University of Cincinnati, 1999 Committee Chair: James Culley 3 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with the musical analysis of Toshi Ichiyanagi’s 1972 solo piano composition Piano Media, and an examination of musical processes and considerations that mirror and parallel patterns of traditional Japanese culture. Through brief studies of language construction, Zen, Pachinko and traditional aesthetics, analogies and references can be used to highlight congruent musical structures and predilections in Ichiyanagi’s work. The Superlative Artistry of Japan gikou_fix.indd 1 2018/02/28 21:41 Foreword The Japan Foundation is a specialized public agency, which was established in 1972 with the goal of promoting international understanding through cultural exchange. The foundation organizes a variety of projects in three primary areas of activity: arts and cultural exchange, Japanese-language education abroad, and Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. In the field of visual arts, part of our arts and cultural exchange program, we strive to introduce Japanese art through reciprocal exchanges between Japan and other countries. As part of these activities, we have regularly organized traveling exhibitions, which tour the world. These events are made up of works from the foundation’s own collection and deal with a diverse range of subjects including crafts, painting, photography, architecture, and design. Some 20 exhibitions are constantly underway and are held at some 100 cities every year. On this occasion we are pleased to present “The Superlative Artistry of Japan”, a traveling exhibition that presents a cohesive collection of works and materials from various different genres that each place great emphasis on highly skilled techniques, ingenious expressions and concepts, and a high level of perfection that take viewers by surprise. Introducing elaborate Meiji era (1868 – 1912) kogei works that played a significant role in initiating the Japonism trend in 19th century Europe as a starting point, the exhibition in addition to numerous contemporary works of superlative artistry, also comprises capsule toy figures and food samples that illustrate a strong commitment to craftsmanship. Through this exhibition we intend to introduce the outstanding techniques of each work as well as the worlds of expression that even serve to surpass such skill and finesse, in hopes that viewers will be able to appreciate this specific part of Japan’s creative culture that honors craftsmanship and has constantly shown a thorough sense of meticulousness and devotion towards production processes. -

On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Xiaohan Du All Rights Reserved Abstract On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du This dissertation is the first monographic study of the monk-calligrapher Yishan Yining (1247- 1317), who was sent to Japan in 1299 as an imperial envoy by Emperor Chengzong (Temur, 1265-1307. r. 1294-1307), and achieved unprecedented success there. Through careful visual analysis of his extant oeuvre, this study situates Yishan’s calligraphy synchronically in the context of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy at the turn of the 14th century and diachronically in the history of the relationship between calligraphy and Buddhism. This study also examines Yishan’s prolific inscriptional practice, in particular the relationship between text and image, and its connection to the rise of ink monochrome landscape painting genre in 14th century Japan. This study fills a gap in the history of Chinese calligraphy, from which monk- calligraphers and their practices have received little attention. It also contributes to existing Japanese scholarship on bokuseki by relating Zen calligraphy to religious and political currents in Kamakura Japan. Furthermore, this study questions the validity of the “China influences Japan” model in the history of calligraphy and proposes a more fluid and nuanced model of synthesis between the wa and the kan (Japanese and Chinese) in examining cultural practices in East Asian culture. -

The article explores the principle of polarity as a law of the Universe and the creation and the principle of F. Saussure's dichotomy in linguistics on the example of the “Buddha's heart” ideographic sign of Chinese and Japanese. The hieroglyph manji 卍 is presented in examples from ancient languages to modern times, its interpretation and practical use in different cultures and eras. 1. Introduction The art of calligraphy in Japan is called shodo: 書道 “the way of brush, letter”. In Zen Buddhism, calligraphy is called bokuseki 墨跡 “carcass footprint,” which reflects the qualities of deep meditation [1]. In terms of speed of writing in China, there are three styles – slow, medium-speed and fast writing; in Japan – statutory, half-painted and cursive style [2]. Epochs, addictions to handwriting, fonts, plastic elements of hieroglyphic writing change, but the minimal element of a hieroglyph – the stroke is the most important carrier of the deep fullness of energy and informational component, formalizing descending and ascending energy flows, as a starting point and direction vector along the stroke of the calligraphic brush. As an example for scientific analysis, I would like to cite the well-known hieroglyph “Buddha's heart” (see Figure 1). -

The University of Iceland School of Humanities Japanese Language and Culture The Abode of Fancy, of Vacancy, and of the Unsymmetrical How Shinto, Daoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism Interplay in the Ritual Space of Japanese Tea Ceremony BA Essay in Japanese Language and Culture Francesca Di Berardino Id no.: 220584-3059 Supervisor: Gunnella Þorgeirsdóttir September 2018 Abstract Japanese tea ceremony extends beyond the mere act of tea drinking: it is also known as chadō, or “the Way of Tea”, as it is one of the artistic disciplines conceived as paths of religious awakening through lifelong effort. One of the elements that shaped its multifaceted identity through history is the evolution of the physical space where the ritual takes place. This essay approaches Japanese tea ceremony from a point of view that is architectural and anthropological rather than merely aesthetic, in order to trace the influence of Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism on both the architectural elements of the tea room and the different aspects of the ritual. The structure of the essay follows the structure of the space where the ritual itself is performed: the first chapter describes the tea garden where guests stop before entering the ritual space of the tea room; it also provides an overview of the history of tea in Japan. The second chapter figuratively enters the ritual space of the tea room, discussing how Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism merged into the architecture of the ritual space. Finally, the third chapter looks at the preparation room, presenting the interplay of the four cognitive systems within the ritual of making and serving tea. -

Buddhist Manuscript Cultures
Buddhist Manuscript Cultures Buddhist Manuscript Cultures explores how religious and cultural practices in pre- modern Asia were shaped by literary and artistic traditions as well as by Buddhist material culture. This study of Buddhist texts focuses on the significance of their material forms rather than their doctrinal contents and examines how and why they were made. Collectively, the book offers cross-cultural and comparative insights into the transmission of Buddhist knowledge and the use of texts and images as ritual objects in the artistic and aesthetic traditions of Buddhist cultures. Drawing on case studies from India, Gandhara, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mongolia, China, and Nepal, the chapters included investigate the range of interests and values associated with producing and using written texts and the roles manuscripts and images play in the transmission of Buddhist texts and in fostering devotion among Buddhist communities. Contributions are by reputed scholars in Buddhist Studies and represent diverse disciplinary approaches from religious studies, art history, anthropology, and history. This book will be of interest to scholars and students working in these fields. Stephen C. Berkwitz is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Missouri State University. His research focuses on Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka. At present, he is preparing South Asian Buddhism: A Survey, also for publication with Routledge. Juliane Schober is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, Arizona State University. The Museum has chosen a Japanese building for its third House in the Garden because of the unique relevance to modern Western architecture of traditional Japanese design. The characteristics which give Japanese architecture this interest are post and lintel skeleton frame construction; flexibility of plan; close relation of indoor and outdoor areas; and the ornamental quality of the structural system. Modern Western practice, with its general use of the steel skeleton frame, has developed many effects known to Japanese architecture since the eighth century. For example, walls which do not support a roof, but are instead hung like curtains on the structural framework, are today a com monplace of Western architecture. Before 1900 Frank Lloyd Wright made fundamental to his work the Japanese respect for the beauty of natural materials, as well as the massive, hovering, insistently horizontal roofs essential to the Japanese conception of a house. -

Ruymar (Michael Sōru Ruymar) 1 What follows is a translation of Kusumoto Bunyū’s (久須本⽂雄) 1982 book Zengo Nyūmon (禅 語⼊⾨, An Introduction to Zen Words and Phrases, Tokyo: Daihōrin-kaku Co. Ltd.), absent its glossary of monastic terms. The main text consists of 100 words and phrases selected by Dr. Kusumoto for exegesis from a variety of sources, but particularly from classic kōan (Zen case) collections like the Blue Cliff Record, the Gateless Barrier, and the Book of Serenity, as well as from the collected writings or sayings of renowned Zen Masters from both China and Japan, like Zen Masters Linji and Dōgen, or, again, from the poetry of such as Han Shan (Cold Mountain) and others. As a genre, there are numerous books of this kind available in Japan, and I have become familiar with two excellent Zengo texts now available to English readers: (i) Moon by The Window: The calligraphy and Zen insights of Shodo Harada (Wisdom Publications, 2011), !and (ii) Zen Words Zen Calligraphy (Tankosha, 1991). It is evident from the breadth and depth of his commentaries that Dr. Kusumoto brought a lifetime of study to bear on the matter contained herein. Though sketchy, he was born in 1908 and graduated in 1933 from what is now Hanazono University, one of several prestigious institutions at which he was destined to lecture in his areas of specialization: Chinese philosophy and Zen studies. -

The exploration of the metaphysical realities and principles of Japanese tea rituals can also be discovered in creating sacred space within the mundane to achieve harmony amidst the dissonance of the secular world. Religion, like tea, is universal, as it is intimately associated with groups of people and cultures throughout the world. Today, religion is at the forefront of divides and there is the need for tolerance and understanding. While people have used religion to divide, tea brings people together. The Japanese way of tea, imbued with deeper spiritual meaning, can help bridge this divide as those sharing in tea will meditate upon the universal values that the tea ceremony promotes.
