the QRPLQDWLRQVZRXOGEHVFLHQFH¿FWLRQ Boy, were we wrong. $IWHUUHPRYLQJGXSOLFDWHQRPLQHHVDVZHOODVWKRVHVXJJHVWLRQVWKDWGLGQRW¿WWKH FULWHULDRIRULJLQDOSXEOLVKHG¿FWLRQZHHQGHGXSZLWKGLIIHUHQWZRUNVWKDWUHÀHFWHGRU referenced minerals, metals, or materials science and engineering. Even more gratifying was the breadth of nominees—Shakespeare, Homer, children’s stories, and romance novels DOOIDFWRUHGRQWKHOLVW $OWKRXJK\HVVFLHQFH¿FWLRQGLGPDNHDYHU\VWURQJVKRZLQJ This left us with a happy dilemma. The ultimate goal of the JOM Materials Fiction Countdown was to give readers the opportunity to vote for the Top Ten Greatest Works RI0DWHULDOV)LFWLRQRIDOOWLPHIURPWKH¿QDOOLVWRIQRPLQHHV7U\LQJWRPDNHWKDWFKRLFH IURPD¿HOGRIFDQGLGDWHVVHHPHGXQZLHOG\DWEHVW So, as is the way of TMS, we turned to our volunteers to make a good thing even better. In October, the TMS Board of Directors appointed an ad hoc committee to whittle the roster down to the 25 strongest candidates in terms of their connection to minerals, metals, and materials science and engineering. In addition to drawing from their own literary knowledge, the committee members carefully reviewed the written nominations, as well as resources and reviews that provided additional details and insight on the works. The task was easier said than done, particularly with so many written nominations making strong arguments for why a favorite book should be included.
