You are greatly missed. iii ABSTRACT This thesis examines how three unique, isolated maritime communities located off the coast of British Columbia, Canada have responded to significant obstacles. Over a century ago, disillusioned Finnish immigrants responded to the lethal conditions of the coal mines they laboured in by creating Sointula, a socialist utopia. The ‘Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay, a group of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, have recently developed a land-based fish farm, Kuterra, in response to an ocean-based fish farming industry that threatens the wild salmon they have survived on since time immemorial. Lasqueti Island residents have responded to exclusion from access to traditional power sources by implementing self-generating, renewable energy into their off-grid community.

Mount Joy College is approximately 45 minutes from downtown Victoria, an hour from Victoria International Airport and 75 minutes from Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Please notify us of your arrival time. Airport pickup is available on request. The training centre is in a rural area on a small mountain. Our West Coast style buildings overlook hills and ocean. Full accommodation and food will be provided. Most of the accommodation is double, however you may be able to book a single room for an additional $10/night if requested in advance. Let us know if there is someone you would prefer to share a room with. The buildings are modern and recently constructed with temperature controls, so you will be warm and comfortable. AIR TRAVEL: Victoria International Airport is a short flight from either Vancouver or Seattle International Airports. There are many regularly scheduled flights available. Please check with your travel agent. BOAT TRAVEL: If you are arriving a few days early for some sightseeing in Vancouver or Seattle, you can reach Vancouver Island by ferry. The B.C. Ferries trip from Vancouver (Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal) to Victoria (Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal) is an hour and thirty-five minutes and costs under $20 per adult, and up to $60 for a vehicle.     BC Ferries Departure Bay Passenger Facilities | Nanaimo, BC Clive Grout Architect Inc. This BC Ferries’ project consists of a 28,000 sq ft building which includes ticketing and arrivals hall, baggage pick up and drop off, departures/arrivals corridor, retail shops, food court, washrooms, waiting lounge and escalator connection to the ship’s load/unload gangway. The project also includes an exterior courtyard and children’s area. Retail and food facilities are accessible to both foot and vehicle passengers. Wood was an excellent choice for ceiling and exterior fascia material as the architects desired to introduce a signature material to the landside facilities symbolic of the land and mountains of coastal B.C. as a contrast to the experience of the sea on the ships. In creating an image for the new passenger facilities, the architects selected the warmth and comfort of wood expressed on the ceiling, leaving the floors for utilitarian finishes and the walls for full glass to integrate visually with the spectacular setting on the edge of the water. The dramatic shape of the building and its roof, dictated by the site planning constraints, is enhanced by the prominence of the wood panels. The architects took two key steps to ensure the long-term durability of the fir veneer in coastal B.C.’s sea air and rain environment. The fascias are designed to slope sharply from the edge, keeping them out of the line of the direct rain. The entire assembly was initially rigorously and successfully tested by Forintek Canada for boiling water emersion, dry peel and room temperature delamination, giving the client and architect confidence in the application.
