Every day, ferries operated both by BC Ferries and smaller local providers ply the waters of the Salish Sea, the Inside Passage, Hecate Strait and points between to link communities together and to provide the crucial marine transportation services they depend on. Whether it’s for commuting, movement of freight, medical appointments, school trips or to help welcome tourists, daily life on the B.C. coast depends on a complex and intricate coastal ferry network that is too often

    BORDENTOWN TO ROEBLING VIA THE RIVERLINE The tracks for the light rail train you are riding on were laid upon the right of way of the Camden & Amboy Railway Company, chartered in 1830 along with the Delaware & Raritan Canal Company (known as the “Joint Companies”) and laid in the1830s between Camden and Amboy. Both railroad and canal officially opened in 1834, but sections of the railroad were in service for freight in1833 with horse-drawn cars. Tied together and pulled by steam tugs, canalboats carrying coal from the Lehigh and Schuylkill Valleys would cross the river from Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal. A cable ferry (1848-1912) and outlet locks at Lam- bertville and New Hope made the trip from the Lehigh Valley to Trenton much shorter, via the Feeder of the D & R. Schuylkill Valley coal continued to cross the river from Philadelphia and Bristol, entering the D&R at the Bor- dentown Lock (#1) at the mouth of Crosswicks Creek. What to look for Crosswicks Creek where it flows into the Delaware River Bluffs on the left on which Bordentown was built and the narrow strip of land under the bluffs where this train is traveling. Bordentown City is bordered on the south by Black’s Creek. Slips in the river shoreline on the lee side of Newbold Island where canalboats from Pennsylvania transferred their cargo (coal) to waiting trains or waited for entrance into Lock #1. Abandoned canalboats in the channel between Newbold Island and the shore, preserved because they are always wet. We have planned this trip for low tide so they can be seen.

    Ports & Terminals Handbook 2020 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The British Columbia Ports & Terminals report was researched and written by PrismTeck Inc. The report covers businesses along the 24,000 KM long coastline of British Columbia, starting from Vancouver and ending in Alaska. In order to gather the data for this report, a secondary study was conducted with the use of Google maps and the website of each business. The six-week process started with the identification of businesses along the coastline. To identify the one hundred and ten companies, we used Google maps as well as their websites. Our next step was to thoroughly research each company to know more about them. We then conducted a brief analysis to see where the companies stood in terms of company size and business value. Lastly, we wrote about each business, its facilities, location and more. Over a century ago, disillusioned Finnish immigrants responded to the lethal conditions of the coal mines they laboured in by creating Sointula, a socialist utopia. The ‘Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay, a group of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, have recently developed a land-based fish farm, Kuterra, in response to an ocean-based fish farming industry that threatens the wild salmon they have survived on since time immemorial. Lasqueti Island residents have responded to exclusion from access to traditional power sources by implementing self-generating, renewable energy into their off-grid community.

The BC NDP election platform states: We will ensure that the salmon farming industry does not endanger wild salmon by implementing the recommendations of the Cohen Commission, keeping farm sites out of important salmon migration routes, and supporting research and transparent monitoring to minimize the risk of disease transfer from captive to wild fish. Claire Trevena, the MLA for North Island and now Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure promised First Nation leaders in Alert Bay on April 23, 2017: “We will remove fish farms, we are committed to that and we can actually form government to make this happen and make sure that these territories and the North island are clear of fish farms” As you are aware, open net fish farms on the migratory paths of wild salmon have long been contentious on the British Columbia coast. Concerns exist regarding sea lice, disease, escaped non-native species, and the impact these contaminants are having on wild stocks – many of which are already significantly depleted. In recent weeks, tensions between some First Nations and operating farms has escalated in response to the salmon spill near the San Juan Islands. While action on this file is long overdue, a responsible and effective move to protect our wild salmon stocks now seems especially urgent.

    SOINTULA, BRITISH COLUMBIA: Aspects of a Folk Music Tradition as a Social Phenomenon BURT FEINTUCH Folk music is a social phenomenon.1 It exists within the contexts of certain patterns of human interaction. When we speak of a “tradition,” in the sense of “the folk music tradition,” we refer to a patterned social phenomenon in which utilization of a class of folkloric items occurs. A tradition is not composed of a repertoire, nor does it reside in individuals. Just as a traffic pattern is not dependent upon specific drivers, a folkloric tradition is social rather than individual.2 We have a large number of studies of the content of repertoires (item-oriented studies) and a number of studies which focus on the individual performer or repertoire-bearer (person-oriented studies), but we have little information concerning the social nature of a tradition. The following is an attempt to portray in a general sense a vital tradition of folk music in a small fishing community in British Columbia.3 Sointula, British Columbia, is a community of approximately five hundred people, about half of them first, second, or third generation Finnish-Canadians. The community is located on Malcolm Island, a small island about twelve miles long by an average of two miles wide, located in the Queen Charlotte Sound, between the northern portion of Vancouver Island and the mainland, about 185 air miles north of Vancouver. Although the earliest group to settle Malcolm Island was an English and Irish religious sect intending to establish a Christian utopian society, the first group to settle the island and remain for a significant length of time was a group of Finnish utopian socialists.4 The first substantial Finnish migration to British Columbia was com­ prised of laborers who arrived with construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
