On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Xiaohan Du All Rights Reserved Abstract On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du This dissertation is the first monographic study of the monk-calligrapher Yishan Yining (1247- 1317), who was sent to Japan in 1299 as an imperial envoy by Emperor Chengzong (Temur, 1265-1307. r. 1294-1307), and achieved unprecedented success there. Through careful visual analysis of his extant oeuvre, this study situates Yishan’s calligraphy synchronically in the context of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy at the turn of the 14th century and diachronically in the history of the relationship between calligraphy and Buddhism. This study also examines Yishan’s prolific inscriptional practice, in particular the relationship between text and image, and its connection to the rise of ink monochrome landscape painting genre in 14th century Japan. This study fills a gap in the history of Chinese calligraphy, from which monk- calligraphers and their practices have received little attention. It also contributes to existing Japanese scholarship on bokuseki by relating Zen calligraphy to religious and political currents in Kamakura Japan. Furthermore, this study questions the validity of the “China influences Japan” model in the history of calligraphy and proposes a more fluid and nuanced model of synthesis between the wa and the kan (Japanese and Chinese) in examining cultural practices in East Asian culture. -

University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Art and Art History Fall 2014, Study Abroad in Kobe, Japan ART 380: Early Art of Japan – Buddhist Art and Visual Culture Instructor: Prof. John Szostak Credit hours: 3 Contact hours: 45 Course Description: This course explores the art of Japan’s early periods (prehistory through the 16th century) with special emphasis on Japanese Buddhist art and visual culture. The course structure combines reading- and lecture-based learning with a significant outside-the-classroom component in the form of multiple field trips. The class is tailored to take advantage of the many temples in the greater Kansai region that were central to the development of Japanese Buddhism and its art, as well as the presence of several museums that will allow students to experience first-hand the art objects under study. Student who successfully apply themselves in the course will emerge at its conclusion with a knowledge of the values and beliefs associated with the various schools of Japanese Buddhism, and how these are represented through such media as painting, sculpture, ritual implements, architecture, and garden design. The course begins with the Kofun period (ca. 250-552), especially its burial practices and funerary culture centered around the decorated mound tombs for which the period is named, including Goshiki Kofun, located in Kobe. The second section of the course covers the establishment of Buddhism in Japan during the Asuka period (552-710) and its expansion in the Nara period (710-784), and will be supplemented by a field trip to the Nara National Museum and several important surviving Nara-period temples (projected: Todaij, Yakushiji, Kofukuji, and Horyuji). -

The article explores the principle of polarity as a law of the Universe and the creation and the principle of F. Saussure's dichotomy in linguistics on the example of the “Buddha's heart” ideographic sign of Chinese and Japanese. The hieroglyph manji 卍 is presented in examples from ancient languages to modern times, its interpretation and practical use in different cultures and eras. 1. Introduction The art of calligraphy in Japan is called shodo: 書道 “the way of brush, letter”. In Zen Buddhism, calligraphy is called bokuseki 墨跡 “carcass footprint,” which reflects the qualities of deep meditation [1]. In terms of speed of writing in China, there are three styles – slow, medium-speed and fast writing; in Japan – statutory, half-painted and cursive style [2]. Epochs, addictions to handwriting, fonts, plastic elements of hieroglyphic writing change, but the minimal element of a hieroglyph – the stroke is the most important carrier of the deep fullness of energy and informational component, formalizing descending and ascending energy flows, as a starting point and direction vector along the stroke of the calligraphic brush. As an example for scientific analysis, I would like to cite the well-known hieroglyph “Buddha's heart” (see Figure 1). -

The arts teach young people how to learn by inspiring in them the desire to learn. The arts use a symbolic language to convey the cultural values and ideologies of the time and place of their making. By including Asian arts in their curriculums, teachers can embark on culturally diverse studies and students will gain a broader and deeper understanding of the world in which they live. Often, this means that students will be encouraged to study the arts of their own cultural heritage and thereby gain self-esteem. Given that the study of Asia is required in many state curriculums, it is clear that our schools and teachers need support and resources to meet the demands and expectations that they already face. -

Buddhist Manuscript Cultures Buddhist Manuscript Cultures explores how religious and cultural practices in pre- modern Asia were shaped by literary and artistic traditions as well as by Buddhist material culture. This study of Buddhist texts focuses on the significance of their material forms rather than their doctrinal contents and examines how and why they were made. Collectively, the book offers cross-cultural and comparative insights into the transmission of Buddhist knowledge and the use of texts and images as ritual objects in the artistic and aesthetic traditions of Buddhist cultures. Drawing on case studies from India, Gandhara, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mongolia, China, and Nepal, the chapters included investigate the range of interests and values associated with producing and using written texts and the roles manuscripts and images play in the transmission of Buddhist texts and in fostering devotion among Buddhist communities. Contributions are by reputed scholars in Buddhist Studies and represent diverse disciplinary approaches from religious studies, art history, anthropology, and history. This book will be of interest to scholars and students working in these fields. Stephen C. Berkwitz is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Missouri State University. His research focuses on Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka. At present, he is preparing South Asian Buddhism: A Survey, also for publication with Routledge. Juliane Schober is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, Arizona State University. Her research focuses on Theravada Buddhism in Burma, particularly on ritual, sacred geography, and the veneration of icons in the modern state cult. The literature in Heian period written by the women revealed their secluded lives while throwing light at the manipulated society which was in favor of men. The primary objective of this paper is to examine the sidelined woman of the society and the author’s psychological perspective through textual analysis of the Poetic literature work- Kagerō Nikki. It throws light at social practices which were often followed in the middle-class society with the help of arguments which are further proved. The introduction focuses on the background of the period and the initiative of diary usage from Asuka Period onwards. It also focuses on the usage of Kana and introduction to diaries written by women while emphasizing on the significance of women diary literature. Secondly, the literary work is studied from the socio-economic and political viewpoint to examine the hypothetical position of the author- Michitsuna no Haha. Apart from her diary, very little information is available in other work regarding her existence. This work gives a detailed description of Michitsuna no Haha’s married life and her position as a secondary wife in the society. -

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, 2012 The Asuka Period of Japan is characterized by the introduction of Buddhism from Korea and a consolidation of power by the central government. The interplay between the Imperial Clan and the Soga Clan was integral in shaping everyday life in Asuka as the introduction of Buddhism brought the creation of permanent architecture in the shape of temples. These temples, primarily constructed by the Imperial Line and the Soga Clan, required the employment of local populations as a labor force for the construction of the various buildings within each temple complex. An examination of the assemblage of round eave-end roof tiles at the first Buddhist temple in Japan, Asukadera, examines the implications of this labor procurement. Furthermore, spatial analysis between Asukadera, Tōyuradera, and Okuyamakumedera provides data for future research. iii Acknowledgements Much of this study could not have been completed without the help of the following individuals and institution. Ruymar (Michael Sōru Ruymar) 1 What follows is a translation of Kusumoto Bunyū’s (久須本⽂雄) 1982 book Zengo Nyūmon (禅 語⼊⾨, An Introduction to Zen Words and Phrases, Tokyo: Daihōrin-kaku Co. Ltd.), absent its glossary of monastic terms. The main text consists of 100 words and phrases selected by Dr. Kusumoto for exegesis from a variety of sources, but particularly from classic kōan (Zen case) collections like the Blue Cliff Record, the Gateless Barrier, and the Book of Serenity, as well as from the collected writings or sayings of renowned Zen Masters from both China and Japan, like Zen Masters Linji and Dōgen, or, again, from the poetry of such as Han Shan (Cold Mountain) and others. As a genre, there are numerous books of this kind available in Japan, and I have become familiar with two excellent Zengo texts now available to English readers: (i) Moon by The Window: The calligraphy and Zen insights of Shodo Harada (Wisdom Publications, 2011), !and (ii) Zen Words Zen Calligraphy (Tankosha, 1991). It is evident from the breadth and depth of his commentaries that Dr. Kusumoto brought a lifetime of study to bear on the matter contained herein. Though sketchy, he was born in 1908 and graduated in 1933 from what is now Hanazono University, one of several prestigious institutions at which he was destined to lecture in his areas of specialization: Chinese philosophy and Zen studies. -

CORK SLIGO DUBLIN GALWAY LIMERICK DUNDALK MAYNOOTH WATERFORD WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2017 The Embassy of Japan is delighted that our collaboration with Access>Cinema has now reached its ninth year, thanks to the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation. Even though over 500 films are made in Japan each year, many of them are never released overseas. Thanks to the tireless work of the team at Access>Cinema we have another incredible line up of films. In 2017 we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Ireland. The celebrations kicked off in January with the visit of Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida to Ireland, which Irish Foreign Minister Charles Flanagan reciprocated in February. The Japanese Film Festival is one of the highlights of the ongoing celebrations. This year’s films will open a door on Japanese life. Her Love Boils Bathwater won a Best Actress Award, at the 40th Japan Academy Awards, in addition to Best Supporting Actress and Best Rookie. The festival’s prestigious line up continues with Japan’s entry to the 2017 Oscars, Nagasaki: Memories of My Son starring Kazunari Ninomiya, star of Japanese boy band Arashi. One of the most unique titles is Happy Hour, a 5 hour highlight which won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Festival. Of course there is the usual selection of anime titles, including a special preview of Sword Art Online The Movie. We are delighted to have a total of 21 different titles at this year’s Festival showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo, Maynooth and Dublin.
