SUMMARY: 1. This diary covers the activities of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines during the period 1-30 November 1950. At the beginning of the period this battalion was attached to the let Marines with the mission or defending WONSAN Korea. On 2 November this battalion reverted to 5th Marines control and received orders to be prepared to leave WONSAN for HAM­ HUNG by train. Upon arrival at HA..l\I!!UNG railroad station the battalion moved to SONGRUNG-NI assembly area. On 4 November the battalion moved by truck convoy to KYONGHUNG-NI where it took up defensive positions and patrolled this area until 9 November. On 10 November the battalion moved west about four (4) miles on the Main Supply Route and was assigned missions to guard the road, railroad and defena the right flank of the Division, and remained in this position until 13 November, On 14 November the battalion embarked aboard trucks for KOTO­ RI and remained in this area until lB November. During this period the battalion's mission was to _send out patrols in order to make contact with the enemy. On 19 November the battalion displaced to HUDONG-NI where it remaii}ed until 25 November. During this period the battalion was !lBBigned a defensive pos­ ition and to extensively patrol the area. On 26 November the battalion moved to YUDAM-NI where it went into the attack on 27 November against the enemy. Enemy counterattacks caused a halt in our advance and the battalion remained in this area until the end of the period,

CHRONOLOGICAL NARRATIVE; DATE 1. The battalion command post was set up in a school on out­ skirts of WONSAN. Korea. Winter clothing was issued to Dog, Easy, Fox, and ~veapons company. Received warning order from 5th Marines to be prepared to move by train and motor convoy to RAMHUNG. Twenty one (21) Prisoners of War captured and sent under guard to t4e loth Army Corps stockade at WONSAN. Weather partly cloudy and cool. Three (3) men sick and evacuated. 2. This battalion reverted to 5th Marines control. The ad­ vance party left 1vONSAN at 0?10 and arrived at RAMHUNG at 1400. Organi~ational vehicles left at 0930 and arrived at 1530. The remainder of the battalion departed by train at 0940 and arrived at 1815. The battalion moved from the HA}UfUNG railroad station by truck convoy to SONGHUNG-NI assembly area. Weather cloudy and cool. Costal terrain flat and rolling and inland terrain very mountainous. One (1) man sick evacuated. 3. This battalion located in assembly area at SoNrnrJNG-NI. Remainder of winter clothing issued. Personnel participated in athletics and care and cleaning of equ_ipment during the day. Received warning order from 5th Marines to move by truck convoy to K~ONGHUNG-NI. Weather sunny and cool. Two (2) men sick evacuated •. Joined three (3) replacements. 4. Received orders to relieve a ROK battalion defending the sector at CV 835?. A reconnaissance party left at 0630 and arrived at ROK battalion command post at 0845 to re­ ceive local situation. Departed by truck convoy from assembly area at SONGHUNG-NI at 0815 and arrived at KYONG­ HUNG-NI at 1145. Attached units are ?5MM Anti-Tank section, 4.2 mortar section, "B" Battery, 11th Marines. The battalion consolidated positions and all companies were in position prior to 1530. Weather cloudy and cool. Terrain mountain­ ous and vegetation scrubby brush and scattered pine. Pro­ moted thirty seven (3?) corporals to sergeant and sixteen (16) privates first class to corporal. Battalion rear ad­ ministrative section remained with the regimental rear ad­ ministrative unit at HAMHUNG.

Fox company patrol consisting of one (1) squad left at 08QO with orders to remain at TA 8657 T until 1700. Patrol resulted in apprehension of seventy three (73) men and thirty three (33) communist sympathizers who were turned over to civilian a~thorities for disposit­ ion. Ee.sy company patrol consisting of one (1) platoon reinforced departed at 0835 with orders to proceed to TA- 7959 C and to remain in position during the day and arrive at command post area prior to darkness, Dog company less one (1) platoon left by motorized patrol at 0900. One (1) OY plane and two (2) corsair planes were requested to cover this patrol. At 1112 Dog company patrol was forced to dis­ embark from trucks due to impassability of road and proceed to sector by foot. At 1245 the patrol contacted about twenty (20) enemy but the enemy withdrew. Dog company patrol was ordered to secure the ridge at TA 8369 A-D. This patrol secured the ridge at 1545 and returned to command post area at 1715. Weather cloudy and cold. Terrain flat and mountain­ ous. Vegetation scrubby brush and scattered pine, One {1) man killed due to accidental discharge of weapon. Admin­ istrative report submitted. 6. Two (2) reconnaissance patrols and one {1) combat patrol was ordered for this date. Dog company patrol left at 0815 and returned at 1620 making no enemy contact, Fox company pat­ rol left at 0830 and returned at 1616 making no enemy contact. Easy company patrol left at 0840 to TA 7'765 M by trucks and disembarked at 1040 and proceeded on foot along railroad track to TA 7767 M. This patrol covered by oy; OY spotted about fifteen (15) enemy troops at TA 7770 M at 1400 and called airstrike. Patrol did not get to airstr1ke location to determine results. This patrol returned at 1600. One (1) communist agent apprehended, Weather sunny and warm, Six (6) men sick evacuated,

7. Five (5) patrols were planned of which four (4) were recon­ naissance patrols and one (1) was motorized. All patrols left command post area by 0830 and patrol No. 5 was covered by air. Patrol No. 5 reported road from U8358 to U9963 good for trafficability for all vehicles. All patrols re­ turned to command post prior to 1630. Patrols reported no enemy contact, Weather clear and cold. one (1) officer and five (5) enlisted sick evacuated. One (1) officer emergency leave to United States of America.

B. Three (3) patrols of squad size were sent out forward of our defensive positions. No enemy contact made by patrols. Easy company patrol captured three (3) Prisoners of War consisting of one (1) captain, one (1) sergeant major and one (11 private. Weather clear and cold. Utilized fifty (50) Korean labors. One {1) man returned to duty. Three (3) men sick evacuated. 9. Two (2) motorized patrols and one (l) combat patrol of squad size were sent out. Dog company, the combat patrol, was assigned objective 6859 K and reached it at 1245. This patrol did not go beyond this point due to limitations of time and terrain difficulties. Ten (10) enemy troops were sighted at TA 6759 F but were not fired on due to long range. One (1) Chinese Prisoner of War was captured_ at TA 6858 D. Easy and Fox company patrols did not make any enemy contact. Received warning order to move west about four (4) miles - mission to guard road, railroad and Divisions right flank. Weather warm and cloudy. Two (2) men returned to duty and three (3) men sick evacuated.

10. Command Post displaced to TA 7951 E-3 at 0900. Companies displaced at half-hour intervale. Displacement of battalion completed by 1500. All unserviceable vehicles sent to Motor Transport Battalion for repair. Three {3) engineer personnel joined battalion at command post. W'eather sunny and cool. One (1) Prisoner of War captured. One (1) man returned to duty. Three (3) men sick evacuated. 11. A patrol consisting of one (1) rifle squad and one (1) officer from Dog company, accompanied by a CIC agent, were dispatched to a locality in the vicinity of SINRt~G in an attempt to apprehend a group of North Korean Agents. Upon reaching this vicinity one (1) agent was observed leaving the area. No contact could be made with him. Six {6) addit­ ional patrols were dispatched to assigned areas with no enemy contact being made. All patrols returned prior to 1600. Thirteen (13} Prisoners of liar were captured. Weather clear and cold. Joined twelve (12) Navy corpsmen and nineteen (19) men as replacements. Eight (8) men sick evacuated. 12. Five (5) patrols were dispatched forward of our defensive positions. All patrols returned reporting no enemy contact. Regimental Commander presented five men with decorations ie. two (2) Silver Stars and three (3) Bronze Stars. 'l'leathe;, ' cloudy and cold. 13. Patrols were planned and executed. Patrols No. l and !!o. 3 were cancelled due to contemplated move and heavy traffic on these routes. Forward echelon departed at 1330 for new command post at TA 5559 E. Forward echelon consisted of the S-3 and Dog company. Battalion Executive Officer was trans­ ferred to the 1st Battalion as Battalion Commander, Weapons Company Commander became new Executive Officer. Weather cold and cloudy. Temperature 18 to 20 degrees above at 0800. Three (3) men sick evacuated. 14. Remainder of battalion embarked aboard trucks at 0855 moving to TA 5559 E 1 at the village of KOTO-RI arriving at 1645. All companies were in defensive positions prior to 1700. Weather extremely cold and sunny. Terrain very mountainous. Snow fell during move to this new position. Temperature was 5 degrees below zero. One (1) man returned to duty and two (2) men were sick evacuated. 15. One (1) motorized patrol of squad size left at 1230 to patrol along Main Supply Route to 7th Marines command post at TA- 5170 0. Patrol returned at 1545 reporting no enemy contact. Two (2) more patrols were sent out, one at 1~00 and 1500, both returning prior to 1600 reporting no enemy contact. Weather, very windy, sunny and cold. Temperature about five (5) degrees above zero. Found body of Army Pilot and noti­ fied Graves Registration. One (1) officer and one (1) man returned to duty. Joined seven (71 officers and one hundred three {103) men as replacements. Five (5) Prisoners of War captured. -

16. A squad outpost was established about 1800 at TA 5359 0 in the village of HOMADAE-RI and another at TA 5459 C at the end of VMO airstrip.in anticipation of an attack as reported by a Counter Intelligence Corps Agent. No attack materilaized and no enemy contact was made during the night. Five (5) patrols were sent out and all returned safely reporting no enemy activity. Weather sunny and slightly warmer. Temperat­ ure was about 25 degrees above &ero. One (1) man returned to duty and thirteen (13) men were sick evacuated. 17. Five (5) patrols were sent out, three (3) of which were of squad size foot patrols and two (2) of which consisted of motorized reinforced platoons. Th~se two (2) motori&ed patrols detrucked and continued on foot to assigned areas. All patrols returned safely and reported no enemy activity.

Joined one (1) officer replacement and twelve (12) men were sick evacuated. 18. Seven (7) patrols were sent out forward of our defensive positions. All patrols returned reporting no enemy activity. Weather cloudy and cold. Temperature about fifteen (15) de­ grees above zero. Nine (9) men were sick evacuated. 19. In compliance with verbal orders from the Regimental Commander, the battalion displaced to HUDONG-NI area TA 5376 A (See RCT-5 Operation Order 37-50 CONF and RCT-5 Administrative Order 5-50). Security and advance echelons departed at 0830. All companies were in new battalion sector prior to 1630. Supporting arms were in position prior to 1730. Temperature about thirty (30) degrees above zero. One (1) officer re­ turned to duty and one (1) officer joined as replacement,- . 20. Four (4) patrols were planned and executed over various routes and to reach observation points. Patrol No. 1 composed of a reinforced platoon from Fox company departed at 0830. In­ dividual squads branched off from this platoon to search out assigned areas. This patrol returned at 1430 with eight (8) captured Prisoners of War deserters. Patrol No. 2 was com­ posed of a squad from Easy company. It departed at 0830 and went to TA 5677 B and remained during the day observing 1t 1 s assigned area. _This patrol returned at 1425 reporting no enemy activity. Patrol No. 3 was composed of a squad from Easy company and it departed at 0920 patrolling to TA- 5580 Q 2 and established an Out Post at this point. This patrol returned at 1440 reporting no enemy activity. Patrol No. 4 composed of a reinforced platoon from Dog company left at 0845 and sighted six (6) enemy troops at TA 5381 B. Air­ craft was contacted in the area and a request was made to strafe the sighted enemy. -Results_of the strafing could not be made. This patrol returned at 1500 reporting no further enemy activity. Weather sunny and warm with snow melting. Four (4) men returned to duty. Joined one (1) officer and ten (10) enlisted as replacements. Ten (10) men were sick evacuated. ·

21. Four (4) patrols were planned and executed. Patrol No. 1 from Dog company patrolled to TA 5780 K and made no contact with the enemy. Patrol No. 2 also from Dog company patrolled to TA 5580 Rand made no contact with the enemy. Patrol No. 3 from Fox company received small arms fire from TA 5682 R and TA 5582 Q 4.

Patrol No. 4 also from Fox company observed probably thirty (30) enemy troops at TA 5879 moving north and unable to keep visual contact to identify troops. All patrols returned prior to 1600. 11 B" Battery,. 11th :!f,arines returnea to 11th Marines control. One (1) officer presented Bronze Star. Weather clear and cold. One (1) man returned to duty, joined one (1) officer replacement, and one (1) man sick evacuated. 22. Three (3) patrols were planned and executed. All patrols departed about 0800 and returned prior to 1430, reporting no enemy activity. Preparations made to feed a turkey dinner following day. Weather cloudy and cold. Temperature about 28 degrees above zero. Two (2) officers returned to duty. Four (4) men sick evacuated. 23. Due to Thanksgiving dinner being served, three (3) patrols were organized in relays. Patrol No. 1 departed 0810 and proceeded to TA 5677 G where they established an outpost. This patrol was relieved at 1215 and secured at 1555. No enemy activity reported. Patrol No. 2 departed at 0800 and established an outpost at TA 5676 G. This patrol was re­ lieved at 1100 and secured at 1550. No enemy activity re­ ported. Patrol No. 3 departed at 0800 and established and outpost at TA 5573 I. This patrol was relieved at 1107 and secured at 1610, No enemy activity reported. An ex­ cellent roast turkey dinner with all trimmings served troops. V~rale excellent. Weather partly cloudy and sunny and cold all day. Two (2) men returned to duty. One (1) sick evacuated,

24. Received w~rning order to move to TA 5291. Received Regi­ mental Operation Order 38-50. Four (4) patrols were planned and executed. Patrol No. 1 departed at 0820 and established an outpost at TA 5777 and maintained it until 1327. This patrol secured at 1525. Patrol No. 2 departed at 0820 and established an outpost.at ~A 5573 I and maintained it until 1310. This patrol secured. at 1435. Patrol No. 3 departed at 0705 and returned at 1440. Patrol No. 4 departed at 0850 and returned at 1520. No enemy activity reuorted by patrols. Battalion Comffiander and Battalion S-3 made a reconnaissance to TA 5289 V. Battal- ion Commander and Bat alion S-3 made a reconnaissance with the Regimental Commander to TA 4773 and 4873. Battalion Commander held staff conference with all attached elements at 2200 on anticipated move the following day. At 1806 regimental message received which redesignated this battalion's zone of responsibility and directed. that. bur outpost out- aide of new zone be withdrawn. ~is message was executed. At 2155 a request was made to the Regimental Commander that a platoon of engineers with bulldozer and a provisional tank platoon with porcupine be attached on this date. This request was acknowledged. Receivea Regimental Operation Order 39-50 by phone and changes were made for planned movement. Weather sunny and very cold. Light snow flurries fell at 1520. Temperature about 15 degrees above zero. One (l) man returned to duty. One (1) man transferred. Three (3) sick evacuated. Joined one (1) replacement. 26. The Advance Party departed Command Post at 0830. The first serial motor convoy departed at 0900 and arrived in vicinity of YUDAM-NI at 1130. New Command Post was set UD at TA- 4080 2. At 1500 Battalion Commander and Battalion S-3 made a reconnaissance of assigned sector and effected liai­ son with the 7th Marines. At 7th Harines Command Post the Battalion Commander contacted the 5th Marines Regimental Comwander and he directed that this battalion's objective for the following day be changed to the high ground astride the road in the vicinity of TA 3483. Necessary liaison w~s made with the 7th Marines for night defense of area. At 1800, Easy company and the remainder of the battalion arriv~ ed in assembly area. Easy company tied in with elements of the 7th Marines to form a perimeter of defense. At 2000 Battalion Commander issued h~s verbal attack order for 27 November. General Plan of attack was to move out in column of companies Fox company I Dog comr)any I 75:1-lM Reco1lless Platoon, Forv;rard Coffi!IIand Post group, i!eapons company, and Easy company, along Main Supply Route to TA 3782 M. At this point Fox company was to move to the high ground and pro­ ceed along north aide of the Main Supply Route to battalion objective at TA 3483, with Dog company and remainder of battalion proceeding along Main Bupply Route, unless Dog company should be fired on from the high ground ~outh of the Main Supply Route in which instance Dog compeny would move to the high ground south of the Main Supply Route and pro­ ceed to their position of Battalion objective in ~A 3382.

Light snow flurries tell during the morning. Terrain very mountainous. 27. The battalion moved out as planned at 0700. About nine (9) roadblocks were encountered on !o!ain Supply Route in TA 3782 and TA 3882. Fox company bypassed these road­ blocks and the engineers cleared them while covered by Dog company. At about 0930 in TA 3782 J Fox company be­ gan receiving enemy small arms fire and automatic weapons fire from ridge in TA 3682. The 8H::M mortars and 4.2 mortars were ordered into position and began tiring on enemy positions. "B 11 Battery, 11th :V;.arines commenced firing missions at 1023. 75MM Recoilless section was called to reduce enemy pill-boxes in TA 3682. Under cover of Artillery and Mortar barrages Fox company moved to the high ground in TA 3782 C~ D, and E and Dog company moved along the valley in TA 3·r82 H, I, J, M, N, and o. At 1115 an airstrike was .called on ridge in TA 3682. Results of airstrlke were undetermined and command post displaced to TA 3881 D. Fox company moved across the valley and up the slope of hill in TA 3782 A where they began receiving a small amount of mortar fire, believed to be about 60MM mortar. Fox company cleared the ridge or enemy troops by 1430. Dog company moved to high ground in TA 3781 L, M, and I. Battalion began consolidating positions in TA- 3782-3781-3682 at 1430. The battalion command post was set up at TA 3782 P5, Supporting units were in position by 1600. Weather clear and freezing. Thirty-one (31) wounded and evacuated. Five (5) sick evacuated. 28. At about 272125 enemy troops estimated at two (2) in strength attacked the battalion attempting to penetrate between Fox and Easy com?anies in TA 3682 E. Attack con­ sisted or enemy creeping close to our lines, throwing hand­ grenades, and then rushing our lines tiring small arms. It was noted that many Sub-Thompson machineguns were being used by the enemy. 'l'his first attack lasted until 2400 · ~nich was replused by machinegun, small arms, mortar and artillery fire. The second attack began about 0315 again attempting to penetrate our lines on a wider front. This attack lasted until 0600 at which time the enemy withdrew. At 0730 a third attack was attempted in the center of Fox company line in TA 3682 HS and lasted until 0815. The

The new Command Post ~~s set up at 1413 at TA 4081 F I. Weather was partly cloudy and sunny and freezing. Snow fell during the night. Seven (7) killed in action. Twenty­ five (25) wounded and evacuated. Sixty (60) sick evacuat­ ed. Most of the sick evacuated WaS due to frostbitten feet and hands. Three {3) Chinese Prisoners of War captured. Estimated five hundred (500) chinese killed, 29. At 1035 Dog company sighted enemy troops in TA 3783 U and called artillery fire on them. Fox company received mortar fire at 1255; this was reported to the Regimental S-3 and an OY was instructed to find the enemy mortar position. At 1055 the Battalion Commander, Battalion S-3 and air officer departed the command post to inspect the defense of the battalion. A battalion outpost was established in TA 3881 K. Three (3) provisional platoons from the let Battalion, 11th Marines was attached to reinfor~e the de­ fense of the battalion. One (1) platoon each was assigned to Dog and Easy companies to be utilized as company reserve. The third platoon was attached to the command post for per­ imeter defense. Weather was cold with little wind blowin~. Snow fell during the night. Two (2) men ·returned to duty: Joined one (1) replacement. One (1) Chinese Prisoner of War captured. · 30. At 0110 received warning order to be prepared to move to new position. All com,anies were alerted. At 0300 Battalion S-3 received oral orders which directed thi.s battalion to relieve elements of the 7th Marines on the left and to establish a new defense line. At 0430 all company commanders were notified of the move. Easy com­ pany was directed to assume responsibility for the right half of the new line. Dog company was directed to cover the 7th Marines withdrawal with a reinforced olatoon on the high ground .lust to the left of Dog com-:oany' a pre­ sent position. ~he remainder of the company moved back to the left half of the new line and established a defense position. The platoon outpost to remain in position all day unless forced to withdraw from superior enemy forces, in any case to return to Dog comp~y's new position prior to darkness. Fox com~any remained in reserve, moving to the nose in vicinity of TA 4081. All companies were directed to make this move in such a manner that it would not appear to the enemy as a general withdrawal. This This move ws.s to begin immediately.
