By Sgt. Wayne A. Bufterbaugh

Perhaps some of you Windward Marines happened to be tuned to station KONA-TV at 5 p.m. last Sunday when lo-and-behold, there suddenly appeared the 's "MYSTERIOUS NOVAC." His sudden appearance was naturally not one of his many fetes of mass hypnotism and magic, but a guest appearance on one of Hawaii's popular Sunday afternoon TV shows, -Teievi Digest." actually, the "Mysterious Novac" is none other than 25-year-old S Sgt. John M. Novac, a mortar platoon sergeant with "Er Company, 2nd Battalion. A versatile young man to say the least, he is a professional musi- cian, magician, hypnctit escape artist and Marine, all five of which he carries out with skill and polish. Sgt. Novac began his stage career at the age of 16 when he formed his own seven-piece band. Although he is prone to admit it now-"All we could do is make a lot of noise," Novac muses-they must have had some talent be- cause one year after the "Kings of Swing" we-e formed, they teamed up with the late Professor John Steinhauer and began touring the country. Professor Steinhauer, aside from his many other talents, was a- established psychologist and hypnotist and it was from the versatile Professor that Novac learned the art of hypnotics. Another great from whom Novac learned his lessons was the im- mortal Houdini, master of the art of escape magic. Among the many "escape proof" devices Novac is able to free himself from are straight jackets-you can bring your own-and pad- locked mail bags. Right now, Mr. Mystery ha; a burning desire to be dangled from a helicopter in flight while bound in a straight jacket. Just what the finale will be after he has freed himself still has to be worked out. While he has yet to play the Orpheum Theater in New York, he did thrill an audience made up of Congressmen and Korean veterans at the Hotel Shorham in Washington, D.C., in l951. This engagement was followed up by appearing on the same bill with Les Paul and Mary Ford later that same year.

141111.111111111. 110, Marines, hospitalized vets and civilian audiences the world over - T $ 10,1111k * have thrilled to his amazing and varied performances. Since his arrival at Kaneohe, Novac has put on a show for his consany at Bellows Air Force recreation area and the Staff NCO club here. Last Saturday night's show at the Staff club was fast moving and full of laughs. As may be noted in the top left picture, even the sub- jects had themselves a time. Many hilarious hypnotic stunts "Mysterious Novac" puts his sub- jects from the audience through are not shown in thy pictures, but 11111111111111110 there is literally nothing he can not have his subject do or believe as long as it is not against the subject's morals. "ft Asked if hypnosis could be put to any beneficial use, Novac ex- plained in some detail about the fairly new method of painless child- birth by hypnosis. Explained the Mysterious Novac, "This method is coming into use quite extensively, and while it only works in four out of ten cases, those who are adaptable swear by it. The process must begin during prenatal care and carried through right up until the day of delivery. If at the last moment the doctor feels that the patient ;s fighting hypnosis in the slightest degree, then conventional deliv- ery is used." Soon after Novac graduated from boot camp in 1949, he was once again putting on shows for various clubs and organizations where- ever he stowed his seabag. When the United Nations intervened in i'sorea, Novac was shipped overseas. Although there was little time for outside activities, he did entertain the troops wherever and whenever there was time. Upon his return to the States after the truce, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he served with the Armed Forces police. LEFT: Ever take an afternoon off and run out to the track? Each person has a race ticket, a horse's name and the information that he will win a million dollars if his horse wins. Novac goes into his spiel, first giving one horse the lead, then another.

The anxious spectators are urging their horses on. But when finally the race is over, the losers shed a tear and the winner, unable to find his ticket (which Novac has taken), is all "shook up." You would be, too, if you had just lost a million dollars.

H&MS Champions Pose For Picture

According to Frank Veith, Hawaii Marine boxing coach, the All- Mc-ine tournament at Miami, Fla., the first week of April will be nothing but rough. Frank says there'll be lots of new faces in this year's fracas, and he looks for many new champs to emerge. Veith knows of at least three defending champs who'll be at Miami. They are his own spunky little Phil Ortiz, flyweight; Basil Black- ston, Lejeune bantam, and Ritchie Hill also from Lejeune, who last year won both the All-Marine and Inter-Service middle titles. Quantico's great heavy, Len Kanthal, may not show at Miami. In an exhibition bout a few weeks ago at Uline Arena, Washington, D.C., he suffered a fractured jaw, although he won the fight. Kanthal took the 1954 national Golden Glove crown, but lost to Lejeune's Bud House at El Toro in the All-Marines. IS PROOF OF !I s The sharpshooting Marine earned the first of the three "legs" on SHOOTING ABILITY the Distinguished Medal in April, 1953, when he fired one of the top scores at the Southeastern Division matches at Camp LeJeune, N. C. A month later, Millsap proved the first win was no fluke. Quantico, Va., was the host of the !953 Marine Corps matches, and Millsap walked off the range with a silver medal and the second "leg." Chuck's efforts at Quantico also earned for him something else. A chance to com- pete against some 600 other shooters at the Nationals at Camp Perry, Ohio, in September of the same year.

At Perry, just nine months after joining the Camp LeJeune pistol team and less than six months after firing his first shot in competition, Millsap won the third and final leg of the coveted Distinguished Medal. After his arrival at Kaneohe in August, 1953, Chuck won the title of Hawaii-Pacific Regional Pistol champ, and again journeyed to Camp Pe..ry. This time for a definite purpose. Tryouts were being held for the U. S. pistol team entry in an old U.S.-England-Canadian rivalry known as the Mayleigh Cup mat,:hes. The U. S. team had won the matches in 1952, and was out to repeat its triumph. Cn the basis of his cr'lness under pressure and all-around ability, he was selected 10 THE 1t< COMBINED to be one of men on the ultimately victorious U. S. team.
