Nten If the second half of YMO's original run is grossly overlooked and underappreciated (which it is, at least in the west), then Naughty Boys is YMO's most unsung work. It might also be their best. Easily YMO's poppiest record, but by no mean /merely/ "the YMO pop record", Naughty Boys stands in somewhat of a contrast to their previous work, particularly BGM and Technodelic, the two albums directly preceding it. Those albums both seemed to be headed towards a jagged edged, sometimes bone-chilling approach to synthesis and sampling, but it's worth noting, however, that both of those albums also saw YMO becoming more comfortable with vocal driven, pop-structured songs, in comparison to their earlier work that exemplified the mostly instrumental, hyper-melodic proto- techno that the band is usually associated with. Indeed, Naughty Boys is a very different beast then anything to come before it: a high gloss, spacious--glamorous, even!--synth-pop masterwork. The title alone is golden and when I first heard about the record I couldn't stop laughing. But Naughty Boys is nothing if not a full commitment to a style. On the cover we see the three "boys", each in their early to mid thirties, in softly colored sweaters and lite makeup, an appearance more suited to men at least 10 years younger. It's a humorous image and a strange new look for a band as established as YMO, but also one that radiates a sort of innocence. Boybands do often seem to be sold on a peculiar combination of naughtiness and innocence. But there's real tenderness there too. The back cover shows one hand from each band member gently holding on to the others. The boyband image is furthered on the promotional video for the albums opening track and single "Kimi Ni Mune Kyun" which shows the trio barely keeping up with the choreography as they dance across a floor tiled with the album's cover. The video is easily found on youtube and well worth a watch by anyone. The song itself is also the albums most airy and whimsical track, one that in the context of the album works as sort of a subtle bait and switch. The rest of the album, for being as bright and poppy and humorous as it is, is also surprising heavy. The band here has learned how to use huge gated drums and glistening spires of sound to tug right at the heartstrings in just a way that you might not even it realize at first. The final track, "Wild Ambitions," in particular, with it's deadly double dose of longing and confusion has driven me to tears on more than one occasion. Same goes for "Kai-Koh," a swirling mass of soaring synth lines that feels like a strange ecstasy that may accompany the confontaion of an ultimate sorrow. It's also one of the most amazing songs ever recorded.Elsewhere, the album feels angsty, even. The song "Focus," in one of the album's few passages in English, has Hosono singing "You'll be burning with a new love tonight, and I'll be burning old pictures in my mind."Another area where the album really shines is in the vocals. The thing about YMO is that not one of them has the greatest voice in a traditional pop music sense. Each of their voices has its own peculiarities, but here they're singing to their fullest potential anyway, straight from the heart. During the second verse of "Ongaku" we hear each of them taking a line of their own before joining together again in unison. The result is one of the more endearing moments in recorded music. Also worth mentioning is the invaluable contributions from Bill Nelson on guitar, who appears on most of the album's tracks. The guitar itself sounds more like a synth at times, but carries an incredibly angelic tone like nothing I've heard be for.I recommend this particular pressing of the album if only because it features some of the most beautifully designed center labels I've ever seen. Grosho I would love to have been there in the 81-85 or so period with the Bill Nelson, Robin Scott and various Japan member collabs...agreed this is an AMAZING album...poppy, melancholy, beautifully produced...reminds me a lot of Bill Nelsons solo material from this time period (also sorely under appreciated IMO) Related Music albums to Naughty Boys by Y.M.O. • Mark's Music Notes for December 2011…
MARK’S MUSIC NOTES FOR DECEMBER 2011… The Black Keys follow up their excellent 2010 album Brothers with the upbeat El Camino, another great album that commercial radio will probably ignore just like it did with Brothers. In a day and age where CD sales are on the decline, record labels continue to re-issue classic titles with proven track records in new incarnations that include unreleased material, re-mastered sound, and often lavish box sets. Though not yet included in Music Notes, Pink Floyd and Queen both had their entire catalogs re-vamped this year, and they sound great. Jethro Tull’s classic Aqualung album has been expanded, re-mixed and re-mastered with the level of care and quality that should be the standard for all re-issues. The Rolling Stones have already released expanded remasters and box sets on Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, and now their top selling album, Some Girls has received the same treatment. Be Bop Deluxe is a 1970’s band that most readers will be unfamiliar with. They never had any mainstream success in the U.S., but the band had several great albums, and their entire studio catalog has recently been remastered and compiled into a concise box set. The Black Keys – El Camino Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, have said that they have been listening to a lot of Rolling Stones lately, and they set out to record a more direct rock and roll album than their last album, Brothers was.

100 GREATEST GUITARISTS Hammett: oNe iN A MiLLioN “innovative”. KiRK HaMMEtt By Ol Drake For me, Kirk Hammett is one of the More stars on their top guitarists greatest metal guitarists ever – and also one at classicrock of the most underrated. The thing about magazine.co.uk his playing is that, while he can certainly shred, that’s not all he does. Kirk has his own voice and style – and to me, that’s ADMiRABLe NeLSoN instantly recognisable. BiLL NELsON The problem is that everyone knows By Brian Tatler Metallica’s songs so well that what he contributes is overlooked. More than that, Bill Nelson was one of my favourite people take him for granted. You walk guitarists in the 1970s. I used to into a guitar shop at any time, and the } listen to Be Bop Deluxe albums a lot, chances are you’ll hear someone “Davy O’List’s and Bill’s solos always seemed very playing one of his solos, from a song tasteful, not bluesy, just kind of like One. And there will always be guitar playing soaring. I really liked his playing and a bright spark going: “That’s just was incendiary, some of it rubbed off on my boring. Anyone can play that.” The technique, particularly songs such as point is that not everyone can play borderline Jet Silver (And The Dolls Of Venus), what Kirk did on something like One, psychotic. Maid In Heaven and Crying To The Sky and he also came up with it in the first – they all had these fabulous, place.

Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. Stockhausen (Elektronische Studie I, II-1951-1954), H.
