Three hundred and eighty-nine species and 78 subspecies of orthopteroid insects (Blattodea, Mantodea, Phasmatodea, and Orthoptera) have published records for the state of Texas. This is the first such comprehensive checklist for Texas and should aid future work on these groups in this area. Introduction (Flook and Rowell, 1997). -

The drugstore beetle, Stegobium paniceum, is a pest of stored medicinal and aromatic plants. The heat tolerance of different stages from highest to lowest is young larvae, old larvae, eggs, adult and pupae. Heat treatments that control young larvae should control all insect stages. The LT90 for young larvae at 42, 45, 50, 55 and 60°C is 13, 10, 1.4, 0.06 and 0.05h respectively. La susceptibilité de différents stades de Stegobium paniceum (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) à différentes températures. Le stégobie des pharmacies, Stegobium paniceum, est un ravageur de plantes médicinales et aromatiques entreposées. La tolérance à la chaleur dans les différents stades, en ordre décroissant, s’illustre comme suit: jeunes larves, larves âgées, adultes et pupes. Les traitements thermiques qui contrôlent les jeunes larves devraient donc contrôler tous les stades d’insectes. New Canadian and Ontario Orthopteroid Records, and an Updated Checklist of the Orthoptera of Ontario

Ont. 145: 61–76 The following seven orthopteroid taxa are recorded from Canada for the first time: Anaxipha species 1, Cyrtoxipha gundlachi Saussure, Chloroscirtus forcipatus (Brunner von Wattenwyl), Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus (Davis), Camptonotus carolinensis (Gerstaeker), Scapteriscus borellii Linnaeus, and Melanoplus punctulatus griseus (Thomas). One further species, Neoconocephalus retusus (Scudder) is recorded from Ontario for the first time. An updated checklist of the orthopteroids of Ontario is provided, along with notes on changes in nomenclature. Published December 2014 Introduction Vickery and Kevan (1985) and Vickery and Scudder (1987) reviewed and listed the orthopteroid species known from Canada and Alaska, including 141 species from Ontario. A further 15 species have been recorded from Ontario since then (Skevington et al. 2001, Marshall et al. 2004, Paiero et al. 2010) and we here add another eight species or subspecies, of which seven are also new Canadian records. Notes on several significant provincial range extensions also are given, including two species originally recorded from Ontario on bugguide.net. Voucher specimens examined here are deposited in the University of Guelph Insect Collection (DEBU), unless otherwise noted. P. McCafferty and J. L. Stein2 A total of 67 species of long-horned grasshoppers and crickets were reported to occur in Indiana by Blatchley (1903) in his "Orthoptera of Indiana." Distributional information concerning thek species was sparse and has not been significantly supplemented since that time. Subsequent works which have dealt either heavily or exclusively with the Indiana fauna include Fox (1915), Blatchley (1920), Cantrall and Young (1954), and Young and Cantrall(1956). -

August, 2014 ======Nothing Wildly Exciting Has Come in Yet but the Summer Is Not Over
=========================================================================================== Vol. 18, No. 3 August, 2014 =========================================================================================== Nothing wildly exciting has come in yet but the summer is not over. A couple of notes from my backyard: The Japanese Beetle (Popillia japonica) population is down and as many as half the beetles have eggs of the parasitic fly Istocheta aldrichi on their backs. I pick beetles off my roses and raspberries leaving the parasitized beetles to produce more flies. What are others seeing for Japanese beetle populations? Secondly I have NO Lily Leaf Beetles (Lilioceris lilii) on my oriental lilies this year or last. Are others seeing this decline? I know my hand picking could not have decimated the population to extinction! Enjoy the rest of the summer; slow down and watch the insects. Important Proposed Change in Bylaws: Last year at the Annual Meeting, a proposal was floated to add a "Life Member" category for membership, with a total cost of $200 for membership for the entirety of the natural life of the subscribing member. This would necessitate a change in the M.E.S. Bylaws, and will be one of the important items on the agenda for the Annual Meeting in September (see p. 2). One of the interesting parts of my job is seeing various insects that catch people's attention and leads them to seek an answer as to what it is they have found and what it is doing there. The big is certainly on that list. Eastern Dobsonflies (Corydalus cornutus) are quite impressive at 120 mm or so in length, although a person recently thought she had the Giant Asian Dobsonfly that comes in at 210 mm. -

A study of the feculae of Orthoptera, their specificity, and the role which the insects'mouthparts, ahmen- tary canal, and food-habits play in their formation BY S. K. GANGWERE (Detroit) 1 (Láms. VII-VIII.) Many physiological studies have been carried out on different as- pects of the feculae ("feces") and their formation in Orthoptera (sens. lat.). Among the more important of these researches are ones by Nenjukov and Parfentjev (1929), Nielsen (1943), and Snipes and Tauber (1937), who described for various species the speed of transit of food through the alimentary canal, i. e., rate of formation of feculae; Chauvin (1946), the periodicity of defecation in four species ; Bro-wn (1937) and Chauvin (1941), the biochemistry of feculae ; Brown (1937), their structure ; and numerous authors, the general physiology of di- gestion and excretion in Orthoptera. Surprisirigly, however, purely descriptive studies on feculae have lagged. Frost (1928; 1959) revie- wed insect "scatology", but included scant material relative to Orthop- tera ; Weiss and Boyd (1950) described and figured the feculae of three species of Orthoptera, and Boldyrev (1928) did the same for a species of katydid ; and Day (1950) described, but did not figure, those of a species of cockroach. Nowhere, apparently, is there a study which elucidates the form and specificity, if any, of fecttlae in the major groups of Orthoptera, nor is there one which discusses satisfactorily the factors which influence their formation. A large population of O. bakeri was found in dry tropical forest west of Lake Nicaragua. The presence of O. allardi in Nicaragua is documented as the first record outside of the West Indies, and waveforms from the first known recordings of a singing maleO. leptogrammus are provided.
