The League Council meeting in February was informed that Newcastle Emlyn had dropped out of division two having played 12 games when their record read drawn 4 lost 8 goals for 13 against 40. They had also had two points deducted for playing ineligible players and were bottom of the table before their withdrawal.

There was a significant rule change at the beginning of the season whereby clubs found guilty of playing ineligible players would have to replay the match if they had they won the game and lose a point if the game had been drawn.

First Division

Defending champions Johnston got off to a flying start winning their first five games. This included a 7-0 away win at Fishguard Sports (Mike Griffiths (2), Chris Walters, Martin Davies, Richard James, Huw Brophy & Tony Algieri) and a 5-0 home win against St Clears (Martin Davies (3), Mike Griffiths & Chris Walters). They eventually dropped their first points with a 2-2 draw away to Manorbier United where Steve Davies netted both home goals with Glyn Ruloff and John Codd replying for the league leaders.

There were also some rather unusual starts to a season; Narberth drew their first six games and eventually broke this run with a 5-2 win away to Milford Athletic thanks to two apiece for Mike Johns and Norman James and one for Peter Hughes with David Griffiths and David Leabourne replying for the Athletic. Carew lost their first six games until they too recorded a 5-2 success away at Fishguard Sports thanks to a hat-trick from Dai Sefton and goals from John Griffiths and Dai Arthur. Sean Roche netted both goals for the Sports.

An even more unusual statistic belonged to Fishguard Sports who at the beginning of March had played 21 games and drawn thirteen of them! More about that later.

Johnston finally lost their unbeaten record following a 2-1 home defeat to Goodwick United where goals from Martyn John and Stewart Wilson cancelled out a strike by Chris Walters. This started a mini slump for the league leaders who went on to lose two of their next three games including a 2-0 defeat away to second from bottom Solva (Lyn Lewis & Shaun Young), and a 2-1 defeat away to Kilgetty where all three goals were scored by Kilgetty’s Graham Jenkins! Sandwiched between these latter two defeats was a 3-2 home win over local rivals Merlins Bridge. Martin Davies had given Johnston an early lead only for Mario Rabaiotti to equalise following a Macky Bowen penalty hitting the post. Two early goals in the second half from Glyn Ruloff and Gary Stephens restored the lead for the league leaders and although Dekker Thomas pulled one back with a header Johnston ran out winners.

Despite this mini blip, at the end of December Johnston led the table:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Johnston 14 9 2 3 32 14 18 20 2 Monkton Swifts 13 6 4 3 27 18 9 16 3 St Clears 13 6 4 3 31 27 4 16 4 Goodwick United 13 4 7 2 17 16 1 15 5 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 13 5 5 3 25 27 -2 15 6 Narberth 14 3 8 3 29 27 2 14 7 Kilgetty 12 3 8 1 22 20 2 14 8 Manorbier United 14 5 4 5 29 32 -3 14 9 Merlins Bridge 10 5 2 3 18 11 7 12 10 Hakin United 9 4 3 2 16 11 5 11 11 Fishguard Sports 16 0 11 5 22 38 -16 11 12 Carew 13 3 3 7 21 28 -7 9 13 Solva 10 3 2 5 20 19 1 8 14 Milford United 12 3 2 7 27 32 -5 8 15 Milford Athletic 12 1 3 8 15 31 -16 5

At this stage Kilgetty had only suffered one defeat, a 3-2 reversal at home to St Clears in the first game of the season (Paul Hancock & Paul John/Steve Davies, Dyfrig Davies & Dai John). There was also to be an abundance of draws in the league, with Fishguard Sports drawing 11 of their 16 games, Narberth and Kilgetty having drawn eight and Goodwick United seven. Although Johnston led the way there was five sides who could have gone ahead of or within two points of the leaders if they won their games in hand.

The new year saw St Clears go top after three consecutive wins whilst Johnston did not play a league game until the middle of February. The most impressive of these wins was a 4-3 home success against Goodwick United where two Dai Pick goals and one each from Steve Davies and Dai John cancelled out two goals from Stewart Wilson and one from Martyn John for Goodwick. This run was further extended in a classic against New Hedges/Saundersfoot on 6/3/12 when they trailed 5-2 with twenty minutes to go but remarkably fought back to win 6- 5. Goals from Alan Brindley (two), Gary McNeilly (two) and Phil Nicholls had given New Hedges the lead but two each for Dai John and Dai Pick and one each for Geoff Massey and Anthony Howells gave the Saints a fantastic victory. The result saw them open up a six point lead at the top of the table although their nearest rivals Johnston had four games in hand.

The week before this critical victory Johnston inflicted upon Kilgetty only their second defeat of the season when they triumphed 2-1 at the Glebelands thanks to Chris Walters and an own goal. Steven Lewis replied for the visitors who had gone 13 games unbeaten.

Thus with the commencement of midweek fixtures the top of the table as at 27/3 looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 St Clears 21 14 4 3 60 40 20 32 2 Johnston 18 13 2 3 42 16 26 28 3 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 22 10 6 6 48 40 8 26 4 Merlins Bridge 16 11 2 3 41 18 23 24

The first set of midweek fixtures saw Johnston record a crucial 1-0 win away to Merlins Bridge thanks to a Mike Griffiths goal, followed by a 4-2 success at home to Hakin United that saw them go back top of the table. In the same week the Bridge lost further ground with another 1-0 home defeat to Narberth that virtually ended their championship hopes.

The next set of Saturday fixtures (3/4) saw all three sides win, Johnston 4-2 at Monkton Swifts (Roy Davies,Paul Bargery/ John Codd, Martin Davies, Chris Walters (two)), St Clears 2-1 at Carew (Stephen Brown/Dai John, Malcolm Revell) and the Bridge 2-1 at Solva (Lyn Lewis/Glyn Griffiths, Dekker Thomas).

However in the next round of midweek matches the Bridge lost further ground with 0-0 draw against Monkton Swifts although they did also beat the Athletic 4-0. Johnston recorded two victories a 2-0 away win at New Hedges/Saundersfoot and they then also beat the Athletic 4- 2. St Clears were only in action once when they completed back to back wins over Carew with a 2-0 home win.

On the 10/4 April Johnston recorded a 2-0 victory over Milford United thanks to two Martin Davies goals whilst the Bridge dropped another point with a 1-1 home draw against Kilgetty (Gary Ralph/Roy Lewis).

With Johnston in Senior Cup final action on the 17/4 they faced no midweek fixtures whereas the Bridge caught up their games in hand with a 4-2 defeat at Narberth and a 7-1 victory at Carew. Thus with four games left the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Johnston 24 19 2 3 59 22 37 40 2 St Clears 24 17 4 3 67 42 25 38 3 Merlins Bridge 24 14 4 6 57 27 30 32

On senior cup final Saturday St Clears travelled to Merlins Bridge for an early kick off and returned with a point following a 2-2 draw.

This was to be the Saints last point of the season and they lost their last three games, all at home, to Kilgetty (1-2), a remarkable 6-7 reversal against Merlins Bridge and finally a 1-2 home defeat to the newly crowned champions Johnston.

Johnston on the other hand dropped only one point in their last 4 games, starting with a 3-3 draw at Goodwick United. They clinched the championship with a narrow 1-0 (Chris Walters) victory over Manorbier United and finished the season with a 5-1 victory at Hakin and then victory at St Clears.

Johnston’s success had been based on only dropping 2 points in their last sixteen games though they had been pushed all the way by St Clears who despite sitting in ninth place after seven games went on a 17 match run where the only points they dropped was following a 5-3 defeat at Manorbier.

At the other end of the table things were looking very tight after the last Saturday fixtures in March, although Milford Athletic were looking favourites for a quick return to division two.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 9 Manorbier United 21 7 5 9 36 46 -10 19 10 Narberth 20 5 8 7 36 42 -6 18 11 Hakin United 15 6 4 5 25 23 2 16 12 Fishguard Sports 23 1 14 8 33 53 -20 16 13 Solva 20 5 4 11 34 40 -6 14 14 Milford United * 19 4 3 12 34 47 -13 10 15 Milford Athletic 22 2 4 16 22 58 -36 8

* Milford United one point deducted for playing an ineligible player and also had a 6-2 win against New Hedges/Saundersfoot annulled for the same reason.

Hakin had five games in hand over all their opponents and when they beat Milford United in the first round of midweek fixtures 3-0 (Andrew Robertson and Donald Forrest two) they gave themselves some breathing space. United recovered quickly from this defeat and beat the Athletic 3-2 two nights later when Solva also recorded a critical 3-1 away win at Fishguard thanks to two goals from Lyn Lewis, a result that drew their opponents deeper into the relegation battle.

Milford Athletic picked up a point in their next fixture with a 1-1 draw at Manorbier United, but then lost to the Bridge 4-0, confirming their relegation to division 2.

Elsewhere Hakin pulled further away with a 2-1 win at Manorbier United, whose own relegation fears were heightening especially following a 4-1 defeat at Kilgetty and then a 3-1 defeat at Fishguard Sports, where two own goals and a strike from Paul Richards accounted for the home team goals with Alan Bowen replying for the visitors. This was only Fishguard’s second win of the season and it took them out of the bottom two to be replaced by Solva who lost 3-1 at New Hedges/Saundersfoot.

Fishguard Sports then followed this success up with another win, a 4-2 midweek success at home to Hakin, and with Solva losing 3-0 at home to Milford United the relegation places were still in the balance.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 9 Carew 26 8 6 12 40 47 -7 22 10 Monkton Swifts 27 7 8 12 45 58 -13 22 11 Fishguard Sports 26 3 14 9 41 59 -18 20 12 Manorbier United 26 7 6 13 41 59 -18 20 13 Milford United * 25 8 3 14 48 54 -6 18 14 Solva 25 6 5 14 40 50 -10 17 15 Milford Athletic 27 2 5 20 29 75 -46 9

The next round of fixtures saw Solva record a crucial 3-1 win over Manorbier, Fishguard Sports record the double over Hakin with a 1-0 win and Milford United winning 4-1 at Narberth. Milford then followed this up with a 3-1 win at home to Kilgetty and going into the last Saturday of the season Solva travelled to already relegated Milford Athletic whilst Manorbier United travelled to Johnston who needed a win to become champions.

Despite a valiant effort by Manorbier in only losing 1-0, Solva’s 3-2 victory at Milford Athletic saw Manorbier join the Athletic in an immediate return to division two.

Manorbier United downfall had resulted in them failing to win any of their last nine games. Despite gaining 20 points, the highest number of points gained by a relegated team, they returned to the second division after only one season in the top flight. They had been second in the table at the end of October and were also the only side to beat St Clears between 3/10 and 17/4 when the Saints only lost one game in a 20 match run.

Fishguard Sports took 22 games before they recorded their first victory of the season though four wins in their last seven games saw them pull clear of relegation. Monkton Swifts were in free-fall at the end of the season and the failure to win only one game in their last 15 saw them drop from second at the end of November to twelfth at the season end.

Some of the leading goal-scorers were as follows (note that the final figure is only indicative of the number of goals scored and would have been greater if all goal scorers were available).

Steve Davies (St Clears) 17 Macky Bowen (Merlins Bridge) 14 John Stenson (New Hedges/Saundersfoot) 13 Stewart Wilson (Goodwick United) 13 Martin Davies (Johnston) 13 Mike Johns (Narberth) 12 Dai Pick (St Clears) 12 David Sefton (Carew) 11 Steve Davies (Manorbier United) 10 Bernie Armstrong (Milford United) 10 Roy Davies (Monkton Swifts) 10 Colin Fawcett (Hakin United) 10

Second Division

The early season pace setters in were RAF Brawdy who after drawing their first game of the season went on to win their next six games. The draw had come in a midweek fixture away at Kilgetty when they drew 3-3. Their biggest win was a 9-0 home success against Goodwick United II where three from Steve Lowe and two each from Derek Burgess, Mick Gosney and Bob Francis gave the airmen a handsome win.

Of the newly promoted clubs Johnston II faired the best sitting third in the division at the end of October having won six and drawn two of their ten games. One of these wins was aginst fellow promoted side Haverfordwest County when goals from Gwyn Griffiths, Mick Algieri and two from Glen Murray cancelled out a lone Sandy Lawrence goal for the home team. Haverfordwest on the other hand returned to their 1979-80 form when they lost every one of their 26 games. This time around they picked up a point on the first Saturday of the season with a 4-4 draw with Monkton Swifts II where Ian Harries and Micky Ellis shared the goals for the town whilst Nobby Clark and Jimmy Pickering did likewise for The Swifts. After this they lost the next eight.

Also in the promotion race at this stage were MHPC and Pennar Robins who met in Milford on 26/9 when a Dai Scoble goal for the home team was not enough to secure a point thanks to goals from Mike John and Mike Allen. Indeed Pennar themselves suffered a 4-0 home defeat against the RAF on the last Saturday in October with Derek Burgess, Steve Smithies and Wayne Gates scoring three of the airmen goals.

The airmen remained unbeaten at the end of the December when the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 RAF Brawdy 14 11 3 0 57 10 47 25 2 Pennar Robins 13 10 1 2 34 18 16 21 3 Johnston II 14 9 2 3 35 29 6 20 4 MHPC 14 8 3 3 59 27 32 19 5 Neyland 13 7 1 5 30 25 5 15 6 Letterston 10 6 2 2 46 22 24 14 7 St Ishmaels 13 6 2 5 33 19 14 14 8 Merlins Bridge II 11 5 3 3 23 21 2 13

In January Newcastle Emlyn withdrew from the league and all points gained against them were deducted. The biggest losers in this were Pennar who lost four points.

In the first five games of the new year the RAF remained unbeaten but drew three of them. This included back to back games against Angle with the first game ending 2-2 with Norman Cook and Kevin Jenkins scoring for the home team and Sparrow Glynn and Steve Lowe scoring for the airmen. The following week saw Angle travel to Brawdy where goals from Bob Francis (four), Mike Winstone, Mick Gosney, Steve Smithies, Keith May, Wayne Gates, Gareth Hey and an own goal saw the airmen record an 11-0 victory!

Thus going into the start of the midweek fixtures the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 RAF Brawdy 18 12 6 0 67 14 53 30 2 Johnston II 19 12 4 3 53 37 16 28 3 Pennar Robins 18 12 3 3 42 24 18 27 4 MHPC 20 10 4 6 74 40 34 24 5 Letterston 15 9 4 2 68 29 39 22

The first round of midweek fixtures saw the top four teams clash. The RAF Brawdy won at Johnston II 2-1, and Pennar Robins won 2-0 at Bush Camp against MHPC, virtually ending the oilmen’s promotion hopes, whilst Letterston also lost a bit of ground with a 2-0 defeat at Goodwick. The RAF Brawdy also recorded a 6-1 victory against Haverfordwest County.

Fixtures on the 3rd April saw St Ishmaels hold the RAF Brawdy to a 1-1 draw (Bob Francis/Glyn Griffiths) whilst Pennar Robins and Letterston drew with the same score (Billy Jones/Kevin White). Johnston II kept the pressure up with a 5-3 win against Neyland, thanks to two goals from Glen Murray and one each for Russell Murray, Peter Griffiths and Dean Boswell.

Monday night fixtures threw out a spate of draws with the RAF Brawdy (1-1 against Merlins Bridge II), Johnston (1-1 against St Ishmaels) and Letterston 3-3 against Fishguard Sports II, all drawing. Pennar took advantage with a 3-2 away win at Angle.

There were also fixtures on the Wednesday where the RAF Brawdy won 3-0 at Neyland, Pennar won 5-0 at the Bridge and Johnston II drew 3-3 with Letterston.

On Saturday the 10th Pennar Robins recorded a crucial 2-0 win over Johnston II thanks to two Billy Jones goals that saw them go within two points of the RAF both with three games to go.

Thursday the 15th saw the airmen complete the double over Johnston with a narrow 1-0 win and when they beat MHPC by the same score-line the following night they virtually assured themselves of the championship. Thus going into their last game unbeaten they faced runners up Pennar Robins at home. However the Robins took this record with an impressive 5-1 win, though they themselves suffered a final game defeat when they lost 2-1 at home to Merlins Bridge II.

At the other end of the table Haverfordwest County were relegated by the beginning of April although their record this time was better than the 1979-80 season when they lost all 26 games! This time they picked up four points with the highlight being a 2-1 win against Angle in November thanks to goals from Mark Reynolds and Mark Ridge.

Third Division

Steynton United, who had narrowly missed out on promotion in the previous season, started brightly winning their first eight games. Best result was a 10-0 win away to Carew II where John Lewis (3), Jimmy Harding (2), Gary Jones (2), Clark Power, Paul Kingston and Robert Hewer scored the goals. They lost their unbeaten tag on the last Saturday in October with a 2- 3 home defeat to newly promoted New Hedges/Saundersfoot II. Gary Jones and Robert Hewer had seen them claw back a 2-0 deficit only for Paul Heywood to score his second goal of the game to take the points. Steve Begley netted the other away goal.

The following weekend they returned to winning form with a 1-0 home win over second placed Hakin United II with Jimmy Harding netting a late goal, though Clarbeston Road inflicted upon them their only second defeat with a 3-2 win in Milford. Kevin John and Greg John(2) netted the goals for the Road with Jimmy Harding and John Lewis netting for Steynton.

They eventually lost their top spot to Hakin United, and with Pembroke Boro on a good run themselves the top of the table at Christmas was as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Hakin United II 16 13 0 3 51 27 24 26 2 Pembroke Boro 13 11 1 1 56 21 35 23 3 Steynton United 13 10 1 2 56 16 40 21 4 Clarbeston Road 14 8 2 4 37 22 15 18 5 Milford Athletic II * 14 7 4 3 36 21 15 17 6 Camrose 14 7 3 4 37 26 11 17 7 New Hedges/Saundersfoot II 13 7 2 4 36 32 4 16 * Milford Athletic one point deducted for playing an ineligible player

The Boro’s only defeat had been 4-0 at home to Steynton, whilst their best win had also been at home, 8-1 to New Hedges/Saundersfoot II where goals from Kevin Hughes (4), Charlie Evans, Chris Manning, Roger Scourfield and Andrew Dyson had cancelled out a lone strike from Steve Begley.

The 2nd January saw Hakin and Steynton play out a rare 0-0 draw, and although Milford Athletic II’s beat both the Boro (3-1 on 27/2) and Steynton United 2-0 on the 27/3, the top of the table going into the midweek fixtures saw the top three at the start of the year still being the only sides with a realistic chance of promotion:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Hakin United II 23 18 2 3 63 31 32 38 2 Steynton United 20 14 3 3 71 23 48 31 3 Pembroke Boro 18 14 1 3 69 29 40 29 4 Camrose 21 12 3 6 53 36 17 27

On the 27/3 the Boro had lost at home to Camrose 3-2 with Kevin Hughes and Paul Peters netting the home goals with John Grey (two) and Martin Thompson scoring for the visitors. This was the start of a bad run for the Boro and they only picked up three points out of the next ten. One of these was following a 2-2 draw against Steynton where Kevin Hughes and Paul Phillips scored for the Boro though the home goal-scorers were not reported.

In the first round of midweek fixtures the Athletic seconds kept up their good run of form with two excellent wins, firstly over Hakin 3-1 and then against the Boro 6-1. Hakin then also lost 1-0 away to Camrose, whose own outside chance of promotion were ended with a 2-0 defeat to local rivals Clarbeston Road.

On the 10/4 Hakin and Steynton virtually ensured themselves promotion with the latter winning 4-0 at Narberth and the former winning 3-1 at Pendine when goals from Daisy Picton, Robert Turner and Dennis Riley cancelled out a lone Roger Hunt goal for the homesters.

This left Steynton United four points behind with three games in hand. They succeeded in winning all three with their final game resulting in a resounding 9-3 win against bottom of the table Llawhaden.

At the bottom Pendine joined Llawhaden in being relegated with the latter side losing 27 of their 28 games. Their only success had been a 3-1 win against Pendine when the sides met in December. Terry Morris netted a hat-trick for the homesters with Frank Roberts replying for the visitors.

Fourth Division

League newcomers Scotfit started the season well and after five games remained unbeaten. However they were found to have played ineligible players in all games and were thus re- ordered to replay four of the games whilst the point they gained against RNAD Milford in a 2-2 draw was deducted. They then lost 2-1 at home to Bancyfelin where Paul Richards and Keith Oppenshaw netting the goals for the visitors, but after this game they remained unbeaten for the next 26 games, notching up over 160 goals in the process.

The early league leaders were Pembroke Power Station who in the previous season had recorded their best ever league placing finishing 11th in division four. In five of the six years prior to this they had finished rock bottom of the league, although in 1976-77 they did manage to finish second from bottom! However in this new campaign they led the table at the end of October having only been beaten once and won six of their nine games. Their best win was a midweek success against St Ishmaels II when they won 14-0. They had also beaten one of the other early leaders Manorbier United II 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Mike Callen and one from Peter Evans. In the first week in November they drew 0-0 with Scotfit though by the turn of the year they had slipped to fourth though had games in hand over the top sides.

The start of the new year saw Scotfit go from strength to strength and they hit their 100th goal of the season in a 14-0 demolition of Kilgetty III. Colin Thorpe led the scoring with four with Dai Saies 2, Chris Walters 2, Tommy Power 2, Henry Winning 2, John Lewis and Geraint Ralph completing the scoring.

They then had back to back away wins against two of the top four, firstly 4-1 against Letterston and then 8-1 against the Power Station thanks to goals from Micky Davies 3, Dai Saies 2, Chris Walters 2 and Nigel Ralph.

Elsewhere all other sides dropped points against each other and at the onset of the midweek fixtures Scotfit and the Power Station looked odds on for promotion.

Scotfit eventually ensured themselves of the championship on 10th April with a 3-1 win against Cosheston and although the power men had a slight wobble, with a 3-1 defeat away to Manorbier, they also gained promotion with two games to go following a 4-1 win against Neyland.

Scotfit’s success had been down to a 26 match unbeaten run, whilst at the other end of the table Kilgetty III finished bottom winning only one of their 28 games when two goals from Paul Mansbridge and one each from Clive Rich and Raymond Craig saw them surprisingly beat Bancyfelin 4-2.

Senior Cup

There were no major shocks in the first round although there were five all first division clashes. Tie of the round was the Monkton Swifts v New Hedges/Saundersfoot match with the sides sitting 2nd and 4th respectively when the match was played. The first game ended 3-3 at Saundersfoot with John Stenson, Alan Brindley and Stuart McKay scoring for the homesters who trailed 3-1 at half time. Graham Brown, Jimmy Pickering and Roy Davies had seen the Swifts go ahead. The first replay ended 1-1 (Steven Phillips/Alan Brindley), with the second replay at Manorbier ending ending 2-0 to the Swifts thanks to two Graham Brown goals. Elsewhere league leaders Johnston overcame Goodwick United thanks to goals from Tony Algieri and Gwyn Griffiths, whilst the only minor shock was 3rd placed St Clears losing 3-1 at home to 12th placed Carew. Graham Jones (two) and Stephen Brown scored for the visitors with Steffan Snarski scoring for the Saints.

Carew themselves suffered a shock in the second round when the lost to Letterston. The first game at Carew had ended 3-3 but goals from Paul Williams, Billy Robb and Will Nicholas in the replay saw the division two side progress to the quarter finals. Johnston required a replay to overcome Fishguard Sports 5-2 with a hat-trick for Mike Griffiths and one each for Martin Davies and Chris Walters with Brian Kinsella and Peter Morgan scoring for the Sports. Dekker Thomas and Alan Pughsley scored the goals that saw the Bridge through against the Swifts whilst a Dai Cove goal was enough to see St Ishmaels win the all second division clash when they knocked out the league leaders RAF Brawdy.

The quarters saw Letterston produce another upset with a 2-1 (Tony Evans & Kevin White/ Mario Rabaiotti) win at the Bridge whilst a Billy Palmer goal against Pembroke Boro was enough to see Tish through to the semis. In the other all first division ties a Martin Davies hat-trick saw Johnston win easily at Narberth whilst the Kilgetty/Hakin United tie turned into a classic. The first two games ended 3-3 whilst the second replay at London Road saw a lone Wallace Howells strike send Kilgetty into the semis.

In the semi they came up against Johnston and trailed 1-0 at half time to a Mike Griffiths goal. Steve Lewis equalised but further goals from Martin Davies and Gary Stephens, direct from a corner, saw Johnston go 3-1up and although an Alastair Murdock goal kept Kilgetty in the contest a late Martin Davies header saw Johnston through to the final. In the other all second division affair a first half Glyn Griffiths goal was enough to see St Ishmaels beat Letterston.

The final at Marble Hall saw Tish take the lead thanks to an Alan Proctor goal. Johnston equalised with a Gary Stephens penalty and in the 55th minute Richard James secured the win for the division one team.

Second Division Cup

The surprise team in the second division cup were Neyland who reached the final despite having a mediocre season in the league. They easily accounted for Kilgetty II in the first round with Jeff Button (3), Mike Barnett (2), Kelvin Townsend, John Price, Billy Caldwell and Mike Lampard netting the goals in a 9-1 win. They accounted for Monkton Swifts II in the second round which saw them draw league leaders RAF Brawdy in the semi-final. Terry Rees gave them a 1-0 lead in the tie and Jeff Button added to the lead before Derek Burgess pulled one back for the Airmen. However the scoring ended here and Neyland progressed to the final.

Here they met cup specialists St Ishmaels who five days earlier had played Johnston in the Senior cup final. Tish’s run to the final had started with a 1-0 away win to Johnston II (Billy Palmer), followed by a 2-1 win away to Goodwick United II (Billy Palmer & Alan Proctor). In the semi they met Letterston who they had met in the senior cup a week earlier. This time they recorded a comfortable 4-0 win with Billy Palmer and Glyn Griffiths both netting a brace.

The final, played at Marble Hall, saw Tish pick up the trophy with a narrow 1-0 win with George Grey scoring the only goal.

Third Division Cup

There were no major shocks in the cup with league champions Steynton United facing third placed Pembroke Boro in the final. On their way to the final Steynton had knocked out local rivals and championship challengers Hakin United II 2-1. Mike Jenkins netted the lone home goal, with Andrew Lewis and Mike Morris scoring for the visitors.

In the final Benno Jones gave the Boro the lead midway through the second half and the victory was sealed five minutes from time when Mark Powell drove home a penalty after Mike Hawkridge had been penalised for handling the ball on the line.

Fourth Division Cup

The tie of the first round saw Manorbier United II and Pennar Robins II take four games to decide a winner and following two 3-3 draws and one 2-2 draw Pennar eventually won the third replay 6-0 thanks to a brace a piece from Albert Butland and Tony Davies, one from Peter Guerriero and an own goal.

Hot favourites to win the cup were new league comers Scotfit who despite losing their second game of the season remained unbeaten for the rest of the year. They narrowly beat Bancyfelin 2-1 (Peter Kelly, Gary Ralph) in the first round before winning 3-1(Dai Saies, Colin Thorpe & Micky Davies) at RNAD Milford in the next round having trailed for most of the match.

They met third from bottom Neyland II in the semi-final who put up a brave fight before losing 5-3. A Colin Thorpe hat-trick and one each for Chris Walters and Dai Saies cancelled out goals from Brian Keane, Alan Spence and Dai Wright.

In the final they needed a replay to defeat Pennar Robins II with the first game ending 2-2 where Maurice Jones was outstanding in the Robins goal. Chris Walters gave Scotfit the lead only for Martin Powell to equalise and Kenny Lawrence to put the Robins in the lead before half time. It took a Dai Saies last minute goal to force the replay which Scotfit won 4-0.

WWFA Intermediate Cup

Johnston became the first side to reach the final since Fishguard Sports in 1973-74 when they had beaten Hafod Brotherhood in the final 3-1. However Johnston could not repeat this success and went down 3-1 to St Josephs in the final played on the Vetch field in Swansea. Chris Walters had given Johnston the lead but goals from Jeffrey Ash, Paul Putty and Neil Williams saw the Swansea side lift the trophy.

Johnston’s campaign had started with a 5-1 win away to Waterloo Wanderers with a Martin Davies hat-trick and one from Chris Walters and Stephen Thorpe completing the scoring. The second round saw a narrow 4-3 victory at Cam Gears with Huw Brophy scoring a last minute goal in extra time to add to goals from Martin Davies, Richard James and Tony Algieri. Brophy, James and Algieri were also on target in the next round with Micky Algieri and Mike Griffiths adding further goals to record a 5-3 victory over Ferry Wanderers. Another home draw saw them beat Townhill/Mayhill 2-0, with left back Gary Stephens netting both goals, before a lone Martin Davies goal in the quarter final saw them progress to the semi. Here they met West End at Porthryd and a brace from Martin Davies saw them make the final.

The only other Pembrokeshire side to make any sort of progress were Merlins Bridge who made the fourth round. Here they were held at home to a 1-1 draw when opponents Dafen Welfare equalised with only two minutes to go. The replay saw the Llanelli side triumph 3-0.
