    The Crisis of Bengali Gentility in Calcutta Benoy Ghose The social scale and the paraphernalia of gentility are all rapidly and constantly changing, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for different income-groups of the Bengali middle-classes to keep pace with that change, particularly in urban centres like Calcutta. Bengali gentility is facing a really critical situation. And it has been made worse by the heavier influx of non-Bengalis in search of employment and almost impossible by the arrival of lakhs of Bengalis from East Pakistan who are largely concentrated in and around Calcutta. The concept of gentility moreover, is no less psychological than economic. And as the frontier of is changing and its scale is ascending, the struggle for climbing up to it and for preserving the status quo as well is becoming keener day by day. The crisis of Bengali gentility is therefore not only economic. It is a social and psychological crisis also, with all its ramifying consequences. The author is a well known writer in Bengali, and his recent study on the culture of West Bengal following his earlier survey of Bengal villages and towns, cultural and economic, is a pioneer work in the field bf Bengali letters.     Bengalis Thousand Years 8670/ 021116 The BengAlis: A ThousAnd YeArs Jawhar Sircar The last few days of a century that also happen to be at the end of a whole millennium, are bound to stir a strange excitement in even the most placid person. The two most expected feelings that hold their sway can perhaps be summarized as: introspection and expectation — drawing a balance sheet of the past as also trying to gauge what the future holds. Such an exercise can cover not only a single person or his immediate concerns; it may as well cover his locality, his state or nation and may be stretched to entire humanity. The constraints of my acquaintance and knowledge hardly qualify me to scan any group higher or bigger than my own people: the Bengalis. Even in this, my limitations now plague me more than my enthusiasm to try out such a review — but these notwithstanding; the sheer thrill of initiating an animated adda on the subject overpowers me. At the beginning, let me make it clear that I do not have the audacity to try to cover a thousand years in just a few pages: hence I will concentrate only on certain significant periods or issues, for the sake of presenting a viewpoint. So let us begin: are the Bengalis a thousand years old? Or even more? Historians tell us about our history during the Pala- Sena period, which would give us about 1250 years to be proud of, but if we include the great Sasanka, we could be share-holders in a great concern that goes back fourteen centuries.

The project can be described as a "PAST in the FUTURE" , a proper balance between nature and culture. The project is a raw interface between building and landscape where people and plan co-exist and can share the same surface at the same time creates a clear system of interaction between nature and the city. The project provides an opportunity to level the city at the same time be more closer to it. where the nature provides an unexpected contrast to the city keeping balance with the culture. ARTICLE Chutneyed Poetics: Reading Diaspora and Sundar Popo’s Chutney Lyrics as Indo-Caribbean Postcolonial Literature Rajiv Mohabir Auburn University, US [email protected] It is my intent for these new readings of Sundar Popo’s song lyrics to not only challenge modern epistemic violence perpetrated against the deemed frivolity of Chutney (as a genre’s) lyrics, but also to utilize the original texts to understand these songs as an essential postcolonial Indo-Caribbean literature. Since the archive of Caribbean literature includes predominantly English, Spanish, French, and various nation languages, I posit the inclusion of Caribbean Hindi as a neglected archive is worth exploring given its rich significations as literature. I engage chutney music, a form of popular music, as poetry to illustrate the construction of Indo-Caribbean identity through the linguistic and poetic features of its lyrics as a cultural production that are created by the syncretisms of the Caribbean. This paper is written in four sections: 1. A Chutneyed Diaspora, 2. Methods and Approach, 3. Chutney Translation and Analysis: Bends Towards Meaning and 4. Diaspora as Chutney. The first section provides a historical stage for the emergence of Chutney music, concentrating on an introduction to the trends of its study by contemporary ethnomusicologists. The second section introduces my own approach to the study of oral traditions as literature and my engagement with my subjective postcolonial positioning as an individual of Indo-Caribbean origin.

III (May. 2014), PP 24-30 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Inventing the New, Re-defining the Old: Bengali Identities in post-1947 Bangla Stories Debosmita Paul Ph.D. Research Scholar, Jamia Millia Islamia, India Abstract: A study of the history of the Bengal region proves the fact that it is a record of creation and re-creation of several identities. These identities had constantly divided and united the people residing within the region. Class, language and region have been the major factors which have conceptualized these identities. However, the Partition of 1947 had rendered its people with identities which were communal in nature and superseded all other identities which had existed in Bengal, so far. Post-1947, the two parts of Bengal, i.e. West Bengal in India and East Pakistan in the newly created Pakistan either re-defined their earlier identities or invented new identities. The present paper attempts to trace these identities through available historical accounts and also studies them through the Bengali short stories which deal with the Partition of 1947 and Partition of 1971. The ultimate objective is to conclude that the continually redefined identities and the new invented identities have resisted the formation of identities on the basis of religion. The paper has four sections. The Introduction proposes the aim of the paper and discusses the other works done in the area in brief. The second and the third sections, titled ‘Redefining the Old…’ and ‘Inventing the New…’, trace the various Bengali identities which have existed in the region through historical accounts and by analyzing the Bengali short stories based on the Bengal Partitions of 1947 and 1971.

    Sleaze, Slur… and the Search for a Sanitized Identity: Bhojpuri Media at a Crossroads Madhusri Shrivastava, [email protected] Volume 5.1 (2015) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2015.130 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This article offers perspectives on those who control the Bhojpuri media industry in Mumbai, India, and delimit what is to be shown. Bhojpuri is a dialect of Hindi spoken in parts of the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The influx of migrants from these regions to different parts of India has led to a resurgence of interest in the Bhojpuri media, and has drawn fly-by-night operators to the industry. To cater to the migrants’ needs, ribald action romances are produced; but this very bawdiness hamstrings attempts to widen the audience base. The article examines the issues that plague the industry, and explores the ways in which the industry is struggling to carve a sanitized, yet distinctive identity.
