Japanese myth, which cannot be limited to its religious, political, literary, or any other single intellectual or academic dimension, requires an interdisciplinary approach. Also, the significance of Japanese myth neither exists in the hypothetical mythic past nor is it restricted to the eighth century contexts of the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. Its meaning extends from the past to the present in patterns of both continuity and change. People continue to invent, maintain, or deny Japanese myth’s potential significances and perpetuate its authority as a form of discourse. Through analysis of recent scholarship on the myths of the goddess Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, as well as a detailed look at the eighth-century mythic texts, this thesis seeks to describe a microcosm of mythology in 21st century Japan that is unique and yet representative of modern myth scholarship. We find strong themes of resistance to Japan’s wartime nationalism, sometimes contrasted with efforts to use myth in constructing a new Japanese identity – one that is either unique or situated it in its global context. These myths are especially associated with Japanese traditions and contain thematic elements that allow for speculation about notions of spirituality, sexuality, and gender. Now, as in most of history, the myths are an authoritative base from which scholars attempt to make statements about Japan historically and in the present. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my gratitude towards my Japanese acquaintances and friends who, through professional knowledge or personal interest, contributed to my early research. Already in this decade Japan has experienced three significant anniversaries pertaining to its mythic tradition. First in 2012, Japan’s oldest mythic text, the Kojiki, celebrated the 1300th anniversary of its compilation, an event marked by renewed interest in its narrative contents and commentaries. The following year, the completion of the 62nd Shikinen Sengū,1 the regular 20-year renovation of Ise Shrine, drew resources of lumber, stone and labor from all over the country and attracted

    Universal Mythology: Stories That Circle The World Lydia L. This installation is about mythology and the commonalities that occur between cultures across the world. According to folklorist Alan Dundes, myths are sacred narratives that explain the evolution of the world and humanity. He defines the sacred narratives as “a story that serves to define the fundamental worldview of a culture by explaining aspects of the natural world, and delineating the psychological and social practices and ideals of a society.” Stories explain how and why the world works and I want to understand the connections in these distant mythologies by exploring their existence and theories that surround them. This painting illustrates the connection between separate cultures through their polytheistic mythologies. It features twelve deities, each from a different mythology/religion. By including these gods, I have allowed for a diversified group of cultures while highlighting characters whose traits consistently appear in many mythologies. It has the Celtic supreme god, Dagda; the Norse trickster god, Loki; the Japanese moon god, Tsukuyomi; the Aztec sun god, Huitzilopochtli; the Incan nature goddess, Pachamama; the Egyptian water goddess, Tefnut; the Polynesian fire goddess, Mahuika; the Inuit hunting goddess, Arnakuagsak; the Greek fate goddesses, the Moirai: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos; the Yoruba love goddess, Oshun; the Chinese war god, Chiyou; and the Hindu death god, Yama. The painting was made with acrylic paint on mirror. Connection is an important element in my art, and I incorporate this by using the mirror to bring the audience into the piece, allowing them to see their reflection within the parting of the clouds, whilst viewing the piece.

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media.

    Chapter 3 Quiz What lead to Joseph Campbell's interest in comparative mythology? When Campbell was a child, he became fascinated with Native American Culture. This led him to a lifelong passion for myth and storytelling. When Campbell was studying maths and biology, he recognized that he is inclined towards humanities. Soon he became an English literature student at Columbia University. Campbell was interested in knowledge above all else. In 1924 Campbell traveled to Europe with his family. On the ship during his return trip, he encountered the Messiah elect of the Theosophical Society, Jiddu Krishnamurti. They discussed Indian philosophy which leads to Campbell’s interest in Hindu and Indian philosophy. Campbell studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany. He learned to read and speak French and German. When Campbell did not have any work after his graduation (in depression era), he used to read nine hours a day for five years. He soon discovered the works of Carl Jung who is the founder of analytical psychology. Campbell could recognize recurring patterns of all the stories he had read, from Carl Jung’s work. This must have encouraged Joseph Campbell in comparative mythology. How did Joseph Campbell become the world's foremost scholar on mythology? How did the Great Depression benefit his education? Joseph Campbell received BA in English literature and MA in Medieval literature from Columbia University. Campbell also received a fellowship from Columbia University to study in Europe. He studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany.

Bodiford, Chair This dissertation considers two intersecting aspects of premodern Japanese religions: the development of mountain-based religious systems and the formation of numinous sites. The first aspect focuses in particular on the historical emergence of a mountain religious school in Japan known as Shugendō. While previous scholarship often categorizes Shugendō as a form of folk religion, this designation tends to situate the school in overly broad terms that neglect its historical and regional stages of formation. In contrast, this project examines Shugendō through the investigation of a single site. Through a close reading of textual, epigraphical, and visual sources from Mt. Togakushi (in present-day Nagano Ken), I trace the development of Shugendō and other religious trends from roughly the thirteenth through mid-nineteenth centuries. This study further differs from previous research insofar as it analyzes Shugendō as a concrete system of practices, doctrines, members, institutions, and identities.

    The road from Ainu barbarian to Japanese primitive: A brief summary of Japanese-ainu relations in a historical perspective Noémi GODEFROY Centre d’Etudes Japonaises (CEJ) “Populations Japonaises” Research Group Proceedings from the 3rd Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS) “Making a difference: representing/constructing the other in Asian/African Media, Cinema and languages”, 16-18 February 2012, published by OFIAS at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, p.201-212 Edward Saïd, in his ground-breaking work Orientalism, underlines that to represent the “Other” is to manipulate him. This has been an instrument of submission towards Asia during the age of European expansion, but the use of such a process is not confined to European domination. For centuries, the relationship between Japan and its northern neighbors, the Ainu, is based on economical domination and dependency. In this regard, the Ainu’s foreignness, impurity and “barbaric appearance” - their qualities as inferior “Others” - are emphasized in descriptive texts or by the regular staging of such diplomatic practices as “barbarian audiences”, thus highlighting the Japanese cultural and territorial superiority. But from 1868, the construction of the Meiji nation-state requires the assimilation and acculturation of the Ainu people. As Japan undergoes what Fukuzawa Yukichi refers to as the “opening to civilization” (文明開化 bunmei kaika) by learning from the West, it also plays the role of the civilizer towards the Ainu. The historical case study of the relationship between Japanese and Ainu from up to Meiji highlights the evolution of Japan’s own self-image and identity, from an emerging state, subduing barbarians, to newly unified state - whose ultramarine relations are inspired by a Chinese-inspired ethnocentrism and rejection of outside influence- during the Edo period, and finally to an aspiring nation-state, seeking to assert itself while avoiding colonization at Meiji.

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively).
