Division 1

The season started with all of last year’s top five losing at least one of their first three games and the last unbeaten record was Solva who remained unbeaten until the first Saturday in October. Their unbeaten run included a 5-1 success over Fishguard Sports when Barry Smith (3), David Howells and Roger Williams were the goalscorers. They eventually lost 3-0 away to Monkton Swifts thanks to goals from Charlie Evans, Kenny Lawrence and Roy Davies.

Last years’ defending champions Carew had a disastrous start losing six of their first nine games, and at the end of October they lay in 10 th position nine points behind the current league leaders Merlins Bridge. They lost a further three games up until the end of December, with the full league table after the fixtures on 31st December looking as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Kilgetty 19 15 2 2 63 20 43 32 2 Merlins Bridge 18 12 3 3 57 31 26 27 3 Goodwick United 17 12 3 2 52 28 24 27 4 Fishguard Sports 18 12 2 4 52 29 23 26 5 Hakin United 18 11 4 3 36 25 11 26 6 Monkton Swifts 16 11 2 3 34 18 16 24 7 Solva 18 10 3 5 47 29 18 23 8 Milford United 14 7 3 4 33 21 12 17 9 Carew 18 7 2 9 38 36 2 16 10 Neyland 19 6 4 9 30 41 -11 16 11 Narberth 18 4 5 9 31 35 -4 13 12 Johnston 19 4 4 11 38 55 -17 12 13 Milford Athletic 17 4 3 10 24 35 -11 11 14 St Ishmaels 20 3 5 12 32 54 -22 11 15 MHPC 19 2 5 12 27 61 -34 9 16 Pendine P & EE 18 2 5 11 33 60 -27 8 17 New Hedges/ 18 2 1 15 19 68 -49 5

Goodwick United, who had started the season very poorly with two defeats in their first four games, were currently on a 13 match unbeaten run and on the last Saturday of the year had beaten Merlins Bridge 1-0 thanks to a Kevin Merry goal. This gained some revenge for their 5-0 defeat at the Bridge back in September when goals from Roy Fairhurst (2), Mario Rabbiotti, Derek Thomas and Trevor James had given the Bridge a convincing victory.

One of the games of the season had also taken place on the last Saturday of the year when St Ishmaels lost at home to Pendine 5-6! Martin Davies, Robert Cockburn, and a Paul John hat- trick scored for Tish with Frank Roberts, Clive Isles (2), Des Parcell, Andy Parcell and a last minute Bernard Adams goal replying for Pendine. Steven Scales had earlier missed a penalty for Tish, denying them a point which turned out to be crucial at the year end.

Kilgetty, who led the table at this point, had won 12 of their previous 13 games. Their only setback was a narrow 3-2 defeat away to Carew. Alan Brindley and Ronnie Hurst had scored for Kilgetty with David Arthur, Peter Hall and Mike Allen replying for Carew. Their run included back to back wins at home against MHPC 7-1 (Hat-tricks for Graham Jenkins and Alan Brindley with one for Wallace Howells) and then away 3-1 (Steve Turner, Alan Brindley and an own goal)

On the 14/1/78 bottom of the table New Hedges/Saundersfoot dented Hakin United’s championship hopes with a surprising 5-1 victory thanks to goals by Richard Eastlake, Gary McNeilly, Seth Hodder, Stuart McKay and Jeremy Shute with Spike Jones replying for the visitors. However Hakin made up for this defeat at the end of the month by winning 3-0 at Merlins Bridge thanks to Jeff Lloyd, Maurice Coe and Dai Goffin. However their inconsistency came to the fore once again with a 2-1 defeat on 11/2/78 to Pendine who had replaced New Hedges/Saundersfoot at the foot of the table. Gary Scott and Graham Cole scored for Pendine, with Roy Dawes pulling one back for Hakin. Their championship hopes vanished a fortnight later with a 2-1 away defeat to Neyland.

March saw Merlins Bridge record a crucial 3-2 victory over Monkton Swifts and when league leaders Kilgetty suffered a 1-0 defeat against Milford United, thanks to a Mike Griffiths goal, the Bridge moved to the top of the table. However in addition to the Bridge and Kilgetty, Goodwick United and Fishguard Sports were also still in contention.

The first set of midweek fixtures saw Goodwick United travel to their north county rivals and record a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Mike Robb and Stuart Wilson with Nigel Morgan replying for the Sports. This gave them the double over their opponents for the first time since the 1956/57 season.

Thus going into April the top of the table stood as follows, with only the top three having a realistic chance of winning the title:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Merlins Bridge 26 19 3 4 86 38 48 41 2 Kilgetty 24 19 2 3 78 27 51 40 3 Goodwick United 23 18 3 2 80 33 47 39 4 Fishguard Sports 24 17 2 5 73 38 35 36 5 Monkton Swifts 25 17 2 6 64 34 30 36

On the first weekend the Bridge dropped points following a 2-2 draw with Milford Athletic whilst Kilgetty won 2-0 at Tish. Goodwick United meanwhile were involved in 9 goal thriller at Hakin United. Goalscoring went as follows Shaun Roche (0-1) Daisy Picton (1-1), Roy Dawes (2-1) Mike Robb (2-2 HT) Anthony Leahy (2-3), John Maclean (pen) (3-3) Dai Hughes (3-4) Spike Jones (4-4) Dai Hughes (4-5).

The next round of midweek fixtures saw Merlins Bridge defeat Kilgetty 3-2 and with Goodwick winning 4-1 at Pendine the championship looked to be heading to the north of the county. Two more homes wins over Johnston (2-1) and Monkton Swifts (1-0) strengthened this position and when they met Kilgetty at home on 15/4/78 two Stuart Wilson goals wiped out the one by Steve Turner. On the same day Merlins Bridge lost 3-2 at Milford United leaving Goodwick only needing one point from their last three games to clinch the championship. This they duly did with a 3-2 win at Milford Athletic with another Stuart Wilson brace and a penalty from Mike Robb.

They finished the season with a 2-1 defeat at the defending champions Carew, and a 3-3 draw against Kilgetty. Their success had been based on a 26 match unbeaten run that had included 14 consecutive wins. Kilgetty, who had led the table up until 1/4/78 finished sixth after losing five and drawing two of their last seven games

At the other end of the table the position with three games to go couldn’t have been closer, with New Hedges/Saundersfoot having just beaten Solva 2-0 and Pendine having managed a 1-1 draw against Milford Athletic, leaving the bottom of the table as at 8/4/78 as follows:

15 St Ishmaels 29 4 5 20 48 94 -46 13 16 Pendine P & EE 29 4 6 19 48 98 -50 13 17 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 29 6 1 22 45 95 -50 13

St Ishmaels then lost to Milford United 3-1, with New Hedges/Saundersfoot and Pendine drawing, the former against Neyland (2-2) and the latter 1-1 against Milford United.

Pendine then picked up another point in a 1-1 draw against Milford Athletic, and with the other two teams losing their last two games this proved enough to keep Pendine in the first division.

St Ishmaels had been relegated losing 13 of their last 14 games with the one bright spot being a 2-1 win over Carew where Martin Davies and Keith Guppy were the scorers.

Some of the leading scorers during the season were Mike Robb (21) & Adi John (16) (Goodwick United), Roy Fairhurst (24) and Dekker Thomas (21) (Merlins Bridge), Paul Richards (20) (Fishguard Sports), Roy Davies (18) (Monkton Swifts), Graham Jenkins (21) & Alan Brindley (19) (Kilgetty), Paul John (20) (St Ishmaels), John Watts (18) (Johnston), Peter Price (18) (Milford United).

The figures in brackets are the minimum number of league goals scored and would have been greater if all goal scorers were available.

Division Two

The Second division saw newly promoted Merlins Bridge II remain unbeaten until the turn of the year only dropping four points out of a possible 38, and leading the table by four points from Fishguard Sports II. 4 th placed Angle had four games in hand over the leaders and could have gone within a point if they won all these games.

Angle travelled to the Bridge on 1/10/77 when an Alan Pearce penalty was enough to record a crucial 1-0 win for the homesters. The Bridge had also seen off high flying RAF Brawdy 5- 2 earlier in the season thanks to goals from Pearce (2), Mike Ellis (2) and Michael Thomas.

Come back of the season must have been Goodwick United II recovery at Merlins Bridge II at the end of September. Trailing 5-0 with 15 minutes to go and 5-1 with five minutes to go, they fought back to earn a very unlikely point. Jeff Dawes (2), Tim Green (2) and Michael Thomas had put the Bridge five nil up, but goals from Jeff Wilson (2), Terry Keegan (2) and Mike Robb earned Goodwick a point.

As at 31/12/77 the top of the table stood as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Merlins Bridge II 19 15 4 0 67 25 42 34 2 Fishguard Sports II 19 13 4 2 54 23 31 30 3 RAF Brawdy 18 13 0 5 78 36 42 26 4 Angle 15 12 1 2 59 18 41 25 5 St Clears 18 12 1 5 68 28 40 25 6 Camrose 19 11 3 5 59 27 32 25

The first fixture of the new year saw Angle avenge their earlier defeat against the Bridge with a 4-1 success. Norman Cook (2), Peter Thomas and Nigel Arthur netted for the village side with Roy Fairhurst with a penalty scoring for the Bridge. This defeat seemed to unsettle the Bridge who then lost two of their next three fixtures, a 2-1 away defeat to RAF Brawdy, and then a 2-0 home defeat to second placed Fishguard Sports II, with Ken Harries and Nigel Morgan netting for the visitors.

This crucial win for the Sports seemed to have set them up for a final championship push though only three points from their next five games severely dented these hopes and it looked as if the door was being left open for Angle with the top of the table as at 1/4/78 looking like:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Merlins Bridge II 27 19 5 3 86 37 49 43 2 Angle 25 20 2 3 98 31 67 42 3 RAF Brawdy 27 19 1 7 107 48 59 39 4 Fishguard Sports II 25 17 4 4 69 35 34 38

However from this point onwards Angle lost five of their next six games. This included a 0-4 home defeat to one of their nearest rivals Fishguard Sports II and a further 4-5 home defeat to St Clears on 25/4 handed the championship to the Bridge. The Bridge then completed their season with a 2-0 success away to Pennar Robins.

Going into the final game Angle knew that if they won at Fishguard Sports and RAF Brawdy were defeated at Narberth they would still sneak into the promotion places. Howver neither happened; Brawdy won 4-1 and they lost 5-3.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Merlins Bridge II 32 23 5 4 99 43 56 51 2 Fishguard Sports II 32 21 6 5 85 43 42 48 3 RAF Brawdy 32 22 3 7 122 55 67 47 4 Angle 32 21 2 9 109 52 57 44 5 Haverfordwest County 32 20 3 9 67 45 22 43 6 Camrose 32 16 8 8 91 50 41 40 7 St Clears 32 17 4 11 104 65 39 38 8 Goodwick United II 32 15 6 11 78 64 14 36 9 Monkton Swifts II 32 13 5 14 93 80 13 31 10 Pennar Robins 32 12 5 15 61 57 4 29 11 Milford Athletic II 32 11 6 15 69 75 -6 28 12 Pembroke Boro 32 11 5 16 70 67 3 25 13 Hakin United II 32 9 7 16 55 72 -17 25 14 Carew II 32 7 6 19 51 99 -48 20 15 Narberth II 32 8 3 21 57 106 -49 19 16 Solva II 32 5 4 23 56 136 -80 14 17 Clarbeston Road 32 2 0 30 30 188 -158 4

Division 3

Division three saw seven new teams enter the league with Newcastle Emlyn expected to be the team to beat, and despite losing their first game 4-2 away to New Hedges/ Saundersfoot II they only suffered a further 3 defeats all season.

However it was Manorbier United who remained unbeaten up to the turn of the year with the top five being as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Manorbier United 20 15 5 0 84 21 63 35 2 Kilgetty II 21 16 2 3 85 30 55 34 3 Steynton United 19 15 1 3 89 37 52 31 4 Newcastle Emlyn 19 14 1 4 76 28 48 29 5 Johnston II 21 13 1 7 71 42 29 27

On 21/1/78 the top two met each other at Kilgetty with the homesters inflicting a 2-1 defeat on their visitors and replacing them at the top of the table. Norman James and Mike Stewart scored for the homesters with Paul Griffiths replying for the visitors.

None of the top four suffered a further defeat until 25/3/78 when Steynton suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat away to Pennar Robins II and Kilgetty lost 3-1 on their trip north to Newcastle Emlyn, Graham Hicks (2) and Hywel Morris netted for the homesters with Ronnie Hurst netting for the visitors.

Thus at the beginning of April the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Manorbier United 27 20 6 1 123 31 92 46 2 Steynton United 28 22 2 4 141 54 87 46 3 Kilgetty II 27 20 3 4 104 40 64 43 4 Newcastle Emlyn 26 20 2 4 106 37 69 42

Manorbier then won their next three games but then inexplicably lost in midweek 2-1 at home to 11 th placed Neyland allowing Steynton to go top. However the Milford side subsequently lost their last game of the season 7-1 at home to 7 th placed RAF with Ken Ryan scoring 4 of the airmen’s goals.

With Kilgetty beating Haverfordwest County 4-2 and Newcastle Emlyn winning 4-1 at St Ishmaels with only one fixture left the table was as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Kilgetty II 32 25 3 4 123 45 78 53 2 Manorbier United 31 23 6 2 132 36 96 52 3 Newcastle Emlyn 31 25 2 4 134 41 93 52 4 Steynton United 32 25 2 5 156 64 92 52

Manorbier travelled to Newcastle Emlyn for the last game knowing that a draw would see both sides promoted. However the homesters ran out 5-2 victors, thus giving them the championship and leaving their opponents just outside the promotion places.

The Emlyn’s success had been based on a 14 game unbeaten run at the end of the season, 13 of which were wins, with Manorbier’s defeat at home to Neyland proving very costly.

Personal Footnote

20/8/77 saw me play my first ever game in the league with Johnston II when we lost 6-2 away to Kilgetty. The team on the day was George O’Donnell, Trevor Morgans (player manager), Gary Thomas (captain) Dai John, Chris Collins, Glyn Ruloff, Santos, Chris (Gaga) Richards, Gwyn Griffiths, Glen Murray and myself with Ian (Chipo) Jenkins as sub. Gwyn Griffiths scored both our goals with Roy Lewis (2), Steve Lewis (2), Darrell Lewis and Barkley Prout scoring for Kilgetty. Highlight of the season was undoubtedly a 5-4 success away to Newcastle Emylyn in December where Stephen Thorpe, Dai John, Chris Richards, Dai Gibbon and a last minute Gwyn Griffiths goal gave us victory over the league leaders. One other result that sticks out was a 9-1 success over New Hedges/Saundersfoot II where Chris Rees, Gwyn Griffiths and John Summons all scored hat-tricks. I also made my first team debut that season as a sub in a 5-4 defeat to Milford United where Peter Price (2), Mike Griffiths (2) and Simon Hackett scored for Milford with Charlie Edwards (2), Mick Algieri and Alan Cunningham scoring for Johnston. Happy memories!

Senior Cup

The first round saw several local derbies with Monkton Swifts beating Pennar Robins 1-0 thanks to a Byron Phillips goal, Hakin United beating Milford rivals Steynton United 4-1 thanks to a Roy Dawes hat trick, and Johnston overcoming Haverfordwest County 5-4 in a replay after the first game had ended 1-1.However the performance of the round fell to Camrose from division two who beat first division Milford Athletic 3-0 thanks to goals from Roger Mathias, Derek Watts (penalty) and Brian Cutler.

This success was matched in the next round when they overcame another first division side Fishguard Sports 2-1 thanks to goals by Brian Cutler and Mike Tucker with Steve Meaney replying for the Sports. Division one leaders Kilgetty won 5-0 at local rivals New Hedges/Saundersfoot with Alan Brindley netting a brace for the visitors.

This set them up with a quarter final tie against the giant killers Camrose, and at the first time of trying the under dogs led 1-0 thanks to a Brian Cutler goal though due to adverse weather conditions the match was postponed at half time. In the rearranged fixture the village side were unable to repeat their cup heroics losing 2-0, with Alan Brindley and a Geoff Flood deflected own goal giving the division one side a semi- final spot against Milford United who had disposed of Monkton Swifts 2-1 thanks to goals from Dave Roberts and Peter Price.

The semi-finals saw Merlins Bridge defeat Goodwick United 2-0 thanks to two Dekker Thomas goals, with their opponents having the misfortune to have two players sent off whilst Kilgetty overcame Milford United 2-1 thanks to two Alan Brindley goals with Simon Hackett pulling one back for the Robins.

The final at Marble Hall saw the south county side take a 1-0 lead thanks to an Alan Brindley header, though this was wiped out by another header scored by Dekker Thomas leaving the half time score 1-1. With the game moving into injury time Thomas was involved again and his deep cross was met at the far post by substitute Roy Fairhurst whose header secured the cup for the Bridge for the first time, with skipper Tally John having the honour of receiving the cup from the league chairman Terry Hancock.

Divisional Cups

The second division cup saw two of the top sides meet in the first round when Merlins Bridge II entertained Angle. Roy Fairhurst gave the Bridge an early 2-0 lead, but two Ronnie Watkins goals and one each from Roger Scourfield and a late Peter Hughes free kick saw Angle record a 4-3 success. Michael Davies netted the other Bridge goal. Shocks of the round was bottom placed Clarbeston Road beating 4 th placed RAF Brawdy 3-0 with Derek Mathias the Road goalkeeper scoring from his own penalty area, and Carew II defeating Senior cup giant killers Camrose 2-1, thanks to goals from Peter Hall and John Hay.

However both sides progressed no further in the next round with Clarby crashing to Angle 5- 0 and Carew losing out to Monkton Swifts II 3-0 in the second replay.

The semi-finals threw together north county rivals Fishguard Sports II and Goodwick United II who met at Clarbeston Road. Steve Meaney and Brian Jones scored for the Sports in normal time with Pat Pearce and Dai Hughes replying for Goodwick. The tie was settled in the second half of injury time with a Ken Harries goal to give the Sports an opportunity to retain the cup. Their opponents in the final were Angle for whom Peter Hughes (2) and Nigel Arthur had given them a comfortable victory over local rivals Monkton Swifts II.

The final played at the Bridge Meadow saw the Sports retain their title with a 3-0 win, with Nigel Morgan being the star of the show with a hat-trick.

Both sides had achieved major scalps on their way to the final with Johnston accounting for Newcastle Emlyn 3-2 in the semi- final held at RAF Brawdy with Gwyn Griffiths proving himself to be the hero with a well taken hat-trick. New Hedges major success had come against local rivals Kilgetty in a second round replay when goals by Walter Marr and an own goal cancelled out a strike by Norman James.

The final was played at London Road with New Hedges/Saundersfoot running out 2-1 winners. Dai John had given Johnston a one nil lead but goals from Malcolm Brace and Pat Curry saw the cup return with the south county side.
