Vocabulary Growth Using Nonfiction Literature and Dialogic Discussions in Preschool Classrooms Abstract The preschool years are a crucial time for children to develop vocabulary knowledge. A quality preschool environment promotes large amounts of language usage including picture book read alouds and discussions. There is growing research to support the use of nonfiction literature in preschool classrooms to promote vocabulary growth and knowledge of the world for preschool children. This research study compared vocabulary growth of preschool children using fiction and dialogic discussions ersusv vocabulary growth of preschool children using nonfiction and dialogic discussions following a six week study of autumn and changes that happen during this season to the environment and animals. The quasi- experimental design used the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-4, a curriculum-based measure for receptive vocabulary, and a curriculum-based measure for expressive vocabulary to assess vocabulary growth. -

"History"refers to both a subject matterand a thoughtprocess. That thoughtprocess involves raising questions, marshallingevidence, discerningpatterns in the evidence, writing narratives,and critiquingthe narrativeswrit- ten by others. Whatever subject matter they study, all historians employ the thought process of historicalthinking. What if historianswere to extend the process of historicalthinking into the subjectmat- ter domain of the future?Historians would breach one of our profession's most rigid dis- ciplinarybarriers. Very few historiansventure predictions about the future, and those who do are viewed with skepticism by the profession at large. On methodological grounds, most historiansreject as either impractical,quixotic, hubristic,or dangerousany effort to examine the past as a way to make predictionsabout the future. However, where at one time thinking about the future did mean making a scientifical- ly-based prediction,futurists today arejust as likely to think in terms of scenarios.Where a predictionis a definitive statementabout what will be, scenarios are heuristicnarratives that explore alternativeplausibilities of what might be. Scenario writers, like historians, understandthat surprise,contingency, and deviations from the trend line are the rule, not the exception; among scenario writers, context matters.The thought process of the sce- nario method shares many features with historical thinking. With only minimal intellec- tual adjustment,then, most professionally trainedhistorians possess the necessary skills to write methodologicallyrigorous "historiesof the future." History, according to Kevin Reilly, is both a noun and a verb.' By this Reilly means that "history" refers to both a subject matter-a body of knowledge-and a thought process, a disciplined habit of mind. -

The Future of Robotics An Inside View on Innovation in Robotics FEATURE Robots, Humans and Work Executive Summary Robotics in the Startup Ecosystem The automation of production through three industrial revolutions has increased global output exponentially. Now, with machines increasingly aware and interconnected, Industry 4.0 is upon us. Leading the charge are fleets of autonomous robots. Built by major multinationals and increasingly by innovative VC-backed companies, these robots have already become established participants in many areas of the economy, from assembly lines to farms to restaurants. Investors, founders and policymakers are all still working to conceptualize a framework for these companies and their transformative Austin Badger technology. In this report, we take a data-driven approach to emerging topics in the industry, including business models, performance metrics, Director, Frontier Tech Practice and capitalization trends. Finally, we review leading theories of how automation affects the labor market, and provide quantitative evidence for and against them. It is our view that the social implications of this industry will be massive and will require a continual examination by those driving this technology forward. Falling into History: The ImaginedWests of Kim Stanley Robinson in the "Three Californias" and Mars Trilogies Carl Abbott California science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson has imagined the future of Southern California in three novels published 1984-1990, and the settle ment of Mars in another trilogy published 1993-1996. In framing these narratives he worked in explicitly historical terms and incorporated themes and issues that characterize the "new western history" of the 1980s and 1990s, thus providing evidence of the resonance of that new historiography. .EDMars is Kim Stanley Robinson's R highly praised science fiction novel published in 1993.1 Its pivotal section carries the title "Falling into History." More than two decades have passed since permanent human settlers arrived on the red planet in 2027, and the growing Martian communities have become too complex to be guided by simple earth-made plans or single individuals. -

WRITING CREATIVE NON-FICTION THEODORE A. REES CHENEY CREATIVE NONFICTION Creative nonfiction tells a story using facts, but uses many of the techniques of fiction for its compelling qualities and emotional vibrancy. Creative nonfiction doesn’t just report facts, it delivers facts in ways that move the reader toward a deeper understanding of a topic. Creative nonfiction requires the skills of the storyteller and the research ability of the conscientious reporter. Writers of creative nonfiction must become instant authorities on the subject of their articles or books. They must not only understand the facts and report them using quotes by authorities, they must also see beyond them to discover their underlying meaning, and they must dramatize that meaning in an interesting, evocative, informative way—just as a good teacher does. When you write nonfiction, you are, in effect, teaching the reader. Research into how we learn shows that we learn best when we are simultaneously entertained—when there is pleasure in the learning. Other research shows that our most lasting memories are those wrapped in emotional overtones. Creative nonfiction writers inform their readers by making the reading experience vivid, emotionally compelling, and enjoyable while sticking to the facts. TELLING THE “WHOLE TRUTH” Emotions inform our understanding all the time. So, to tell the whole truth about most situations that involve people (and most situations do), in the words of Tom Wolfe, we need to “excite the reader both intellectually and emotionally.” The best nonfiction writers do not tell us how we should think about something, how we should feel about it, nor what emotions should be aroused. -

If a man could write a book on Ethics which really was a book on Ethics, this book would, with an explosion, destroy all the other books in the world. 1 The debate on whether literature does or should possess ethical relevance is both old and new. As far back as in the ancient times, Plato and Aristotle addressed the ways in which aesthetic structure produces affective power, as well as the extent to which the affective power of literature may provide direction, or in fact—as in the case of Plato’s famous critique of poetry—misdirection to an audience’s moral consciousness. In more recent years, in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, the intersections of literature and ethics became the focus of work by Wayne C. Booth,2 who theorized on the moral functioning of rhetorical practices, and Martha C. Nussbaum,3 who addressed literature from the perspective of moral philosophy. In an article published in the 2004 special issue of Poetics Today, which focused on Ethics and Literature, Michael Eskin4 draws attention to moral philosophy’s “turn to literature,” a move that aims to embed moral philosophy’s abstract investigations into the concrete domain of human and social relations opened up by literature. At the same time, however, philosophy’s turn toward literature has coincided with a turn of literary studies toward ethics,5 a fact which some attribute to a reaction against formalism and poststructuralism. -

Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory John Wakeley Harvard University INTRODUCTION The story of population genetics begins with the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the tension which followed concerning the nature of inheritance. Today, workers in this field aim to understand the forces that produce and maintain genetic variation within and between species. For this we use the most direct kind of genetic data: DNA sequences, even entire genomes. Our “Great Obsession” with explaining genetic variation (Gillespie, 2004a) can be traced back to Darwin’s recognition that natural selection can occur only if individuals of a species vary, and this variation is heritable. Darwin might have been surprised that the importance of natural selection in shaping variation at the molecular level would be de-emphasized, beginning in the late 1960s, by scientists who readily accepted the fact and importance of his theory (Kimura, 1983). The motivation behind this chapter is the possible demise of this Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, which a growing number of population geneticists feel must follow recent observations of genetic variation within and between species. One hundred fifty years after the publication of the Origin, we are struggling to fully incorporate natural selection into the modern, genealogical models of population genetics. The main goal of this chapter is to present the mathematical models that have been used to describe the effects of positive selective sweeps on genetic variation, as mediated by gene genealogies, or coalescent trees. Background material, comprised of population genetic theory and simulation results, is provided in order to facilitate an understanding of these models.
