CINEMA OBSCURA Sandra Gibson & Luis Recoder, Cinema Artists-in-Residence, Spring 2016 Mulberry Mix Gallery, April 4 – 18, 10am – 4pm daily

Two of the most innovative cinematic practitioners of their generation, Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder have built a rich body of experimental projection works that stretch the boundaries of “” to create minimal, yet inviting and immersive cinematic experiences.

Gibson & Recoder re-imagine the obscura, a centuries-old optical device, as a form of cinema at once ancient and contemporary. Their stunning camera obscura-based works will fill the Mulberry Mix Gallery with live, interactive projections.

A symposium on the camera obscura in art, cinema, , and philosophy Saturday, April 9, 12 – 4pm / Cinema House, 201 N. Mulberry Street

An interdisciplinary symposium on the camera obscura’s multiple historical identities: scientific device, philosophical model of vision, artistic tool, art object, and precursor to painting, , and cinema.

Presentations by: Sandra Gibson & Luis Recoder (Cinema Artists-in-Residence) Kim Coplin (Provost and Associate Professor of ) Sheilah Wilson (Assistant Professor of Art) Jonathan Walley (Associate Professor of Cinema) with discussion moderated by Steve Vogel (Professor of Philosophy)

The event will include screenings of short on the camera obscura. Gibson & Recoder’s camera obscura exhibition “Cinema Obscura” will be on view next door in the Mulberry Mix Gallery.
